What a dumb question. "Are you afraid?' duh. Of course any human would be afraid in that circumstance. And he was forced to then answer in a way to overlook that fear, by denying it. Most of those pilots probably just don't want to think about their fear, in order to do their jobs,, which they do regardless. The Black Hawk's first flight was October 17th 1974. That is nearly 50 years ago. To be fair, I believe they are still in production. Some are new, some are retired. There are fairly new variants. It is a proven platform that has been around a good while.

Probably about the same. US forces haven't had to deal with credible anti aircraft threats. The apache would have to operate the same way if it didn't want to eat a missile. The possible benefit could be more accurate area fire of unguided munitions with GPS and advanced fire control computer.

@@Neuzahnstein - that's the catch 22,though. With a helicopter, the only way to get more range is to gain more altitude. It's always a tradeoff. Gaining more altitude to engage at greater range means exposing the helicopter to radar guided SAMs that have a longer range than the shoulder launched SAMs that they'd have to deal with if they remain lower but have to get closer. An apache would be limited to similar tactics, ranges, and weapons (unguided rocket) that is shown in the video if it didn't want to eat a missile. Our guys haven't had to deal with this type of anti air coverage. If the US were fighting this war, we'd throw enough jets and cruise missiles up at the same time as the helicopters and artillery would be supporting tanks and infantry. SAM radar sites are less of a problem if they're overwhelmed by targets, are destroyed by those targets, or simply don't turn the radar in to avoid being destroyed. Infantry fired SAMs are less of a problem if that infantry has to pick up a rifle or RPG instead to deal with a more imminent problem. Unfortunately, Ukraine simply doesn't have the amount of machines and command and control to support such combined arms operations involving aircraft. Even in the US scenario, we'd still lose jets and pilots just as we did in Iraq 1 when they had credible air defenses. Well, they had air defenses for the first few days until they'd been destroyed by the overwhelming air power thrown at them. Then again, unlike Russia, Iraq had no credible air force to attempt to fend off our attacks.

Six months for the F-16 training is what I estimated too. But I've heard Ukrainian pilots, of which there aren't many, started training on simulators many months ago already. This should shorten the training time significantly, I believe. Also, the earlier the training starts, the sooner Ukraine can field these jets, and the sooner the war ends, lowering the number of casualties on both sides.

Some of that training time deals with tactics & other areas of knowledge that experience Ukrainian pilots have already mastered. While there is a lot to learn with a complex fighter aircraft like the F16, the Ukrainians have proven to be highly-motivated & highly-intelligent warriors, so I have a hunch that they wouldn't need 6 months. Also, eventually, after Russia has been kicked out of Ukraine & Ukraine joins NATO, the Ukrainian military will have to completely switch over to NATO equipment, and - since Ukraine will still have Russia as their neighbour - the Ukrainian military will need to have a lot of F16s in their arsenal. So, NATO may as well train Ukrainian pilots on the F16 & give Ukraine a large number of F16s now.
