This a very good questions that boaters ask themselves a lot. Do i need a higher prop? Stay with the same? or go lower? Will this video will help you decide based on how you use your boat. Lower pitch is for heavy loads and trolling. Higher pitch is for top speed and lighter boats.

Sorry Sunshine, but diameter is the measurement straight across the prop. Not the circumference which is around the outside. I couldn't imagine the circumference to be 8 1/2 inches around the outside.

I just saw this i have a yamaha 8hp 4 Stroke outboard on my 12ft v i Think my pitch is 8.5 in my prop i put a deck on the boat it seems pretty slow do you know if they make a 9.5 pitch prop mine i think has 7 splines i need alittle better spend or maybe like a 20hp id rather spend less money so id like to try a different prop First anyway thanks good video

had to put on new prop today lost 5mph and its going to suck more gas may have to get the old prop fixed it was way better.

Great video, will it plane with two people on any of the props? Ive got a 2017 merc 9.9 with a 6.5 and 8.5 pitch props and want to get a 14 jon. Ill be fishing with two at all times.

Hi i have an old mercury 9.8 on a 10 foot sib and i am changing from a 8x8 stock prop to a 9x8.5 because the stock is not available and apparently it can be bad for the rpms?

If the pitch is too high your rpm will climb as high. 1 pitch over stock is no big deal. It only pertains when you go like 3+ pitch

It all depends on what boat you have, Mercury doesn’t know what type of boat you’re gonna put the outboard on, usually on the low horsepower engines RPM doesn’t come into play, but you want to stay in the recommended RPM range for your outboard. in the 50hp and above range you can hit the rev limiter. Also LOWER pitch gives you HIGHER RPM.

@@mr.andersen1505 I have a suzuki 6hp + 270 inflatable boat with stock propeller 7 1/2 x 7 it goes 13knots with 1 personand 5.5knots with 2 people. Do you think if i use a smaller pitch , would it help to go any faster than 5.5knots (10kmph)?

@@boatsandoutboards9070 it might, but with so low horsepower it’s much harder to tell the difference when you change ur pitch, also if you go to low on pitch you might over-Rev your outboard so be careful. If it’s just a hunch that ur pitch is too high don’t swap until you need to because of wear or ding on ur old prop

@@mr.andersen1505 thanks, with 2 people onboard, it is a hunch in fact. A 9.9hp planes with 3 people, but a 6hp doesn't with 2 people. It is just on the edge.

ok I just need one that does it all or get close to. as soon as I get my boat set up i'm the only one that will be going out I don't know anyone that likes to do fishing camping etc so Im going to need just one can't afford 3 anyways lol I have a 1961 evinrude fastwin 18hp

You may not need 3 but must have 2. You can hit some thing and a spare prop will save the day
