Outgrowing God: Richard Dawkins in Conversation

Richard Dawkins was fifteen when he stopped believing in God. Deeply impressed by the beauty and complexity of living things, he felt certain that they must have had a designer. Learning about the theory of evolution changed his mind. In his 2019 book, Outgrowing God: A Beginner’s Guide to Atheism, Dawkins provides an accessible primer to atheism for readers looking to rethink some of the big questions that shaped his own path towards seeing the magnificence of a world without God.
In twelve fiercely funny, mind-expanding chapters, Dawkins explains how the natural world arose without a designer-the improbability and beauty of the “bottom-up programming” that engineers an embryo or a flock of starlings-and challenges head-on some of the most basic assumptions made by the world’s religions: Do you believe in God? Which one? Is the Bible a “Good Book”? Is adhering to a religion necessary, or even likely, to make people good to one another? Dissecting everything from Abraham’s abuse of Isaac to the construction of a snowflake, Outgrowing God is a concise, provocative guide to thinking for yourself.

Eleven years ago I read The Greatest Show On Earth, was THE BOOK..that blew my mind wide open...then The God Delusion...I went down the rabbit hole of this and everything evolution and geology...and after 46 years of pentecostal indoctrination..it took ten years to un-indoctrinate me and I made up my own mind...I took my non-belief in "other gods" one god further.

Your story reflects mine as well, with only negligible differences. I had tamped down doubts in my youth until I finally realized that skepticism of religion is not a bad thing. Joseph Campbell got me started and Dawkins carried me to the finish line, so to speak. The hardest part was dealing with family. Ty for sharing.

I was struggling to reconcile my pentecostal faith with evolution, but it wasn't until I had finally had enough, got brutally honest and asked myself the following: "IF God is who he says he is and is the truth, then he should have nothing to be afraid of by me researching the evidence to get the truth. I should only prove that God exists." Then in my honest research, I was able to see that in evolution's favour, there were mountains of evidence of an old earth, from astronomy, geology, archaeology, paleontology, geography, biology, astro-geology, chemistry and even astrophysics and mathematics, yet on the other side the evidence wasn't just limited, is was almost entirely absent and the book of Genesis was clearly incompatible with an old earth. Most biblical stories had no archaeological evidence where there should be, particularly the lack of a single spearhead, chariot wheel, helmet, sword, buckle, shield etc in the red sea in which the Egyptians were said to have drowned in. Yet evolution has made and continues to make accurate predictions such as the CMBR and the types of fossils we should find at different strata layers. If this were a court room, I'd hate to be put in prison on flimsy evidence when there's mountains of evidence to the contrary. Once I accepted that there was clearly only one reasonable, logical position, everything else that no-one could answer relating to Christianity started to make sense (e.g. do young children go to heaven when they die? how does someone with dementia get saved? why is God credited for good things but not bad things?). It still hurts to this day to know that everything I held to be true as a child was a lie and that there is no afterlife. I still need more time to let go of it all, but it didn't take any special book for me, just being intellectually honest with the truth and logic.

What bugs me is that even bright, educated people cant see a King/Dictator "God" in these religions. Ancient people had little knowledge or education - they used the most powerful man of their day as a template for God Easy to spot - if we get down on our knees, beg & grovel to this "God" he will be pleased and let us stay in his kingdom or else out we go Simple, primitive ideas from simple, primitive people Seeing bright, educated people of today blindly following these ideas is frightening

@Simply Ayman - It is sad, that you only changed one lie for another. He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth [Mohammed and Richard Dawkins]: he that cometh from heaven [JESUS] is above all. And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. John 3, 31‭-‬36

Covid-19 is a heaven sent punishment to show God is still the Supreme Boss in charge of the universe. Atheists likes to boast science is the answer to everything. Show me please. Has science defeated the trillions of viruses & cancer yet? Dream on, atheists! It was a walk-in, Sue could engulf a standing adult human in one jaw-stroke, she had 50 10-inch teeth and jaw crushing-power of 2000 ppsi. Good thing humans and T-Rex's never shared the planet. Reply @davidbanner6230 Do you think it possible that their demise had purpose? How many millions of years did it take to evolve such creatures? Is nature so wasteful? And if so, is our annihilation just as tenuous, at the whim of a madman? Then life has no purpose, and evolution has no purpose, reason, or destiny? Then this would mean that Atheists are right, there is no God, and the Universe/existence has no purpose? Seems to me a mighty waste of time.....which also has no purpose?

When we talk about science and religion, there's a mistake that often creeps in. We tend to mix up the terms: "believe in" and "trust'. Defenders of the religious standpoint would often say: "Well, you rationalists do not believe in God - so you do believe in science instead". Wel, not exactly. We do not believe in science (like we do not believe in anything else) - instead, we trust the evidence to the degree our current scientifical knowledge allows us.

@davy boy While I agree that we should outgrow gods, it is worth remembering that we are really still primitive ignorant people wearing suits and mashing keyboards. People still primarily think tribalistically. Thus, the reason for outgrowing gods should not be based on "herp they were dum dum we are SMRT", but instead based on "we have found enough evidence to show that this thing we believed in is false". It might sound meaningless to make the distinction, but it isn't. If we use the idea of people of the past being ignorant as valid justification to discard their ideas, we risk throwing out the baby with the bathwater, throwing out what is broadly correct along with the dead dogma like religion. Remember that these people survived in inhospitable times and managed to maintain rather stable systems despite their lack of knowledge. That means they did know *some* useful things, and weren't complete fools. We should approach every claim made individually, uncaring as to whether it comes from the past or present, and critique it using logic, reason and science, based on the merits of that individual claim. We should never justify discarding an idea on the basis of "it was a primitive ignorant people". Apart from being an ad hominem, you also risk justifying the discarding of ideas based on political views about who is "ignorant" in the modern world. Set aside *when* the bible was written, *who* wrote it, and *why* they wrote it. Examine the claims made in the bible and compare with reality. Once you have answers to those, *then* you bring in the when, who and why, not to lambast them for "ignorance", but instead to ask "why did they make the claim?". Avoid tribalism, even against the people of the past.

