2:04 I literally laughed out loud when he said that CarPlay and android auto suck. Try texting on Rivian or Tesla for that matter. Talk about suck. The amount of apps that work with either one of those versus the Rivian alone? Come on Jordan. Seriously. It’s just a bummer that you can’t have both along with the really otherwise good Rivian software. But the phone integration with Rivian sucks. And there’s no better way to say that. So having CarPlay where everything is already on your phone and simply being able to use it in your car Does not suck in my personal opinion, but I just blown away that you would say it sucks. I agree there are tons of great things about Rivian software. Phone integration is not one of them.

FYI, the infotainment boards are nearly identical from Gen1 to Gen2. I've compared them and they feel the same. Latest updates have made them pretty snappy (again). It's the self driving computer in the Gen2 that's 10x more powerful than Gen1. Sandy Munroe's latest interview with the head of Rivian's electronics confirmed all of this.

11:45 - I've actually found that Rivian's _Navigation_ range estimate is far more accurate than the "instrument cluster current range". Because the nav takes terrain, weather, and speed into account; while the instrument cluster is purely "you're at _x_ percent, therefore based on EPA rated range, you can go _y_ miles."
@edman007x10 күн бұрын
It is, in fact, Jordan was wrong about the Hud, it doesn't show the EPA number, and it doesn't show a reasonable estimate for your average driving style, in my R1S, it's permanently stuck at 303mi @ 100%, but will show 304mi on a full charge, and derates for pack temp. But the EPA number is 321, and it doesn't actually adjust to weather or vary meaningfully with driving style. So I know I get ~280mi in the winter, nav will compute that number. But you see people time and time again assume that the hud shows a reasonable number, and then complain they were almost stranded because they assumed it was close to correct. That's why the nav needs to show percentage, it gives you a false sense of security, if you are going somewhere and you will arrive with 75mi, you probably don't have the charge to make it to a charger 50mi past it.

The one physical control I wish my Rivian had (that my Mach-E *DOES* have) is a physical defog/defrost button. If I'm driving down the road, and the outside temperature changes suddenly (a not-unusual occurrence in Spring and Fall where I am) the windows can fog up *FAST*, and I don't want to have to look away from the road to activate the defogger. On my Mach-E, it's a physical button on the dash to the left of the steering wheel, I can reach down and turn it on purely by feel. On the Rivian, I have to look at the screen and aim my finger carefully, or else I'll just activate rear window defog or seat heat. And no, voice assistant is terrible at it. It is only successful maybe one time out of five at turning it on. (And it takes more time than a quick "reach, press button by feel" is.)

4:08 it's not disappointing to not have physical buttons, it's a deal breaker lol. As much as I love Rivian, I can't live without climate controls that are usable without looking and without taking off gloves. I would rather have tesla's swipe for putting it in drive than have climate on a touch screen. I like to grade vehicles on their controls something like this: 1 - All touch controls, no stalks for things like blinkers, yoke ect.. (modern Tesla) 2 - Normal driving controls, but climate is all on touch screen (Rivian) 3 - Some climate controls on touch screen but not all (I've seen this in a Chevy Bolt, heated seats and turning heating/air conditioning on or off was touch but not other stuff) 4 - Physical climate controls but some minor driving controls are on the touch screen (Chevy Silverado EV with it's light controls on the touch screen) 5 - All physical controls for essential stuff used while in motion and passing the "glove test" where I can get the car going and climate controls set without taking my gloves off when its cold. To be clear, I want good software and I quite like what I see with Rivian except the slowness (I want snappy before aesthetic) but just give me _tactility_

I have no idea why people desperately want physical controls. Get in the (preheated) car, press brake, shift, and go. Don't need physical controls the entire ride. Steering wheel controls for media/music. Voice controls for everything else.
@JesseSmtns7 күн бұрын
@@Jeroenneman not sure where you live but here in colorado our weather changes a lot and we often are adjusting climate controls throughout a drive. Getting into a car in the morning on a cold day means you’ve got big coats on and want it warm to start but then you get hot and need to lower the temp and the seat heaters. There are also plenty of times where we adjust which air vents are on, such as wanting full defrost on the windshield fogging up or iced or when we want to warm our feet because we got done doing an outdoor activity in the cold. Adjusting these things in a car with physical controls for them is objectively safer and faster. It’s been proven in studies. Voice control is nice to have but pushing a button with your finger is usually less annoying/effort than speaking out a properly syntaxed phrase…. And when you’re talking to people in the car and you have to say “everyone stop talking while I tell my car to turn on the defroster”, it’s pretty silly.

