Because the other oems don't know as much about batteries&charging them quickly as tesla does. And they are to proud to ask for help imo. All modern evs absolutely should have a heat pump setup standard across the model lines. All new evs headed to a fast charger need pre conditioning to be standard in anything other than say a 60-75° temp range. Because otherwise the battery won't be warm or cool enough to accept the max c rates. Yet afaik only tesla offers standard pre conditioning en route to a sc on all their model's. All evs need to have standard plug n charge for any charger imo as tesla has offered this since late 2012 with the sc network. I mean people brag endlessly about the new egmp platforms supposed charging capabilities or the other new 800v platforms like taycan&lucid air. But if you match them up tesla still meets or exceeds them on miles of range recovered per minute of charging. Case in point car and driver got 187miles in 15mins on their latest plaid charging test. Tesla has been able to do 70miles or so in just 5mins since late 2019 across it's model line and 180-200+miles in 15-20mins. Which again matches or exceeds anything else on offer still despite only using the 400+v architecture. Plus there are a lot more v3 scs working very reliably then anyone has of the 300+kwh chargers. Ea itself only offers about 5% of their chargers capable of the 300+kwhs. Plus teslas network doesn't suffer from the errors either. 🤔

Electrify America really needs to get this stuff sorted out. In this example we have a charger down for a week, and on top of that connection issues. It really puts me off electric vehicles. So that alone cost a F ton of money. But something tells me that would just bring even more downtime on the current chargers lol, so idk but you are right. It is funny, but an older car, and much less efficient, the Audi etron, will not precondition enroute, however, its BMS really gets the battery up to speed quickly at a DC Fast Charger. So I know that Kyle likes to say that preconditioning should be a requirement for a great charging experience, but there are other ways apparently to solve the cold gating conundrum. Great video as always. (Yes I know that the battery does in fact precondition if you have it plugged into your level 2 at home and charging prior to departure, but that is an entirely different type of preconditioning and again more of a BMS function to get the pack to an optimal operating temperature for your departure alarm which has been set.)

The public chargers getting stuck is the most aggravating part of owning an EV. It happens far too often.
@newscoulomb37052 жыл бұрын
I think the biggest concern with "cold gating" is the delta between charging speeds during cold and ideal temperatures. So a car like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 charging (even at 60 kW) is a concern if the peak would be over 200 kW in ideal conditions because that's less than 30% of the expected speed. Still, it's something that could be worked around on longer trips, as a 60 kW rate on a 77 kWh pack would be perfectly serviceable for meal stop.
@joel890392 жыл бұрын
I have found that once the pack warms up to optimal charging temps it takes 6+ hours to cool back off to slower charging temps. (at around 10 degrees F) So really it is only your first charge of the day that is slower. After that the warm up to max speeds is less than 5 minutes

You need that OBD2 Diagnostic. The latest Munro live is an initial look at the "under hood" systems, including the heating/ cooling. They noted the probability of 2 different cooling loops, one high temp, one low temp (2 bottles/ 2 colors)this matches with the OBD readings from other testers (you know who). There are 2 data readouts. Marked "low temp and high temp. Low tends to run much cooler than high, but fast (ish) charge doesn't Initiate until it reaches 20+° C. By that time the high temp reading is (normally)way up in the 35+ range. But, when that high temp reading hits an upper limit, it cuts fast charge. The result of these settings is a narrow fast charging band. I should note that the early results I saw showed the hot circuit throttling at more like 45°, Bjørn's latest test shows it hitting 53°c...... I wonder if they tweaked it with software?

I don't get the obsession with the silly door handles on EVs. I am sure a normally styled door handle that's kind of flush would be no worse aerodynamically. Its like Tesla started the trend and everybody feels they need to follow it. Tesla door handles seem to break a lot so stick with something that just works. My only issue with a Tesla is the lack of buttons. I don't think you need a button for everything but climate control and wipers should be on controls in my opinion. Less distracting that way, again a change for change sake. They may save a couple of dollars on buttons but for me its just silly. Especially the wipers. They already have stalks on the column use that for the wipers. LOL

