I've had the chance to use this table a couple of times now. It's fun to whip out in front of people:) I can see what people are talking about when they say the legs are delicate, but they're design to support a "mostly" vertical load, not be torqued from the side or pushed back into place. If you just let the table open or close on it's own and don't force anything, it works great kzbin.infoUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh Once it's set up, it's pretty solid. My only gripe would probably be related to the clamps provided. They're not the highest quality. They do the job, so no big deal, but they could be better. All in all, pretty cool gadget.

Really like the video! Just a quick tip for everybody, including you Mike. When making cuts on a piece that is longer than it is wide, example @ 7:14 , use the miter gauge that normally comes with a table saw. This will reduce the chance of kickback. This will keep the material to the left of the blade from twisting and getting grabbed by the saw. For a non-experienced person, making this type of cut "free hand" like Mike does here is very dangerous. Obviously, you have experience making this cut, but even the experienced can have accidents. Safety 24/7 !

Very good video Mike, i like all the features you put into the outfeed table i am a firm believer in having a permanent outfeed table you can count on for safetey mainly i always hated the roller stands that always seemed to fall over When you needed it the most ! Putting you in a dangerous situation by taking your focus from the table saw lets be honest a table saw is a dangerous tool that requires full concentration to operate it safely i spent over 20 years in Architectual Woodworking as a profession and every one i know that has had a accident with a table saw has had the same comment that it happened so fast they couldn’t believe that it was true or that it did ? Keep in mind all of those people were very experienced men/ women who had spent many hours using table saws without prior incidents

Two quick questions please. 1) Will you be extending slots from saw into table top for sled going past the end of the saw surface 2) Do you think MDF is a good enough material for table top. Once that factory smooth finish is penetrated or damaged I find it to be garbage. I figured Baltic Birch plywood may have been better. Awesome design though thanks for the video much appreciate people like you taking the time to do this for us on the other end of the camera. 👍
@WoodshopMike6 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard, Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed the build! 1) I will extend the slots when I make a cross cut sled that deep enough to require them. This is a Powermatic 72A and the tabletop of the saw is very deep. I can you a miter gauge without it running into the outfeed table! 2) The top of this outfeed table is hardboard. If it does end up getting damaged I'll just unscrew it from the table and replace it! So far I've not had any trouble with it though.

Thank you! It's made a big impact in the shop already. What about the grain direction threw you off? Do you mean the continuous grain across the fronts, or that the grain is going vertically for the drawer boxes?
@LostWhits6 жыл бұрын
Mike, the vertical direction on drawers was a little odd for me at first. But we use white melamine here in Australia, Plywood is not so common. Also the horizontal door grain next to the vertical grain direction on the drawer cabinet. But like you said, its a shop project. Do you seal the inside of the cabinets?

@WoodshopMike6 жыл бұрын
ryan detzel with a 1hp (about 600 cfm) dust collector it's not too bad. I'll be upgrading the dust collector down the road though. I suspect something about 1500cfm is needed for this size downdraft table. If you made the downdraft section smaller than what's shown in the plans you'd be fine with a 1hp dust collector. Thanks for watching and good luck!

Thanks! The dust collection works alright, but there are a few tweaks I need to make to my dust collector. Now that you have had time to use the table over a variety of projects, I'm curious about how satisfied you are with the flatness of the table and the the effectiveness of the down draft table? That looks like a lot of work to create without some cnc help. I need something like this for the new table saw I will soon be purchasing.
@WoodshopMike4 жыл бұрын
The flatness of the table top is excellent and has been great for assembly work. I honestly don't use the down draft portion frequently for sanding, but I do use it for dog hole accessories 👍🏻

@@WoodshopMike Thank you, for the quick reply. I appreciate it very much! I think I'll take your lead and build it or something very similar. I need anything and everything to held with dust control. Your drawers would have been stronger with the tongue on the front and back panels instead of the sides. all the load in a drawer is front too back. You push the drawer shut, the stiff in it impacts on the back. You pull it out the stuff in it impacts the front. That is why traditional dovetailed drawers have the tails on the sides, and pins on the front and back pieces.

