In the old days you usually did not post letters in a separate envelope (paper was expensive, so it would have been an extravagance to sacrifice a perfectly good sheet just to wrap up another sheet of paper). So, you had to fold up the letter you wrote in such a way to conceal the contents and the back of the paper became the 'envelope' itself. A bone folder was the tool you needed to make those sharp, straight creases.

I'm not certain of this, but paper became much cheaper as time went by and they began making paper from wood pulp instead of cloth pulp... ...yep, in the old days they would reduce old rags to pulp and make paper out of it. The rosin they used to sprinkle over writing paper was to tighten up the surface fibers for the pen to run smoothly over (otherwise it would have been like trying to write a letter out on a T-shirt-- the surface has too much 'give'). This also made paper rather expensive. When the forests of America were exploited in the expanding country, being able to make paper from wood was cheap and easy. All of a sudden you could use an extra sheet to serve as an envelope.

@@scottlil01 I studied at an institute for music for a while whilst also doing a basic music production course on the side, whilst ALSO recording with a band in a studio every fortnight on a Sunday for a few months. That period of my life practically ruined music for me. My head strips any song I hear down to every basic fundamental at this point. Because I know almost every aspect that goes into making it. Except for what inspired it, of course. Kinda one of the suckier aspects of studying something for so long that isn’t a STEM. It ruins it a little bit.

If they then die again quickly, the game just ends without a winner.
