UPDATE: My Color Rankings should have Green at #1 and then shift down the other colors accordingly. I did not factor in how the consistently powerful Rares in Green would impact things, as I usually focus on Commons and Uncommons for my Draft Guides. Hopefully that clarifies things!

I'm so thankful for these videos. I don't really want to watch an entire set review (with two bonus sheets!), so this is perfect for getting a feel for the environment. And they way you present the info is so organized and concise. One thing that might be a nice addition is just a small section on build-around bombs. Cards that are worth pivoting for based on how insane they can be in draft.
@NicolaiBolas9 ай бұрын
I’m so glad you’re enjoying my guides! I think the bombs section is not super necessary for two reasons. First, individual rares do not come up as much so they are not as important to know. Second, players are often inclined to take rares anyway and it can be pretty clear when a rare is very good. I have to be careful not to include too many sections in my guide because (as you said) one of the benefits is that it is pretty quick and straightforward. I hope that clarifies things and I appreciate your kind comment!
@001100009 ай бұрын
@@NicolaiBolas That totally makes sense. I think I get too irrationally excited when I see a rare and pivot my whole draft plan to shoehorn it in, even when it's not that good lol

Green looks pretty insane in this format. I would put blue as the lowest.
@NicolaiBolas9 ай бұрын
I actually really like a lot of Blue’s cards, even ones I wasn’t able to highlight in the guide, and I think it has a lot of powerful options (and instant speed strategies can be very good and challenging to play against when done well). Green has lots of good cards too, but I worry playing big creatures won’t be as impactful as it might normally be, since this is a set where players will prioritize removal and interaction a bit higher thanks to Crimes. I also think color rankings are basically always very close and can shift based on a player’s inherent strategy preferences or skill level to some degree. Green can be one of the trickier colors to play because it almost always relies on creatures for its interaction, which can make it harder to remove opposing threats. Blue can also struggle with interaction sometimes, but I think it has some good options in this set. Hopefully this provides some more insight into my thought process.

8:30 Just went 2-1 with Boros Aggro. Didn't get prosperity, did get posse and signpost. The white 1/3 with lifeline put in work in the late game with huge pumps, and the lack of board clear makes late game full sweeps a problem. It may be a bug on arena, but the white spree card doesn't duplicate the +1/+1 counter mode if you only target yourself as a player, but it's still a good card to buff the mercs. Be on the lookout for Outlaws Merriment as a Yellow Card; it'll probably wheel cause it's very boros at 1,2W,R. You can get away with very little mana if you draft your dual land and as many of the mana dork scarecrows, also good for two life etb. 11 or 12 lands is fine, one more white source. Avoid all slow effect; you need to go fast. The only plot effects you go for are those that benefit after casting a big Posse; the +1/+1 and Vig. and the +1/+1 on self for each creature come to mind. Note, if you draft the mono red 4 mana 3/4 that grants 2r when ever you cast, you reverse the order, casting both for two to get +4 on the Posse cast. Very powerful colors cause of how contested black will be, how slow the other strategies in white are, and honestly how busted the signpost is; players do not expect to see her swing for 4 on the next turn so they will almost always leave up too little too block.

Azorius for some reason is the only color pair who didnt get a rare... don't get it...
@NicolaiBolas9 ай бұрын
It's probably because they wanted to balance things out considering they made a Bant rare and an Esper rare (which means there are already 2 rares that have blue and white in the identity). There is also an Azorius mythic which is not exactly the same but is in a similar vein (and also a Bant mythic). I don't really check whether all the rares line up into the same number per color pair since I feel like it's more fun if they focus on the individual designs rather than feeling like they have to make a rare in a certain color combo just to check a box (as long as it isn't too drastically skewed).

As I've come to expect from your top commons, you really give me something to think about. What I really want to do with Rooftop Assassin as a combat trick is combine it with Reckless Lackey's natural first strike, given that the opponent might think that what you're holding open is the Lackey's ability. Similarly I really want to use Lively Dirge to bring back Ruthless Lawbringer and Nezumi Linkbreaker, since I feel that this combination of cards would justify using 5 mana to search up either creature that is not in your graveyard yet. Granted that only one copy of Ruthless Lawbringer is not a justifaction for Lively Dirge having a slot, but if it is also another copy of Rictus Robber and/or Baron Bertram Graywater as well as able to bring back(/forth) a combo piece like Treasure Dredger with a value piece such as an Outlaw Medic I'm thinking that it stops being a trap. #OutlawDrafter
@NicolaiBolas9 ай бұрын
I’m glad you liked the video! I usually pick trap cards if they are misleading, have a downside that people might misjudge, or if they are effects that are easy to overrate. Someone new to the set might see a mill card and assume the archetype is supported, or a Commander player might be used to playing cards like Beast Within without realizing that they are bad in draft. Some cards have a time or place where they still fit in, but I still list them as traps if I think people will frequently misevaluate them or put them into decks where they don’t belong. Hopefully that clarifies things! Also, I like the combos you pointed out!

