Hi Alivia! Fellow anthropology major here, just wanted to say thank you and great work on your KZbin channel! Its nice to see someone around my age to talk so passionately about anthropology and infuse it into all forms of life and use it everyday :) Wishing you the best!

This is so sweet, thank you so much!! It’s so hard to find an anthropology community so that’s what I’m trying to create. Let me know if you ever have any questions or video ideas :)

Hello Alivia! Thanks for another video. I haven’t read the book but when you were talking about success I was thinking about how problematic is this concept. Is so embedded in capitalism, neoliberalism, and related to Privilege. It is not a surprise that many examples come from people in the first world with certain class, race, and gender similarities. The chance to dedicate 10.000 hours for computers instead of farming for feeding a family for example talks about that difference. I appreciate how you referred to these variables in your analysis. Also, success is culturally different and also each individual may have their own notions of success. Universalizing a measure for success is a red flag for me. Looking forward for your next videos 😊

Of course! I will say-this book could definitely be more rounded in its construction of success but it’s a start. I agree that representing that some people have easier access to success than others is also really important. Thanks for this comment!!

... but success is univeralized. It is determined how well one prevails in the current and future environment. Success is a snapshot. Dinosaurs were successful for 165 million years ... until they were not.

I think the problem with discussing success is that success varies wildly from field to field and from person to person. So without a prior defined standard we’re left judging a tree for its leaves

This is a wonderful point-I do think this book lacks that specific conversation. Even within fields and cultures success varies immensely. Thank you for bringing this up

I just wanted to suggest this book as food for thought on giving you some closure on the environment conversation, as so far as to point out that the circumstances are indeed special yet not always dependent on having resources as much as they can be for not having them. Ingenuity , by far but timing and necessity for desired outcome play a role . Maybe in the same way that we Anthropologists understand Darwin’s theory on selection.

How do you view Gladwell's indictment of Korean culture in light of the most recent JeJu accident? We'll need to wait for the full investigation report, but his assessment of the KE801 accident decades ago, led to employment upheavals in aviation, particularly Asian airline aviation. Will we be revisiting Gladwell's conclusions?

I recently read Gawande 2007 Better : A surgeons notes on performance, there’s a cultural reference to the success of a doctor in India in regards to a surgery that revolutionized the rate of risk formerly involved. The interesting point being how this Doctor has his practice at a hospital that has very little resources as compared to the western world and he against the odds was able to become an outlier or as Gawande suggests a positive deviant.