Rivian’s software is overrated and over hyped. It’s the weakest aspect of my R1, not the best. Just because you replace buttons that control drive modes, suspension stiffness, ride height and seat settings (none of which are new concepts) with touchscreen does not mean you’ve built great software. It means you’ve replaced buttons with touch screen. Settings have been menu driven for decades. What matters is the features and functions. My Rivian still lacks countless features, functions and infotainment capabilities that are in my 20 year old sedan. And those worked perfectly on day 1. I didn’t have to wait for over the air updates. With many functions, the concept of the car getting better over time is ridiculous because it means Rivian didn’t get it right the first time.

7:06 Software controlled vents are the best, glad Rivian also chose to do that, when passengers or even worse kids mess with it it's so nice to adjust it centrally and save to profile compared to many older cars I owned. Cybertruck however has annoyingly loud Ventilation on "Auto Low" and I have to always override speed to 1 or 2 out of 10, which gets reset everytime you engage Dog Mode. I and many others reported that over and over - Tesla couldn't care less. Model 3 and Y are much quiter on HVAC Auto. Looks like Jordan is saying same with Rivian Medium Fan speed and I think on 8:30 it just switched to Medium after disengaging Pet Mode? Why both Rivian and Tesla do it uhh. I also would love Cybertruck to support seat heating and ventilation at the same time, I loved that in BMW and Porsche, you stay warm but not sweating in cold winter.
@artemZinn10 күн бұрын
9:04 I don't quite get how Rivian does it, but one annoying thing with Tesla rear HVAC and heated seats control is that if you have HVAC off but want to enable rear seat heating - you have to open Climate menu which instantly turns HVAC on for entire car. Yeah it may sound like a niche issue but when off-roading far away from chargers you want to manually control all energy use and it is annoying to cycle HVAC just to control rear seat heating.

10:50 Navigation: Tesla maps are quite snappy, but annoyingly there is no way to cache the map data, so even if Truck knows the entire route but loses internet connection which let's be frank - most of the US has no data service off major highways. Like I want that satelite view or at least vector data to be predownloaded into cache once I put destination in for entire route. 11:07 Jordan, why didn't you call out massive frame drop and lag when you scrolled results for "Coffee" and map changed zoom levels in the Rivian navigation? It was really bad, especially when driving.
@artemZinn10 күн бұрын
16:06 Navigation: Overall I must say the Rivian UI looks more thought through for navigation actions, due to Tesla lack of "instrument cluster" in most of their cars it's kind of hard to reach for the driver to manipulate destination points, reorder them, etc, Tesla UI also zooms in-out automatically very agressively so you might be picking a point on the map and bam - map moved on its own. In Tesla the configuration menu for the Navigation always feels like afterthought for years, it's a tiny menu that always looks odd and non-informative, in Rivian it felt more integrated into main UI.

Waze data. Sole reason for carplay other than integration with Siri. (tesla, this is stupid I can't long press the voice button and get siri)
@ST1300PA10 күн бұрын
I find that both Waze and Google maps do a better job at routing. Rivian's routing software will often map longer routes that end up using more energy. I always follow Google maps or Waze and let the truck adjust itself as it goes. This is one of the reasons I would love to have Android Auto/Carplay built-in. I use a 3rd-party screen to run AA which also enables me to listen to podcasts and use voice commands/transcriptions for text messages.

@ for me it’s cop detection 😂. But ya if it’s that bad I would too. Tesla doesn’t have that problem.

I wish Tesla had CarPlay so I can use Waze on the main screen. It doesn’t have to take over the whole screen, replace the map view with CarPlay when activated is all I’m asking for. People who say Tesla/Rivian should never have CarPlay as an option are morons. You have no idea what’s going to happen in the future. CarPlay updates with your phone. Imagine having CarPlay on a fisker ocean… it would make them going bankrupt not as tough as a pill to swallow. Old Teslas are starting to feel slow and laggy. I recently drove a MCU1 Tesla model S. the navigation takes 10 minutes to load when the car first turns on and then searching for a location takes 2 minutes. My iPhone would do it in 2 seconds. If Tesla had CarPlay it would make the experience better and make the cars more usable for longer. I get that Tesla has been updating cars for many years now, I have a model 3, but CarPlay is a great insurance policy

No matter how good they make these EVS, the general population doesn't want to pay $100,000 + for a cell phone on wheels that can't even go 325 miles on a single charge of real world range. And this is coming from an EV owner..

Come on, r1t can be configured at 100k+, but it starts at 70k and used quad large will be 50k today!
@daadreeb65829 күн бұрын
Yep. Going the wrong direction on price. As a pre order owner, no way I'd pay today's prices, especially knowing what I know about the car.
@koepretzel10 күн бұрын
Gen 1 Quad was the bargain to get. Gen 2 is just too expensive for few improvements with poor lease rates and high interest rates for financing. Gen 1 is already being quasi-obsolete and will likely just get infotainment upgrades going forward since they abandoned ADAS. R2 needs to come soon in order to save the company since most Gen 1 buyers won't upgrade and they're going to have issues selling enough $100k trucks despite the Tesla haters who want to switch. You'd be better off buying used Gen 1 and save a ton of money or wait for Gen 3-4 when prices will come down. Their atrocious service center experience is why they'll fail. Waiting months to get an appointment is so frustrating.

