Running POE is much more cost effective than longish LMR400 runs and there's essentially zero loss. Also, the steel base of the antenna is slightly below the tubular antenna mast and this will negatively affect the signal too. It's best to ensure the entire antenna filament has a 360 degree unobstructed view. Also the comments about connecting the antenna while the unit is powered on is also true. The miner is trying to push a signal to an antenna that isn't there and all of a sudden is and that can cause a surge.

Power over Ethernet. Used commonly with security cameras. So I think you would be using an ethernet cable from your router to the miner which would then be mounted closer to the antenna. You would have the stock short cable going to the antenna from there.

PoE? Am I misunderstanding your correction. The purpose of the LMR is to carry signal to antenna without housing an exterior enclosure to protect the miner with PoE at antenna location. Its. Practical IMO to do all the other stuff when a cable run is needed either way and the cost will be similar or more with enclosures...exposing to heat when you can put the miner in a climate control house or area

@@Dufjans If the miner is plugged into the electricity and you connect or disconnect the antenna. It can damage the miner itself. It's actually in the Bobcat's manual. Just simply unplug the power when connecting or working on your antenna.

It would be helpful to you to know about losses in db at microwave frequencies. The longer the length the more loss, the more connectors and lightning arrestors the more db loss. This setup would probably not be far off the standard 6" antenna db!

when you ran the wires from the antenna down to the ground , it could have been a lot neater as you could have ran them on the inside of the facia.....and pull the wires tight to take out the slack. fyi.....grounding to copper pipe was good years ago....but not now.

Those zipties are going to deteriorate over time. Also, cut your grounds so there's no excess. You want to have the shortest path to ground.

I live near usc and theres a lot of 1-2 story as well. It is flat area too. I see that hot spotty map on los angeles has poor reward scale. I wanted to figure out if there’s possible ways to have greater witness in that area…. Reward scale is all red around los angeles

Reading the comments a little, I think I know the answer but I'll ask anyway. My miner showed up last week and I have a 5.8dbi antennae upgrade that came with it. There's not a great place for me to mount this on a pole or anything I was wondering if it would be detrimental to mount this to the outside wall of my house. I'm assuming that having 180 degrees blocked is going to be bad but will it be better than just using the indoor antennae that comes with the system? At some point, I'll get it up on the roof but that's going to be a while.

Change the details as soon as you turn your miner back on. Go to your helium app under setting then go to “update settings”. If you bought an antenna from Amazon go to custom antenna and energy the details.

awesome setup, Im curious, do you have to use any electrical tape or anything on the cable or the antenna or are they weather proof just by getting them screwed in properly.. secondly, that wire for the ground should be routed into that hole in the arrestor.. that looks like a very cheep one, most of them have an adapter that hangs of the side with a rubber gromit that you rout the wire into and then tighten down.. but im not an electrician, but I worked on oil rigs for a long time and everything had to be grounded extremely well as you can immagine, and what you did their is a little worrysome.

Thank you. The electrical tape is not necessary but if we had some I would of definitely thrown some on there lol. I’ve worked with 3 different arrestors n the screw was the same for all 3. I’m also not an electrician but if a lightning bolt hits the antenna a little 1 millimeter screw is that sits on the arrestor is not gonna make a difference 😎.

@@CesarCinema you should back bond the arrestor to the jmount, then ground the wire to the j mount and to the ground source. That galvanized clamp won't provide much bonding as it's barely contacting the arrestor. Also, use slick washer on the nut you lost..the wind will cause the nut to back off or use another nut to double nut them. It'll become out of level in time. Black zip ties will resist UV breakdown..which is why cable as an exterior PVC jacket that is black in outdoor applications...thanks for the proof of work videos

From what I've been reading in these comments it sounds like we are supposed to ground the mast and also place the lightning arrestor inline near where the antenna wire enters the home. Make sure to Include a drip loop, and plug the hole (ask your hardware store for the right spray or caulk to plug it). Also a lot of people complained about the signal loss per foot of antenna wire. So a better solution might be to place the miner in an outdoor enclosure closer to the antenna - but then the comments talk about using PoE (power over ethernet) to power the miner since there are no nearby power outlets.

Well direct TV company in San Diego doesn’t normally ground their dishes but you should check your local regulations. But if a lightning bolt ⚡️ hits it it can start a fire because the electricity has nowhere to go.

Just buy a 4 foot piece of copper grounding rod.. and take a sledge hammer pound it in as far as it will go with a little showing, and buy a grounding rod connector and just run the wire to the new rod.. happy mining.

The LMR600 is twice as thick as the LMR400 and it loses less dbi but it’s not by much. The LMR400 is cheaper, easier to bend and thinner than the LMR600 so the choice is yours but the dbi loss is nothing to lose sleep over.

You need a drip loop where the cable goes into the garage. Water will flow down the wire and directly into the walls, and water + wood is very bad long term (termites, rot, etc.). Also, that hole is an invitation for rodents to make a home in your garage. You will want to plug that up as well. Good job otherwise.

The lmr cable is set up to fail, neglecting to wrap the connections tightly with electrical tape will allow moisture to enter the cable, common mistake, also lightning arrestor works best if installed at the point where the cable enters the building.

Hehe, that's a _male_ RP-SMA! It's confusing, but the RP stands for "reverse polarity", so it's the opposite than regular SMA! A male SMA connector has the pin, a male RP-SMA connector has the socket! The important part are the threaded part, if it has threads it's a female, if it has the nut it's a male

Hi Friend. I plan to buy 7 hotspots and install one in the middle and the other 6 around like a circle (with 8dbi outdoor anttenas). The distance of each device is 300m. I think it could work. You might just want to try it with 2 first and see your results before you buy that many. Good luck and let me know how it goes.

@@CesarCinema bro all u need to find out earnings is the name the miner gave itself on setup. Anybody can search up the earnings on Helium Explorer if they know the miner name. Its free/public info.

another thing of note, is that your supposed to turn off the miners when you switch the antenna type, at least it says that for nebra, and rak miners, and a tip you can research when you upgrade an antenna height and DBI, often times it doesnt recognize it on the helium heatmap, apparently from what ive read, is that you can manually go and change the height and the DBI of the antenna, and the way the helium network works it will actually improve your miners witnesses and challenges because of how their algo works. but other than that thank you for the video.

That might be true about plugging it in first bc this is not the first comment about that lol. To me it doesn’t make a difference but if you are setting yours up make sure everything is connected before turning on. Luckily our miner didn’t spontaneously combust. You are very welcome

I think I fell victim to my own ignorance on that topic. Everything is running well (Synced, 1.0, Online, Diagnostics good, all green), except since I changed antennas without unplugging, not had one witness. I am invisible-went from 49 witnesses to 0, ~1HNT/day to 0.01HNT/day. Running Blind Beacon... don’t forget to unplug!

is it possible to skip the lightning stuff? i live in a semi dessert so rain is rare here, and even when it does there are a lot of higher surfaces so i wouldnt worry to much about it, if something like that happen then i would just disconnect the minner in rainy days so it would only fried my antenna

Yes it’s connected via wifi. Yes same connections for the FreedomFi miner.

You didn't check if that antenna is already grounded! So basically it may be that your lightning arrestor is redundant. You may just ground pole and have almost 2dB better signal
