A lady who supports feral cats says to use thick styrofoam boxes (from like medical places -hospitals and labs for free), cut a 5-6 inch diameter hole up high so snow doesn’t get in. Line it with straw for insulation and bedding because it doesn’t stay wet (no blankets -they ice over). Tape the lid on with packing tape or duct tape so it doesn’t blow off. She’s had great success for 15 years. Happy kitties. :)

by far the best outdoor house I have seen!! I was NEVER a cat person quite the opposite until a old stray beat up tom cat found us! we feed a group of outside cats now, and have done what we can where we currently are, but are moving to a new location (mostly for the yard FOR the cats) and are going to catch and take them with us, and are looking for ideas for outdoor shelters and THIS IS THE BEST ONE WE HAVE SEEN!! This is what we are going to try to reach for and you sir are a cool amigo. (i usually say "cat" but that would have looked way lame ! lol) thanks for sharing and thanks for being so great to a little creature!! way cool!!

@@handebarlas6248 Its known that this happens in bigger cities, stray dogs are generally harmless but you can find groups of them acting like that and being slightly aggressive, an example of this would be herd dogs (sheep/goat guarding dogs) also have a pack mentality and live differently from city dogs so their reaction to strangers like humans for example could be aggressive sometimes, that being said the herd dogs i have seen are friendly but it could be different if it was a human from the city that is scared of them and i say that cause there have been couple incidents like that in the past.

Nice......................I do this too. My 2 indoor cats came to me this way. My boy Christmas was a 2009 Christmas miracle and had nearly froze to death as a kitten and my girl Kallie calico found 1 of my heated cat houses in 2013. To this day I have 5 heated cat houses that give cats a bit of rest with food/Shelter and water and another chance at life here in Cold Minneapolis. Cats need very little and never ask for much. That's awesome! It's inspired me to build one too. And I don't even have a cat....but my house is in the middle of some kind of 'cat highway' so I get a lot of visitors. To really make it luxurious, you could put in a small window, say 4 or 5 inches square. Triple pane it with lexan/plexiglass from the big box hardware stores, with a little air gap between the layers for insulation.

The drawback to a 2nd door on the opposite side is additional heat loss during the winter months. I live in northern Illinois. Do you live in a warmer climate than northern Illinois?

​@@davea6314 I live in Staten Island, NY, which gets cold, but not Northern Illinois cold. I have a bought model with a PVC curtain to help. Unfortunately, we have other cats that try to expand their territory, raccoons, and even foxes (in NYC, I know, right?). One neighbor cat was torn to shreds and unfortunately it was in a camera blind spot.

That is just too cool. I have an indoor cat and an outdoor one. My outdoor cat just doesn’t like being in the house. I bought her “kitty tubes” her and a stray that comes around for food likes them. They do not even compare to your shelter! only mice I see are ones she is eating or batting around as well. No destructive chipmunks around anymore either ! You did good, she earns her keep. Thank you for keeping your cats inside where they're safe! I understand that some feral cats are really not happy living inside but I've got 14 inside-only cats now, 10 were feral that lived outside anywhere from 5 to 10 years and now they never go out so I had a nice catio built ! Also, thank you for taking care of the neighborhood strays and ferals! That's how I ended up with 16 total, for now anyway!

This is by far the most deluxe cat house i have ever seen. You SHOULD be proud of it. Problem is when you take care of as many as some of us do it's a little much. I now rely on straw and insulation only because I take care of 11 cats, thankfully all of them neutered. Thank you for caring for an outside cat.

Very awesome, also the doorway maze would help her escape from large predators. My 3 babies are indoor kitties. But we have a bunch of neighborhood kitties that are outside in the elements. We have rescued some and found homes for them. There are a couple that the neighbors own, but they leave them out all the time. They all end up hanging out at our house. I would love to make something like this to keep them safe and cozy too.

She’s got her own apartment lol. I love it! Wish I could build this for my mostly outdoor cat. He comes in to hang out and eat throughout the day, but he doesn’t use a litter box so he stays out at night. Idk why he has a very bad habit of pooping on the guest bed only when he has to go potty. I want him to stay safe and warm year round when he’s out.

You may have a catch and release program in your area for neutering and vaccinating feral cats. They will help you with live trapping then return them fixed and tagged. Great service!

I am thinking about building a cathouse but I wanted to heat with solar so it wouldn't be a drain in me 💲. Lots of great detail. Only thing missing is some pitch on the roof so it doesn't collect and absorb moisture. Stick a two by four laying flat under the back side to give it a little pitch after u flex seal it. Im sure the cat won't mind.

Thanks for sharing. I also built a heated cat house but larger for 4 cat siblings. They made it through last winter OK. The cat house is insulated with padded sleeping places and a flap door. The current problem are sly raccoons that raid their cat house for food after dark. This summer I've only been feeding my cats during daylight until I can trap the raccoons. However it was a problem when I had to work late and the sun set earlier. These raccoons are clever, so getting rid of them is challenging. I'm looking into 2 different electronic door designs for the cats to keep the raccoons out. I live in northern Illinois.

Love this! We 'housed' several feral cats in our garage and I was concerned for them in the winter without heat. Hubby placed heating pads under the blankets, but insisted they had to leave during the day, so he put the pads on timers so they were only at night!

Great build. The ice cubes in the water are a nice touch. Rather than a timer, you might try a terrarium heat controller, such as those by Inkbird or Zilla. That would eliminate the need for constant attention, along with any risk of overheating in the winter, and can also be used in the summer. A ceramic heat emitter provides heat with no visible light to disrupt sleep cycles. They also more rugged than a light bulb and longer lasting.
