I know, it's so unfair. Loved every episode and the actress really nails the character. She really stands out in relation to Marvel's other superheroes, since even though she has no superpowers - she kicks butt(!), is smart, feminine, and compassionate. Also, it's one of the few shows where I really like the supporting cast too. And the "Russian spy" actress was amazing in her role - would have loved to have seen more of both of them together. :(

There's a stigma (still is) when women of a certain age are still living alone, unwed. Spinsters are typically women of a particular age group (30-40) who are far beyond their prime age and have never been married and are (commonly stereotype as not having suitors due to their now older age) less likely to ever marry. So one would probably associate them with wearing unfashionable shoes such as a kitten heel, for comfort. An independent woman is regarded as someone who chooses to not marry. Someone typically still in their prime (20s, mid 20s, late 20s) who has a strong sense of who she is and may have many suitors but chooses not to settle down. These types are strong willed, independent and usually still retain a fashion sense and are less likely to wear the kitten heels but opt for the high heels or something in that stylistic range. Hence, must be the shoes.