Thanks for the input, I have never used EA, and I do not own a tesla, instead a fiat 500e that I cannot wait to switch to a better EV soon. But from what users say about EA, it works well enough to road trip but not as good as it should be. Many EA have down stations which is a bummer. Mean while Tesla seems to always just work and work well. I have been wanted to road trip for the longest now but the interior of the 3 & Y is just too simple for me and that really is the only thing that makes me consider other EV's. So overall I probably will go with a different EV like the ioniq or the Kia ev6. But It is really cool that Tesla users have a reliable charging network for roadtrips
@Mosquito33142 жыл бұрын
I did use a Tesla destination charger via an adapter and and Tesla pulled up to use the other one. The owner was really kind and was actually happy to see another EV other than a tesla. I have this car cause I wanted to try an EV without breaking my bank. He expressed how much better it would be in terms of EV options if Tesla opened up their superchargers to other EV in the US, as he really liked the Audi SUV EV., but ultimately purchased a Y because of the charging network. He was there because he was running an errand and decided to just plug in and get some juice. Meanwhile I was there because my fiat 500e does not have good mile range lol. But regardless, Not all tesla owners are rude about other ev using the chargers. I am aware tesla has started opening superchargers in other countries as a test. But if it happens in the US, People will feel much more comfortable buying an EV and porbably will make the switch soon after that. The influx of users now onthose chargers, well then thats when all hell breaks loose lol

At least with the euro cars, the heat pump in the I5 will suck all the available heat from the pack to heat the cabin. Users have reported below freezing temps even after a deep DC charge followed by a lengthy drive. Did a 1000km test drive with the EV6 AWD a while back. It too dropped temps quite quickly after charging, but unlike the Ioniq5, the EV6 w/winter mode on kept the pack at +6C/ 43F. With both cars, the charging curve is "inverted" in the winter, ie. it will charge faster the longer you charge. However it never reaches the optimal power if the session starts cold.

I have a 72/rwd in Ireland that comes with heat pump and battery heating, on the latest software I charged at about 6 Celsius and got 64kw, assume heat exchanger was heating the battery as fans kicked in at front immediately, after a few minutes fans ramped up to higher speed and charge dropped to 53kw. After about 10 mins the charge speed jumped to 125kw on a 150kw charger and remained there till mid 70 charge state where it tailed off. This behaviour has happened on all 150kw chargers with 50kw chargers giving 46kw normally.

Here is one big problem with buying an all-electric vehicle at this point in time... when you need to recharge it out in the public domain you can notice all the electric charging stations have insufficient or mostly no overhead cover... so, if it is pouring down rain you get soaked while plugging in your car to the charger... then you run to get inside the car, slopping your soaking wetness all over while waiting for it to charge... then run outside again to unplug and hang up the charger... then get back in the car even more soaking wet... don't even know if that is a major electrical hazard or not... definitely not good, and not so in petro stations... most are sufficiently covered to protect you from the elements while refueling.

Okay, I have to ask: did you program the car to take you to a DC fast charge station? If not, then the car won't know that it's going to a DC fast charge station, so it won't precondition the battery. If the Hyundai EVs don't have this feature, then their customers will find out the hard way about "ColdGate". Result: more egg on face of EV. I can drive my Model 3 to a SC, and it will ColdGate just the same as any other EV...because it doesn't know that it's going to a SC! IF I program the car's navicomputer with a SC as waypoint or destination, and IF there is enough energy in the battery for preconditioning, THEN it will precondition!

Many New EV drivers getting their Ioniq 5 now in the winter. This is need-to-know: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaWYoJ55gZKje9U So if it's a cold day and you need to DC fast charge: Use 'The Corelli Charging Method' *** Warning *** Use at your own risk: 1. Drive in Sport Mode with maximum regen Level 3 and cabin heater on high to the charger. 2. Leave the car on and plug it in. Stay in the car. Cabin heater and seat warmers on high. 3. When battery pack temperature hits |15°C| (~60 °F) watch for the charge rate to jump. 4. Immediately turn off the car and all heat for max. peak charge time and charge rate. 5. Now you can go for coffee or do your shopping but be back in 30 minutes. Note: If the cabin heater and charger combined are still not enough to warm the battery pack, ie. charge rate still going down... then, 6. Consider switching Utility Mode on to increase battery drain and give the 12V accessory battery a little bump after a cold night. Lead acid batteries live longer if kept fully charged. (Ready mode would accomplish the same thing while you're driving, but you are running HVAC on high so not so much.) 7. Let me know how it works because I haven't got my Ioniq 5 yet :)) This methodology just makes good physics sense to me. It might do the trick until the preheater firmware update comes. Conclusion: In this video, the battery was too cold to be sufficiently warmed up by charging heat alone. The Battery Management System BMS stepped down to 53 kW to protect the battery instead of ramping up to higher rates of charge. It does this because the LiPoly battery chemistry works slower at lower temperatures. Repeated charging at a high rate on a cold pack would induce Lithium Plating on the battery anodes. This shows up as a lower overall pack voltage and severely reduced driving range. Even if this condition did not occur, the natural battery degradation rate would be more severe. This limit to the rate of chemical electrolysis is also the reason why repeated fast charging is mechanically hard on the battery pack. Level 1 or Level 2 charge whenever you can.
