Outrider 21 - Quiet Quitting your PhD

Quiet Quitting - or silent quitting - is a characteristic of the post-pandemic workplace. But Quiet Quitting remains a major challenge in the PhD. Students are enrolled and not progressing. Or - students are spending much of their 'enrolment' on a Leave of Absence. How do we stop Quiet Quitting and finish that (damn) thesis? Or - indeed - exit the programme?

I feel like I am in this boat at the moment. I broke my back and became a paraplegic in May 2023, and I have been on a leave of absence from my PhD since as I have been in hospital for 4 months, and now doing outpatient therapy. I am not sure when I will be able to pick it up again as my time is taken up with rehab therapy learning to walk again, and doesn't leave much room for anything else. Hopefully I will be able to pick it up again in 2024.

Awwww dang it, I've been quasi-called out at 2:15 AM 😅 😢 but my stagnation wasn't anticipated -- I didn't expect the "quiet quitting" of others & I got burned out. In my period of "reestablishing boundaries" during the summer... the quiet quitters were on legit vacation/ went MIA! 🤯 I'm not sure which group I'm in right now, but I do know I am in recovery from burnout. However, I have decided that if I don't qualify at the end of this year, I'll quit-quit. If I'm gonna experience the same burnout I did in my pre-doctoral career, I'd rather do so with a much larger paycheck & with a life outside academia.
