So fun fact: The PS3 version of Arkham let you play as the Joker as well in his own versions of the challenges, including it's own mini-story as well as chances to fight Cash and Commissioner Gordon in the combat challenges. I also love the fact Vergil matches Dante in multiple games using only ONE style against Dante's 4 (or more in some cases). Dante is so badass that he's a master of none but has no real weakness, Vergil is THE master of one but is so damn good at it he overcomes his weaknesses. The Sparda brothers are terrifying, no wonder Mundus was fearful of them.

Though Cynder has a terrifying reputation, she's a pretty easy boss fight when you take her on yourself in a New Beginning, but take control of her two games later in Dawn of the Dragon, and she's so OP that even shield enemies that Spyro can't seem to overcome with his elemental powers on full blast can be surmounted by Cynder in one low-cost stunlocking move. Once she's on our side, she's terrifying enough that we could just let her fight the war all by herself.

In Breath of Fire 4, not only do you play part of the game as the person you end up facing at the end of the game (who is so much more powerful than you that he can solo most fights without any danger of losing), but one of the choices you make just before that fight has you merge with him and fight your former allies.

Honestly? Part of me wants to list Yukari Yakumo from the Touhou series on here. She is introduced in the seventh mainline game of the series as enigmatic, a mastermind who'd rather just sleep in all the time, the most powerful youkai in the world (more than Yuuka Kazami, whom is also terrifying and playable in a couple games after fighting her), and able to manipulate any boundary is a way she can think of or desire. Within her gaps she opens to get to and from anywhere is an eldritch horror. So? In TH7, if you choose Reimu as your playable character, Yukari tags along so you can swap to and from her. But it doesn't end there. In a couple fighting games in the series, you can fight against Yukari and her eldritch powers, and have the occasional train thrown at you, or you can play as Yukari with those same powers, train-throwing included. Mind the gaps. Otherwise, yes, I'd also say Yuuka Kazami is a good contender. Eldritch powers and barrier manipulation? No. Raw strength, a house of demons, a seemingly sadistic sense of humor people remember more than her good manners, and a love and defense of flowers that would make even a certain BotW character think is a bit much? Well, Yuuka is playable in TH 5 and 9. Both characters love carrying around parasols, too. It's a fun coincidence, surely.

In the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for World of Warcraft, I seem to remember that there were lore quests where you got to see climatic battles in the past, and got the chance to play as both Illidan from Burning Crusade and as the newest BBEG Arthas, laying waste to wide swaths of enemies. I also remember doing one where you infiltrate Undercity, and Jaina giga-charges all your skills and stats so that you can single-handedly tear through the normally raid-level armies of opposition in your way like tissue paper.

honestly Ardyn is probably one of the best FF villains by far, dont think the main game really delves into his backstory though so you dont really get any hint to his motivation unless you play the DLC or watch the short anime they put on KZbin. to sum it up he sacrificed his own health to cure his people of the star scourge and ended up getting screwed over by his own brother and the god and was erased from history and imprisoned for 2 thousand years before being freed from his island prison by the Niflheim Empire, all round a pretty valid reason to want to get revenge

Also, Bahamut used him as a pawn because, being the god of war, he wanted Ardyn to mess things up for him for laughs. Ardyn wanted to die after his betrayal and Bahamut said "No, I need you for a thing in 2,000 years". His fight at the end not being anything of the spectacular, god-mode caliber that you normally see of a endgame FF boss just shows how tired of it all that he is.

General Avlora from Triangle Strategy perhaps? She's one of the more difficult bosses in the game, having high hp, attack, and defense, and in addition, she fills the Dark Knight archetype, so she just gets nastier as she gets hurt. Plus during chapter 14, if you fight her in the gardens she also gets her ultimate, Bloody Cross. But if you do the Golden Route, she ends up defecting and joining your team, and even though she's been nerfed from how she is as a boss, she still is one of the strongest units in the game. And while Bloody Cross is terrifying when used against you, it feels hecking awesome to use it against enemies.

Wow, I’m surprised that out of all the times you take control of the boss in the Arkham series you went with Joker in Origins. There was also Joker in Asylum and Deathstroke in Origins

That was a bit surprising. I expected Deathstroke. Then again, both Deathstroke and Asylum Joker are DLC or exclusive bonuses, while Joker in Origins is in the main campaign, so he's easier to feature and more people will have experienced his rampage

Dunno if he counts as a *Boss* per se, but getting to control Beastmode Bendy at the end of Bendy and the Dark Revival was pretty cathartic. It was really more of a plot wrap-up and curtain call for the supporting characters, but still enjoyable to rampage around

I think DJ Octavio was a good boss from Splatoon 1 and 2, but in the final boss of Splatoon 3, you actually get to steer his mech to beat up a Giant Bear.

Handsome Jack from the Borderlands franchise. You have to deal with him at the end of BL2, but get to play as his Body Double in BL-TPS. Also, you're *helping* him become the antihero he is in BL-TPS. Slightly stretching the confines of this video, but I think it fits

Venom from Marvel's Spider-Man 2....Ngl, that caught me completely by surprise..... First you wreck through the inside of Oscorp, and then just after you are comfortable with the controls, it puts you into a boss fight, as the literal boss

Metal Gear Solid 4 when you get to actually pilot Metal Gear Rex for a brief time, I think that counts and should be on a future list. Playing as the husk of the giant robot that you had to destroy in the first game is terrifying, satisfying and awesome.

There was a glitch in the selection menu in Melee where you could play as master hand. My friends and I almost got it to work one day but we were never right on with the button sequence. You had to do something with the B and A buttons in the menu and player 3 would be master hand if you did it right. Ours froze for a few seconds but it failed
