@@coyoteartist I have some knowledge in the subject Andy is talking about but I don't believe I have enough expertise to judge if Andy's criticism is warranted or not - he's certainly put more thought into it then even Luke himself has (and Ellen too) and I love him for his bookish personhood. I'm a troglodyte who had to refresh himself on the meaning erudite so instead of spending hours to improve my understanding - and even then I will never feel certain about self-taught subjects - I'd rather assume Andy is pulling about 15~30% of his art criticism out of his butt and playing the joker. But it works because in my understanding he's >50% using actual concepts and themes and it's hard to distinguish if he is playing the art critic or if he is playing at parodying the art critic. Either ways, I enjoy his performance and share in the especially difficult Pikachu art dilemma this year :) I liked Ellen's approach but as Andy said, Luke's artistic sense, though uncommon, pushes at the boundary of simple, aesthetically pleasing "art". But see, I'd prefer to run around as Ellen's Pikachu rather than Luke.

Okay, see, I think they both had different ideas pop into their heads when they decided upon "cosplaying." Ellen dressed up like a fan going to a convention, and looked amazing for what she had to work with. Luke dressed like he was in competition at the convention, going for structural elements and making a literal Pikachu, and pulled it off well. (I'd have gone for black full length gloves to hide the arms and draw more heavily from the Noh theater inspiration, but that's just me.) That being said, I'd have gone for Ellen's in a heartbeat because the "essence of Pikachu" to me is that infectious cuteness that makes it so loved. Ellen had that; Luke was that thing I dreamt up last night after I ate too much cheese for dinner.

Aww, Andy, you are loved and appreciated, promise. It was an *incredibly* difficult challenge to judge because each entry tackled the prompt with a different method ("cosplay as pikachu" vs "create the illusion of pikachu"), and I admire that you rewarded the artist who took more risks. (Plus I found it *so* satisfying that you quickly figured out what the tights and shoes were meant to be.) Both of them were stellar interpretations of pikachu in different ways, and honestly I would *not* have been able to choose which one is better. Also, major shout out to Jon for those fashion shoots, you showcased each design marvelously

Ellen! As someone who doesn't have a switch and thus doesn't have animal crossing, I have no clue if it's possible but using the mask to make Pikachu's cheeks, mouth, and nose, would be a brilliant way to go. I love what you've got there from where I am in the video, I just hope that it's enough to finally, *finally* convince Andy that you know what you're doing with Pikachu renditions. EDIT: I honestly would have given it to Ellen, because it was about cosplaying Pikachu and not about capturing a picture essence, but that's because of how I interpreted the rules and the spirit of the challenge. Luke's was… somewhat nightmare inducing but I loved the touch of the highlights.

Definitely something relativistic going on, what with Rudolph's famously dopper-shifted red nose and his need to visit every house on Earth in just 24 hours. Fun fact: Santa's actually powered by the Hawking radiation of microscopic black holes converting matter into energy. He prefers liquid mercury to milk, and lead flakes to chocolate chips, because he's only using the cookies, milk, and carrots/depleted uranium rods for their mass (which is also why he neither gets even more obese nor leaves Santa-droppings in everyone's chimneys).

I always root for Ellen in the pikachu challenge, but this year I really don't mind that Luke won. I didn't think the arms and legs would work but they really did - I do wish he'd gone with black and white pikachu though, because original pikachu was more chubby than the current one and it looked really cool. I do agree that the face was a nightmare though xD
