This is a fact for large areas of the country where cars simply don't and won't last. Harsh winters with salted roads will destroy a car no matter how well you try to maintain it. They're starting to make it so you can't even repair older cars anymore. Lack of parts or long part delays, lack of shops that service older vehicles, etc. It would be best to learn to make repairs yourself where possible and maybe have multiple older and paid off vehicles. My 2017 Mazda 3 has an air cabin filter that clips into place with plasic clips and it takes 30 seconds to replace. On our 2023 Chevrolet Equinox, the air cabin filter is a plasic piece that SCREWS in and I had to purchase a $30 unique wrench at Autozone to replace it. Many of us are victims of situation. I know I was. But the key is did you go for the 80k car or the 13k car? That is the diff. Also, I know a car dealer. He says 60% of people don't have money when they get a new car. They won't have money for a mechanic to look at it or even a down payment.

The real thing we should be talking about is why can’t we have more reliable public transportation in America. When I lived in Japan I saved so much money by not owning a car. After moving back I’ve sunk thousands of dollars in my car even with it paid in full.

It's simple, different things are valuable to different people, and the person who made this video clearly doesn't put value into vehicles. I've loved vehicles my entire life, and while I'd never put myself into a financial hardship to own any car, what I drive is very important to me. Car enthusiasts have a saying, "if you don't look back at your car when you get out of it, you bought the wrong car...."

They should ask the amount and for how many months was the loan for, not just the amount. Someone can have a high car payment, but if their loan term is 36 months, it's not bad as opposed to someone who has an 84-month loan, which can be financial suicide .

Something like 90% of America necessitates a car. Most families 2 cars. Driving and car ownership has become entrenched in the American lifestyle. It quite literally is part of Americana. The current economics and economy of car ownership is debt. Very few people can walk to a dealership and buy a new or newer pre-owned vehicle absent taking on debt. Just like everything else, the banks, dealerships and manufacturers have figured out how to turn this part of our culture against us. Prices are simply out of control.

My recommendation for an affordable car is a Toyota Corolla or Prius that are very reliable and have good longevity. Plus there very fuel efficient. I had a 2018 Toyota Prius and bought it with 120,000 miles and that thing just would not break and it recently got totaled at 165,000 miles. Also you’re paying more on the car with interest than just the principal on the loan. The $55k car for that BMW is more like $75k with interest payments.

I leased a new Civic in 2013 because I desperately needed a car and knew the GM of the dealership. MSRP was $20k. At the end of the 36 month lease, I decided to buy it for $12k. I did finance it but the payments and interest rate were low. Paid it off a few years ago. Still have it. Never had to worry about how it was maintained or treated when it was new, because it had 20 miles on it when I drove it home. About to hit 124k now, never had any major issues, and still super reliable with great fuel efficiency. I love my Honda and don't care that it's old. It's all mine and that's more important to me.

I bought my first new car ever when I retired, a 2022 Chrysler 300. It was the mid grade model with the comfort package and was $40,072 including tax. I wrote a check for the car and they were mad because they quoted me the price assuming I was financing the car. My net worth is around 3 Million. I basically drove good used cars all my life and invested 20% of what I earned my working career. I went on vacations, bought things I really wanted (i.e. Guitars) and lived comfortably. It can be done, it just takes discipline. I retired at 62. Now I am enjoying a very comfortable retirement with my military pension, my social security, my wifes social security and investment income.

Now have a $500 car payment but plan to pay off early and drive this vehicle into the ground as well, hopefully for the next 10-15+ years😅

My last car payment was $212 per month, but I paid it off back in 2022 and am still driving that car. I had to buy two new tires for it recently, which cost me about $260 (and I paid in cash), and replaced a headlight fixture (around $115, had to use credit for that one since I bought it online, but it's paid off now); but that's about it when it comes to repairs so far. Unless this car just completely craps out on me, then I see zero reason to put myself under the burden of a car payment again.