I think the thing I enjoy most about listening to any of of Dawkins' anecdotes, or indeed those of Christopher Hitchens, is that they're so frequently and so readily able to pluck obscure references from comparatively high profile literary works. Then, after quoting this famous person or that, Hitchens or Dawkins will continue and elaborate on their point and explain their ideas. This always left me with the impression that while these men were obviously very well read, they didn't rely on other people's quotes. Instead, while telling their own stories with their own ideas and their own points, they're able to include snippets of ideas from history's great thinkers. Or in other words, they're able to use obscure quotes from famous figures as a window into their own thinking and ideas, rather than using them as a foundation for their arguments.

@@badboy8526 I've read the christian bible before. I've also read the Hebrew bible, so I know how much it has been changed by the christians. I've read them both and they are both entirely make-believe. They're as real as the Harry Potter stories are. The ONLY person who ever died and then came back to life was Gandalf. And he only came back to the shores of the living for as long as it took to complete his tasks. So sayeth the Almighty 'Red Book Of Westmarch', or 'The Lord of the Rings.' See? I can pretend that my favourite storybook is true, too! It doesn't make it actually and objectively true. Or maybe you've actually got some actual evidence that these stories are actually true? Do you? Do you have any evidence? Not more stories, mind you, but real empirical evidence that can be shared, measured and examined, that is repeatable and that is independently verifiable. Do you have any such evidence to show that these stories are anything more than fairytales and myths? Ps: If you don't have any real evidence, you're going to have to face the reality that these stories are just stories and that they aren't true. The biblical Jesus and God and Satan are all just fictional characters in a fictional story. Your 'Heaven' is as real as Hogwarts is from Harry Potter. Satan is as real as Voldemort and Hell is as real as Slytherin House in Hogwarts. They're all just tall tales from fictional stories.

I gotta say, Dawkins must be doing something right because he looks & sounds amazing for an 80 year old. Most men would look like a shriveled-up raisin by that age, but he doesn't look a day over 70. His intellect still seems as sharp as ever. Truly a man blessed by the noodly appendage.
@briansmith3791

Fyigija: Dawkins looks 'amazing' for his age simply because he has lived a privileged life. Brought up with servants, to a private school in UK, from there to Oxford where he has lived for 50 years or so. He hasn't suffered as most of us have and this explains his lack of compassion.

@FyIgija : In the Talk 'Something from Nothing' with Lawrence Krauss, Dawkins let his guard down. In answer to a question on the belief in a God by the suffering people in the World, Dawkins said "who cares what comforts them, who cares what helps them sleep at night." Krauss tried to dig Dawkins out of the hole, but it was too late. We had heard what he said. That, plus his "no sympathy for Julian Assange" sums up his view of the 'non-elite'. And who says Dawkins knows the truth about a creator?
@Durzo1259
@Durzo1259 2 жыл бұрын
@@briansmith3791 This world is riddled with problems & suffering because people choose to believe whatever makes them feel best, instead of what actually works. Problems don't get solved by leaning on falsehoods that make you feel better, they get solved by finding the hard truth so you can find real solutions. So yes, who cares? The most compassionate act is to give people the truth so they can find real solutions at the root of their problems, not to give them a delusion that acts as an emotional band-aid. Dawkins doesn't *know* the truth about a creator, any more than we *know* the truth about leprechauns. We can only argue for what's vastly more likely to be true.
@briansmith3791
@briansmith3791 2 жыл бұрын
@@Durzo1259: Firstly, the question to Dawkins was something like"..what about the belief in a god of those in the world who are suffering, hanging-on with their fingertips, with no hope..?" "Who cares" indeed. And what's this "hard truth" you're on about? Dawkins has the truth? That there is no creator? How does he know that? Yet he travels the world preaching there is no God. What's more likely to me, after looking at the science, i.e.That this Universe did not come from Nothing but came from "incredibly complex geometry." 1^10^10^124.(Penrose) etc, is that something created the Universe. A created Universe is just as likely as a random occurrence. Yes, give people the truth, all of the truth we can find, then let them believe as they wish, as long as their beliefs do not include harm to other lifeforms.

I outgrew god when I began to be skeptical at around 8 years old. I started asking my parents questions like "where did Cain get his wife? What did all the people and animals eat on the ark? What did they eat afterward? Why aren't there any miracles anymore?" My parents told me it was about having faith, and that faith was the most important thing in the world. They also told me that god stopped performing miracles. At about 12 I was a total nonbeliever. It didn't happen suddenly, but gradually I just outgrew my belief. I don"t understand why so many adults never outgrow it. Intelligent, rational adults who do not believe in astrology or other fairy tale nonsense, yet believe in an invisible, immortal wizard who magically created an entire universe on a whim and takes a personal interest in every single person on this planet.

There is nothing about evolution that is an appeal to magic. That's a fallacy of equivocation. Religious beliefs are dependent upon magic by definition, and nothing in nature can be considered magic or supernatural. The mind is a byproduct of the brain, and evolution can explain this. But philosophical questions about consciousness are completely irrelevant to evolution.
