After years of work, the first public demo is finally out! Yay! A couple of things I want to note about the project: - I've implemented a new ranking system that I feel encourages players to engage with the game's mechanics in the most satisfying way possible, although it might be too difficult to get a gold rank with a level one Sonic (I guarantee it's possible though!) - Although I tried my best to playtest and create a stable experience, the game is still probably filled with glitches. using the opengl driver instead of vulkan doesn't let the game work at all. it just shows the background of the title screen with no music

hey just some feedback i think the speed break animation could use some work honestly sonic looks kinda stiff when using speed break I think you should make him lean forward more or maybe make him bob a bit like in the original also I think for his normal running animation his arms should be a little more spread out

I always assumed that people would ditch the on rail like controls for a more adventure like feel, however I love that you have decided to faithfully remake almost every single detail about this game and have also decided to give this gameplay style another chance and I must say I am really happy that you have, as the level design was created around that gameplay style. I gave this a try and was VERY happy with it! Secret Rings was one of my first wii games and to see it recreated like this is amazing! i will say, the controls in the main stage were a liiittle touchy but i got used to it enough. im SUPER excited for this project!

So, about my experience with this remake. It's really promising, a good foundation for refining this game for PC. Though there are obviously issues, here are mine: 1. Shader precompilation doesn't seem to be working; first-play stuttering was present. 2. Maybe it's a controller problem and the keyboard is fine, but Sonic feels too sharp to control. A slight strafe and Sonic bumps into walls. A 10% deadzone helped a little bit, but it's just a workaround. This problem was in the original when you used too strong sensitivity settings. 3. Level design doesn't work well with camera-based movement. Sonic was originally on path-rails, so when the path starts to wiggle in this remake, you're expected to somehow adapt your direction and both not lose speed but also strafe properly. My suggestion, if possible, is to try to implement path-traced movement or some automation for tricky spots like that. Strong points: 1. Compared to the original, it feels really good that Sonic finally feels responsive. No more input lag. 2. As I said, a bit too sharp, but Sonic isn't a slug that needs hours to walk backwards. He can even perform a Homing Attack with a backflip, which feels cool. 3. "NO SUCH THING AS FATE FOR THOSE WHO SPEED" doesn't play e v e r y w h e r e. 4. Making gimmicks like the sidewalk faster is appreciated.

If you strip the weird motion controls you get a solid boost style Sonic game, not much different from the Wii version of Sonic Unleashed.

As someone who did actually enjoy Secret Rings, this project is quite promising after playing the demo. The only issues I have with the demo is that the text language option doesn't have the names for the languages other than English and Japanese, and that the steering is a bit on the over sensitive side, at least on an Xbox Series controller. Turning down the dead zone has semi-helped make steering less slippery for me but I do hope there's some additional options to adjust the analog sensitivity in the future, because I can imagine this potentially effecting the upgrades for Sonic's handling should those get implemented in the future. Other than that, great start so far.

Just got done playing this. I had a very good time, miles better control than the original so far. The boss was probably a low point for me. I think having to maintain your speed was wonky. And the turning in general is a little slippery. But otherwise so many good things. The change of music in the menu, the texture on Sonic's fur, the ability to jump without sliding, but you still kept the slide in as a mechanic and Im excited to see what you do with it. Honestly the slide was a vibe and Im glad it's still there in some capacity. Great work. Make a Twitter account if you dont already have one so I can follow you right now

I tried out the demo, and when I went to options, it froze my computer. I have an RTX 4080, and I'm pretty sure it's not my specs. Possibly a compatibility issue. Still, glad to see someone is making this!

This was my CHILDHOOD I LOVE IT. My only criticism with this is Sonic's running animation. Not that the animation itself looks bad but it just doesn't look like he's running fast when compared to the OG one. This is especially apparent when doing speed break. Other than that though this is perfect, I'm absolutely surprised at how well you managed to recreate the UI. I wish you luck on the rest of this, I'm sure you will do great!

'If there's one thing that bothers me the most, is that speed break doesn't have the broken frame rate "ghosting" that was a popular effect in the mid 2000s and was in the original. Because of that, the ability feels less chaotic in a not-so-fun way. It just looks like a normal boost Another thing that bothered me while playing was how the lane placement was in relation to the camera. Maybe if you added subtle wind effects to the borders of the lanes to know where everything ends, as well as a line shining through sonic's body to know how far to the left or right he actually is, maybe as an assist option. The first offender is in the beginning of the level where sonic snakes through the soul orbs. as I wasn't collecting them sometimes.

The visual effects for speed break is a very early work in progress as I couldn't figure out how to implement it properly. Hopefully this will be improved in a future update. I will look into the pathing issues ^^

I played the available stages on my Steam Deck (because my pc's graphics are very poor). I didn’t play the original game... even though I had a Wii back in the day I didn't really know about Sonic... but this is cool! The game seems to run and control rather nicely overall so far. I enjoyed this glimpse of experiencing a remade Secret Rings. I hope to get to play more stages in the future and I hope you're able to continue your fabulous work with this!

Tested it out on my Steam Deck and it runs great. Few stutters on first run through the stage, though I wouldn't fault the game for that since its running through Proton. Controls take quite a bit of getting used to. It feels like the movement is digital and not analog, as in you're either pushing the stick fully in one direction or not pressing it at all with no in-between. Its impossible to make small adjustments by slightly tilting the stick as the game treats slight tilts as full tilts. I assume the deadzone setting is meant to fix this by acting as a threshold, but it doesn't really solve the core issue. Aside from that, I'm really impressed with how this project is shaping up so far, and I look forward to seeing more of the game in the future.

@@KumaPauZ Much better now! I can't wait to see more of this project. Secret Rings is a game that I have a ton of nostalgia for, but I can't really enjoy playing it due to the controls. I'm really impressed with how accurate the lighting and shaders are to the original game. A lot of projects tend to gloss over stuff like vertex colors that are crucial to accurately representing the models as they appeared in the original game. I am curious if you plan to translate the minigames to standard controllers since some made extensive use of the Wii remotes different motion capabilities. The minigames were a big part of my childhood, and while it'd be a shame if they can't be brought over, I'd certainly understand if they had to be left out.