OK, so I've never used a downdraft table before, although I'd love to have one. I would have expected that you'd want smaller holes so that the suction velocity stays high enough. How well do those 1" holes work in your table? Do you ever wish they were smaller, or does that size work really well? I suppose it depends a lot on the volume that your dust collector can pull.
@WoodshopMike6 жыл бұрын
That's a great question! Yes, typically the holes are much smaller but I wanted them this size many do I could use bench dog style clamps. The holes are actually 3/4 once then sleeves are in & I use the Kreg Tool and Armor Tools clamps in the table which work great! My little 1hp dust collector doesn't pull enough volume of air to make the entire down draft area usable, my intention from the start was too have my 2hp dust collector ducted to it though. Now I just have to actually make that happen! lol

Maybe an odd question, but do you find the torsion box *sounds* like a solid surface, or hollow sounding like a drum? I've been curious if the dividers stop that, but e.g. using an orbital sander on something on a concrete floor is just a little buzz, while doing the same on top of a big cabinet sounds like a v8. As a suburban night-owl woodworker, I try to cut noise wherever I can.

I've not noticed any hollow buzzing sounds to it when sanding or using using the Domino/biscuit joiner. Hope that helps 👍🏻👍🏻

Mike, when you are installing the cabinet doors in this vid, how do you know how far in the cabinet base to install the plates for the hinges? Thanks.
@WoodshopMike6 жыл бұрын
I think that distance is usually printed for most hinges, but I didn't even bother to look with the hardware I used :) Once I put the hinges on the doors, I just "closed" the hinge and measured from the inside of the door to the center line of the mounting holes for the hinge. Hopefully I explained that well enough :) Let me know!
@befmx316 жыл бұрын
Sorry but not really. When you say "the inside of the door", do you mean the inside EDGE of the door?When you say "center line of the mounting holes for the hinge" do you mean you clip the plate on the hinge and measure to the center line of the mounting holes in the PLATE? Thanks again.
@WoodshopMike6 жыл бұрын
No worries! Yes, measuring from that inside edge will work! I was actually referring to the inside face of the door, but that edge will work just fine! Yes, I did clip the plates onto the hinge and take my measurement. Cheers!

Some more feedback. Cut list page S-3.02 is tricky. The way it’s laid out there’s currently no easy way to break down the full sheet. It would be easier if the orange DW-03 pieces lined up with the bottom, instead of wasting that bit, this way you could cross cut your sheet at the total height (plus 1/8 kerf) of piece CF-05 & DR-02 Right now that crosscut is kind of guess work as you do not label the dimensions of the waste

That torsion box top seems a bit overbuilt to me. Is there a reason you beefed it up so much?
@WoodshopMike6 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, thanks for asking. You could go a bit thinner with the torsion box but it wouldn't save that much weight but you do gain more stability under heavy loads. Since I use this table for outfeed as much as I do assembling heavy projects I wanted the extra strength to help prevent the top from deflecting over time. If you're only going to do lighter projects/tasks on the bench then you could knock the thickness down to about 2" for the internal members and space them out a bit more. Hope that helps!

I don’t know how to contact you. I don’t go onto any of the social media platforms. So I’m stuck with this. I payed for your out feed table plans. Unfortunately every time I try to continue with the download I’m directed to a Mac system. My system is windows 10. I was under the impression that I would be receiving a pdf file. Instead, I was directed to a site that converts pdf to something I have no knowledge about so I’m not doing that. So, I’m asking you to please reply to this comment and let me know how to get the pdf minus the BS. Thank you.

Oh geez thank you for reaching out! I've not had others have this issue so not sure what's going on. Have you tried right clicking the link and opening it in a new tab? If you're still having trouble shoot me an email at mike@woodshopmike.com well get ya squared away👍🏻👍🏻

I'd love to make that bench but I bet it's a lot harder to do than it looks like in this video. Nice job! 👍👍👍
@WoodshopMike6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! It's not that difficult if a build it just has a handful of extra things you don't normally have to do in a cabinet build 👍🏼

Excellent, how long did it take you?
@WoodshopMike6 жыл бұрын
I can't even remember now 😂😂😂 I think it took about 3 weeks, but if I hadn't been filming I think it would have taken about 1-1/2 weeks.

It's a relatively simple way to make a very flat work surface for benches!

No one should be comfortable cross cutting against the parallel fence. That ist just wrong.

Nice project, but dude..... really..... get rid of that fly cutter while you still have all of your fingers.
@WoodshopMike5 жыл бұрын
😂😂😂 yeah the fly cutter wasn't a great idea! Much better to use that in a dry press only.

Beginners... don't watch this too many dangerous practices. Surprised this guy has all his fingers. It's a nice project but why don't guys like this demonstrate best practices. Yeah you should be using a crosscut sled and maybe install the blade guard too.
