Jack, I was going to write the same thing. Plus, no telling what he's been doing in the 20 years during the outbreak. Reed, I'd agree that hitting a man-sized target under 100 yards with a magnified optic should be a cakewalk for anyone moderately proficient. But then again, I regularly see shooters unable to hit paper at 100 yards from a rest or altogether chambering the wrong caliber cartridge in their firearm. @SerathDarklands4 жыл бұрын
The craziest part is that most of the time, snipers will work in pairs - a spotter and a shooter - and you almost never see that in games. The spotter will do the work of calculating the distance to the target, tracking wind direction and velocity, that sort of thing, and will relay necessary adjustments to the shooter. This two-person system also makes it a lot easier for the team to survive if an enemy combatant sneaks up on them, because while the shooter has to drop this big, cumbersome rifle to pull their sidearm, all the spotter has is binoculars and other sighting gear, and will usually have an assault rifle within easy reach. It's incredible how rarely you see the two-man team portrayed in video games, and I get it, you usually are playing as the 'one man army' where it's just you, but without a spotter, you're almost certainly going to miss your first shot and give away your position.
@the-thhorseman24844 жыл бұрын
Once you take away bullet drop, and wind(like 99% of games) making distance irrelevant , a spotter would really have nothing to do.

Ah no can't have been the three ways to play, I distinctly remember them discussing the shot beforehand, and they film three-ways separately. And I never played dishonored, so I can't tell you what map it was, or if it was even the first game. But you were on a building opposite the mansion of the target and he was outside on the balcony as a teaser for the player, because there's NO WAY you can get him from that distance with the flimsy pistol you've got. I've been through years of shooting training, & even getting a first round hit on a 30-50m paper target from prone is challenging for first-timers even with a light scope. Shooting offhand/standing adds in a lot more misses, even for those shooting for a while. Adding in winds & moving targets that are actual people is a whole other world of preparedness. Of course it's steady in the sequels: by that point, it doesn't matter if you're Femshep or Manshep, you're Super Shep! Like u can’t increase ur gun skills, u can’t really improve anything except ur own special moves, u can’t change as much, there’s not as much weapon variety, armor variety’s not terrible but the idea that I’m stuck in medium armor bugs me.
@Veladus4 жыл бұрын
No, the step back made PERFECT sense lorewise. It was explained that the geth used expendable clips and showed a major hole in organic races' tactics. Studies showed that, other factors being equal, the team that won was the team that could fire the most rounds in the shortest period of time. So waiting for guns to cool down was getting people killed. Expendable clips fixed this issue and let organics fight on even terms. That's the canon explanation, and it makes perfect sense. What doesn't make perfect sense are expendable clips in places like Jacob's "I'm the only black guy, my loyalty mission is to find my dad" mission or how the few old school non-expendable guns like the M-7 Lancer were awesome despite being canonically shitty designs. "rather than the heat sinks previously deployed for all species (including the Reapers)" You might wanna lay off the sauce if you think you fought Reapers using sidearms in Mass Effect 1. There's only 1 Reaper in that game, and it was firing giant goddamn globs of molten metal to one-shot Alliance ships.

"No need for headshots, if the reticle is anywhere on a hunter, they're going down for good." Most games have conditioned people to think it takes multiple rounds to put someone down. TLoU is supposed to be a more grounded game. Let's assume Joel is using a .308 in that sequence, safe assumption as it's the most widely used cartridge in the world so ammo stocks would be the most available, even after 20 years. Judging by the size, the hunting rifle you carry with you is likely a .223. Depending on difficulty level, you can one-shot enemies with the hunting rifle without needing a headshot, and I think it's safe to say the suburbs mounted rifle is more powerful. A torso hit with a full-power rifle round at that range is almost a guaranteed incapacitation ( maybe not insta-kill, but the bad guy would be on the ground ). Limb hits would be insta-cripple ( with a decent chance of rupturing the brachial or femoral artery ) so pretty close to incapacitated. Assuming Joel has good firearm skills ( and, well, he's a blue-collar Texan ), hitting a man-sized target under 100 yards with a scoped rifle on a tripod is almost a gimme.

When I did the mission in RDR2 with Lenny, where we had to clear out Shady Bell from the Lemoyne Raiders, I sniped the whole way through it from the gate. One of the enemies even ran straight to me and I shot him in close range, hitting him. I felt like such a badass! :D I recorded that mission luckily to relive that glorious moment everyday.