@miami386310 күн бұрын
Service Center is why they’ll fail? 😂 Rivian just secured billions in investments. Service Center waits isn’t exclusive to Rivian. Nor is it all Rivian’s. My local service center gets me in within 2 weeks. I’m not so confident they’ll “fail” because of their service centers.
@koepretzel10 күн бұрын
@@dianewallace6064 I have 2, '22 R1T and '23 R1S. Been to the service center a bunch of times with the R1S. Rattles, rear lift gate would catch on opening. Rivian paid body shop for interior frame dent from factory. HVAC issues on the R1T and both had their 12V batteries replaced which is the norm. Probably 7 times total in the service center. They even replaced the windshield they scratched while fixing the dash rattles.

I don’t have many months of wait time for service and I’m at a location that is stretched and new location is opening very soon.

But Wassym was on record a couple years ago stating the Gen 1 hardware was immensely powerful, would allow them to offer all promised features and future proofed .... Hmm, imagine that, he lied.
@rmkep10 күн бұрын
You start off saying you prefer the Rivian software to Tesla and then during demo find number of many awkward issues? For me it's simple, Supercharger network (with proper location of charge port) and FSD make Tesla the clear winner. I just yesterday purchased a new MY and FSD with AI4 and the 110 mile drive from San Francisco to my home east of Sacramento was flawless. Literally never touche the steering wheel with even though there was a lot of highway construction with speed reductions, complex intersections and even an emergency vehicle pull over on the 2 hour drive. I had been critical of FSD on my 2018 HW3 Model X but FSD on AI4 seems to have achieved next level over every other ADAS system. Eyes still need to be on the road while the few remaining edge cases (I encountered none) are resolved but my confidence and relaxation levels made that drive next level. I've driven Ford, Chevy and Rivian with ADAS and for driving around town or long distance drives no other manufacturer is even close.

1.49 mi/kWh = 671 Wh/mi = WOW is that inefficient. Holy cow does that prove the expression "nothing in life is free". I guess there is no way to have a larger vehicle, like a pickup truck, and hope for anything even remotely approaching reasonable efficiency.
@passionvoile165010 күн бұрын
My r1t is above 2mi/kwh. But still indeed not as efficient as smaller vehicle. Physics !

This video highlights a serious inability of car mfrs to understand what's best for consumers. While software controlled HVAC vent controls look cool and modern, they offer very little more than "coolness" and soft-saved vent positions. Almost no benefit, but too man serious downsides: 4x-10x cost (design, mfg, service), worse reliability, no backup if it fails, uses battery's energy, and system is much more complex (so chance of failure goes up tremendously, due to software bugs, hacking, hardware failures). This is just for the HVAC control, but the same applies to every part of the vehicle. Overall cost of vehicle goes up probably 50% higher if you add everything. Though for other features (like software controlled suspension), we get much better benefits so maybe it/other features are worth it. Back to software HVAC vents, cost is much higher, 4x to 10x higher (for each vent, you need another tiny CPU, CPU/control wiring, 2 motors/2-axis motor, and power/wiring for motors & CPU). Design, manufacturing, and service costs go up massively (manufacturing cost of mechanical hand-moved vent controls are $10-$30 per vent, electronic ones are $110-$200 per vent). Manual vents add $100-300 overall per vehicle. Electronic ones add $1000-$2000 overall, per vehicle. That's why Rivian left the rear vents manual. It's just not worth it. Reliability is much worse, because if any of 10 parts per vent fail, the entire vent becomes useless (since it's impossible to manually control). Over the life of the vehicle, with 6-8 vents, at least one will completely stop working. Repair costs will top $1000 for that one vent. The alternative: hand-moved mechanical vents don't fail. If it does (in 30 years, IF you had that old of a car), it'll cost $200-$300 to repair. That's why Rivian left manual rear vents, as emergency backup if the front ones ALL fail (entire system can fail from 1 component). Electronic vents use the car's battery/energy. Mechanical vents use your hand's energy. They use energy even when you're not re-positioning any vent (since the electronics, CPU, motor use a tiny bit every second the car's on, for every vent in the car). Its complexity massively increases the risk of failure and problems due to bugs, hacking, & hardware faults. OTA systems can be hacked. Wireless (cellular or near-field) controlled systems are much more hackable. Software bugs can reduce the life of components, causing failures. Mechanical vents are so easy to use, manufacture, and replace, so car companies are bilking consumers for an "oh, that's cool" but mostly useless feature. They add $1000+ to vehicle price, and maybe $2000 in future repairs.
