In this Outshined guitar lesson video, I will show you how to play Kim Thayil's guitar parts for this hard rock classic from Soundgarden note-for-note.
They used Drop "D" tuning on the original recording (DADGBE) so that is what I will be using in this lesson as well.
"Outshined" has so many killer riffs and is so fun to play I think just about any lover of rock/hard rock music will love this one.
The opening riff/verse is based around some basic power chords in a very laid back feel. Pretty simple to play, just make sure you use a hefty amount of palm muting to give it that crunch.
From there we are introduced to the pre-chorus which is a very unique riff that on it's own sounds like it goes out of tune. However, with the bass line added it just sounds like a very cool and very original guitar riff.
Then then chorus hits with just a ton of power and an awesome groove. That chorus really got me when this song originally came out on MTV decades ago.
This is followed by Kim Thayil's solo which contains some cool blues style playing but doesn't get overly difficult.
Later in the song there is a little musical interlude played by Thayil that moves around quite a bit and needs to be played with the right fingering to make it easy on the hands. Man small hands don't help. But I've been doing your hand stretches and my fingers are spreading out. I lost my speech to cancer back in 2014..I am a singer by trade...but God saved me from dying and is restoring my speech...he's so cool. But I promised him I would play guitar at all new levels for saving me from dying. My Athiest doctors are like wow no body talks like this after this type of cancer...it has to be God. I'm like God loves us a lot. He told me on my death bed, not to say I have cancer and to speak I survived it. Chemo damaged my liver and I prayed and within a week God restored it...doctors again were like wow...your God is amazing! Thx for the lessons Carl!! I will donate in the near future. 8 yrs cancer free!

You're are about the only one that does the pre-chorus correctly. But when you were talking about what the bass does during is right too. It sounds best when played together in a band. It sounds funky when it's not. But great lesson.

"doesn't sound pleasing to the ear, but he does it every time" ... well, honestly.. "pleasing to the ear" is merely personal perspective. If your ears are tuned to the obscure scales, it sounds most excellent, dude! :) It's a battle between good taste and commonly played chords/riffs/licks. Kim Thayil and Chris Cornell had good taste, and thought outside the box. I guess that was back in a time when you could get on the radio without having to use basic chords or common riffs. lol
