The fin is providing lift at the back, hence faster to plane and almost half the plane angle. It would seem logical to design it to mount under the existing fin for strength and less flex. With a lower plane angle I would like to know how it handles into waves.
@Bally463 жыл бұрын
By my counting the lowest trim without a fin was by far the fastest to plane. 0-20mph in under 5secs is really going
@pdp832 жыл бұрын
This is a great video! I would have maybe suggested adding the time to get on plane though as that is in my opinion more important than top speed most of the time. Also, it would have been interesting to see what the third position on the motor would have done since you increase the bow rise when running without the hydrofoil and I would assume as long as the bow rise was okay with the fin it would have gone about the same as the finless motor.
@AdventuresUnlimited-xc3gp13 күн бұрын
Another important element of this type of hydrofoil, is in steep turns at speed. They can tend to lift the stern in such a way as can be unstable. Sometimes wanting to “stern porpoise”. All in all a great product, but be aware of its potentially dangerous characteristics. Have fun!

hello, I have a 6hp outboard motor and a dinghy with an inflatable bottom of 2.5 meters. When I try to glide with it, I get into that state, but very quickly it's as if the propeller is running empty, that sound is heard and nothing from gliding. Does anyone know what I need to do and change to be able to maintain my glide. is such a HYDROFOIL solution for me? I apologize for the bad language

The reduction in bow rise is nice but I hate to lose 2 mph on the top end. Gteat easy to understand video and The graphics were top notch.
@kevinsgarage2 ай бұрын
thank you! losing a little top speed was worth it for the more comfortable ride for me, I usually dont go full speed too, just keep it right on plane for the best efficiency and range. Everyone's needs are different though! I have been tempted to try a thick stainless steel plate without any foil shape to it to see how it works.
@locker13252 ай бұрын
@@kevinsgarage I suppose the foil acts like a wing, just underwater. Probably lifts the transom up while at the same time adding drag which knocks down your top speed. The plate would be a good experiment. I don't know how it could affect planing though.
@kevinsgarage2 ай бұрын
@@locker1325 I think it would give a bit of a 'high alpha' effect when the bow rises to help get the bow down, and then create less drag once on plane. Its only theory though until I try it!

This is the best, most thorough test of Fin vs No fin that I found on KZbin. So as a result do you prefer to run without the fin installed or with it - so sacrificing a little too speed but a better plane?

And - make turns to assess ventilation/squirrelliness (for a given speed, say 20mph). And - time from 2 to 20 mph (holeshot). Only suggestions; this is a great posting - thanks! I just bought a used 16' V Alumicraft w/ a 25hp Johnson. It did ok but it Dolphined on me, the front shot straight up trying a hole shot. Now that I have the Whale tail on? Omg! 33mph, the front lays flat, no Dolphin & just a way better control & boating experience. They are great for small boats & motors. My mpg increased also.

@kevinsgarage2 жыл бұрын
Thats a lot of boat for a small motor. Hydrofoils help boats that can already plane do it better. I would suggest an 8 or 9.9hp to be able to get on plane.
@dustinj7650 Жыл бұрын
weight is a big factor. I have 6hp also, and 3m inflatable also. I can get 400lbs to plane (motor+boat+gas+me+gear), but not 600lbs. The 9.9hp (66% more power) should definitely get 600lbs on plane. Also can experiment with prop pitch and hydrofoil.

Hydrofoils are a crutch for a bad set up. If you find you need one, it's because your rig is either a} under powered b} poorly propped or c} the engine isn't at the proper height. There are a ton of under-powered rigs out there using these, but that is why. It's why no one ever complains if their rig has the maximum horsepowered motor attached.
@kevinsgarage2 жыл бұрын
The interesting thing about the boat this test took place on, is that it was rated for 8 hp, and I used a 15. Motor was at the correct height- cavitation plate level with the keel. I still had problems with excessive bow rise without the fin, even when I had an 8hp on it. The problem may come from it just being a short boat at 8.5ft. either way, the fin helped this boat out a lot.
