No you don't. Well at least not in that sense. The only requirement is to defeat all the subspace doppelgangers, as well as the bosses. Reacquiring all the fighters from their trophies is completely optional.

It's beautiful how Nintendo made the base game of Brawl the most fun one but mechanically not as fun, then how the fans take on the source material to make it the great mod that Project M is. The Smash community overall is incredible. From a gameplay & replay value point of view Project M is indeed the most fun Smash game imo.

You know what I want to see one day? An entire platformer beat-em-up with Smash Bros. gameplay. The game's progression doesn’t have to work like the SSE cutscenes and map - in fact, I would rather it not; it should be more like Kirby's Adventure and Return to Dreamland, where the level select is itself a giant hub level with extra things to do, and the cutscenes are relegated to before and after boss fights. Alternatively, the entire game taking place in constant succession with the level select as a separate option from continuing the story. I just want to take the jabs, tilts, dashes, grabs, aerials, smashes, and specials of Smash and apply them to a game of an entirely different 2D genre. Subspace Emissary sort of tried to make Smash a platformer beat-em-up, but it was only one part of the platform fighter that was the rest of the game.