"The bow requires good upper body strength." I think you're one of the first pure gamers I've seen get that right! So many are tied up in the myth introduced by D&D that the bow requires "dexterity" to use properly. Yeah, like a weeny with 5 Str and 15 Dex would be physically capable of pulling back a 100+ lb war bow. I love D&D but that rule's rather dumb once you learn a little bit about archery from those who have actually shot a bow before.
@ajmwolf4 жыл бұрын
IIRC correctly, they did adjust the bows damage if your STR was especially bad, but you didn't get the bonus for a high STR for the same damage, so on a 5 STR, you would have... -3? -4? I think? So the "war bow" in this case (with a base damage of 1d10) would do 1d10-4 damage, but do a minimum of 1. The DEX use of a bow is more the ability to aim, rather than the damage. Unless you used specially made (Read: Custom/compound) bows, you didn't get any damage bonuses using said bow.
@Seriously_Unserious4 жыл бұрын
@@ajmwolf Still, I recommend you watch some channels that have real archers on them. I know Tod's Workshop's had guest archers on there for various tests, one of which was testing the style of lownbow the English were using at the battle of Agincourt against a recreation of the type of armor the French knights would have been using to see if the stories were true, that arrows shot from a longbow really could punch through plate armor. I highly recommend checking that one out. Shadiversity also has some videos on archery, including ones where he's actually shooting his own bows, and he also mentions several other channels from time to time who are really good for medieval archery content.

I've watched many Archery videos, Shad's included. It's good stuff. :) I was specifically talking in d&d terms, not IRL.

@@ajmwolf ah. Still, the AD&D rules I've been exposed to, Str had no bearing on ability to shoot a bow. No way to be accurate no matter now nimble you are if you can't even draw the bow, so to me it would make sense to have the higher damage/range bows have a minimum Str requirement just to even use it. Were I to DM a campaign, I'd have a house rule in that regard I'd personally add in.

Considering that most games ignore air resistance, gravity, wind, and the required math skills to do the math required when all you have is a pencil and some paper, it's actually pretty easy, just put the dot on the enemy's head and push the shoot button. Nice cameo by Rob from PS Access.

"It's probably the only special forces job where you get to lie down a lot" *Laughs in standard military* And to be fair, most these situations aren't that bad. So long as you know where the rifle's scope is zeroed in and how each increment works on said scope, all the games really do is take bullet drop out of the equation.
@obsolete184 жыл бұрын
They also tend to remove bullet travel time. But in some of the clips such as in last of us a pretty new shooter could easily land those shots on a mounted scoped rifle
@mitchellmitting66784 жыл бұрын
@@obsolete18 Yeah true, but in a lot of video game scenarios, bullet travel time isn't a factor worth accounting for. I mean, some games, like Battlefield, do it and it makes sense considering the scale of the engagement, but a lot of the cases here just don't have enough distance to really matter to include that complication
@obsolete184 жыл бұрын
Mitchell Mitting true but it definitely makes things like sniping a quick sprinting enemy much easier when you just aim center mass as apposed to slightly in front of them. When you don’t need to make a split second calculation adjusting for both bullet drop and time of travel you’ve removed every part of sniping that has any level of difficulty
@mitchellmitting66784 жыл бұрын
@@obsolete18 Oh certainly, it's just for ease as well as making game play simpler on a technical level, however I gotta say, it is really frustrating when devs make a game where it is a minor factor just enough that it will never be noticed until a point where you'l question why they aren't dead when your shooting at a semi moderate distance. One Idea for a cameo is OXtra/OXbox list (possible close to Xmas) they make fun of Solid/Naked Snake, the lights go out, then back up and Rob is behind the chair as Christmas Snake with a stern look on his face. Like wise Rob could do a list video and make fun of Link or Legend of Zelda in general and it cuts to Rob on the chair with Ellen and Luke in the background dressed as Link. Admittedly it would take some scheduling but that would be awesome to see.

Another out-of-place sniping section is in Future Wars by Delphine Software. It’s a point and click adventure like Space Quest, and you start as a window washer, but at one point you need to hunker behind a rock and snipe enemies guarding a spacecraft. There’s a fourth-wall break as the protagonist tells the you the player, to click on enemies with the mouse , then catches himself “click? Mouse? What am I talking about?!”
@MichaelWarman4 жыл бұрын
In Rage sniping is so easy that the scope doesn't even have to be linked to the gun; early on you're given a revolver, and later on you get the "monocular", half a broken pair of binoculars, which you can use to survey ahead but will also display a crosshair when used with the revolver, allowing you to snipe hilariously long range targets with your pistol despite the monocular being held up to your face with one hand and the gun pointed unrelatedly with the other, meaning there's no reason whatsoever for your bullets to go where you're looking. They still do, of course, because video game sniping.

Want to have some clue of what being a sniper can sometimes be like? Spend 3 or 4 days traveling through miles of jungle to specific spot, being sure not to break any branches, crush any vegetation, or leave any tracks. Then dig a shallow scrape trench, erect a 'tent' above you, then stay there for a week making meticulous notes of everything you see. Then spend 4 days exfiltrating to celebrate a job well done.