I guess if they had more than one creature with first/double strike it would be useful.
@NicolaiBolas9 ай бұрын
Well you wouldn’t cast it in response. Instead, you would let the opponent’s quick draw resolve, then you cast yours and their creature would lose First Strike. It makes no sense to cast a quick draw in response to a quick draw because of how the stack works as you said.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think it applies to sealed because the color pairs will generally have similar plans and the good cards are generally good in both formats. The main difference is that sealed tends to be a bit slower and a little less focused on synergy, so keep that in mind when building your decks and evaluating cards that require a specific gameplan.

Is Lively Dirge really a trap? The 4 mana mode seems pretty good if you can get two bodies back; its break even on mana but card advantage. And the 5 mana mode just makes it even more flexible. I'm having a hard time evaluating this one in limited. In constructed, well commander at least, the card is bonkers, second best Entomb effect in the format imo.
@NicolaiBolas9 ай бұрын
I don’t really think about card advantage in that way. Spending 4 mana to get 4 mana of cards from your graveyard isn’t really providing a tremendous advantage, especially because 2 drops are almost always at their best on turn 2, so getting them back later is much less helpful. Usually recursion is nice to have because it can get you back the best things from your graveyard, and the fact that this is so limited in what it can do is a big knock against it. Also, many games you won’t be able to get the full 4 mana worth of cards back which is a disaster. Another reason I listed it as a trap is because players are very inclined to overrate cards that have the text, “search your library for a card,” because of cards like Entomb (as you mentioned) or other tutors that have homes in other formats. It’s not a complete blank if you play it, but I think it is bad and also at high risk of being overrated, which is why I listed it as a trap. Hopefully that clarifies things!

@@NicolaiBolasthanks for the additional insight into your thought process. I'm hoping to try the card out in conjunction with Forsaken Miner in b/w where there are some decent sac outlets at common/uncommon; I feel like if I can ever Entomb the forsaken miner and reanimate two things in that archetype I'll be living my necromancer dreams lol

@@NicolaiBolas ya that's fair, the power levels between the colors is pretty tight. I’ve done that sort of thing in other videos before, but I don’t know how much it adds to clarity when I’m already talking about a card, and sometimes I like to bounce back and forth between cards I’m discussing, so highlighting in those situations would just get difficult and confusing. I try to follow a pattern in the order of cards I discuss such as left to right in the Top Commons or middle to left to right in the Archetype Overviews, which I think helps viewers follow along successfully. I’m glad you liked my guide!

#outlawdrafter Always good to get other opinions. I am curious for the black commons if you overlooked Desperate Bloodseeker, or believe Mourner's Surprise is a better common. 2/2 lifelink for 2 is always good in limited, and it can support green with self-mill and other colors by committing a crime with its etb trigger.
@NicolaiBolas9 ай бұрын
Desperate Bloodseeker was right on the cusp of being on the list and when I first saw it I was definitely very impressed! The card is definitely good and I think it’s pretty comparable in power level to the #2 and #3 commons I picked in Black, especially if you can benefit from graveyard synergies or Crime synergies. I didn’t overlook it, and it was in contention, but I only had room for 3 on that list and I wanted to highlight some of the cards that are inherent 2 for 1s (though I definitely think it is pretty much equal to those cards as I said). Basically, I love the card and think it’s great! One of the reasons I put Black as the number one color is because of cards like Desperate Bloodseeker that I didn’t discuss directly but that I still really like! Hopefully that clarifies my perspective a bit. I’m glad you liked the video!

I actually had a deck in my Prerelease where I was happy playing 2 copies of Lively Dirge (I was basically playing a Reanimator deck). Currently, I think it has a home in the right shell, but I still think players will be prone to overvalue it because of its application in other formats like Commander where deck searching is more valuable. I think a deck needs to check a decent number of boxes before Dirge becomes worth it and many decks won’t meet those requirements.

If two Quick Draws are on the stack, wouldn't the first one played still trigger first strike and remove first strike from the Quick Draw played in response? The second one played resolves first and removes first strike/double strike from creatures. Adds first strike to a creature. Then the first one played resolves and adds first strike afterwards. This Quick Draw would also then remove the first strike triggered by the second Quick Draw played. Quick Draw is better when played first which is cool flavor.
@NicolaiBolas9 ай бұрын
If you played both Quick Draws at the same time it would work that way on the stack, but no one would actually do that. Instead, you wait for the first Quick Draw to resolve and then play yours. That way the first one has already resolved and the one played second gets to remove First Strike and win the combat. Hopefully that clarifies things!
