I LOVE onions. Today I took two medium sweet onions and diced them up small. Then I threw in a stick of butter to melt and the onions to cook sauteed but not mushy. While that is cooking, I take six packs of Buddig beef and open them. I stack them up and slice that stack in half. Then I cut the beef into nice pieces, about six cuts per stack. You don't want them too small since you want something to chew. Once the onions are done I throw in the beef and stir it around on medium heat so the beef gets toasted a bit. Then I add a large spoon of starch and stir it around. Then I add about 5 cups of milk and a pint of heavy whipping cream. I turn the heat up so it starts boiling. I stand there and stir it for about five minutes. Once it's off the heat it will thicken up yet stay really hot. I put my creamed chipped beef over toast or over mashed potatoes. It's comfort food. One year I planted 50 vidalia onion sets. That didn't last long and the next year I planted 100. They turned out great.

When the tops go down, they are starting to ripe / dry and are getting ready to be harvested. I can remember that my father used to bent over the tops to get them dry out quicker.

The soil is really nice to pull the onions. If you leave the Down onions too long before curing they may not store as well. You’re selling them it’s not as important 😊 As with Garlic if you let the stay in too long they start splitting the bulbs.😊 Xena Patch looking fantastic, hope your selling butch’s of flowers 💐

When the tops of the onions fall over the onions are pretty much done growing.
@munchkin5674
@munchkin5674 Ай бұрын
Yes! The onion stems gets soft and bends over right at the spot, signaling that it is done growing. If they know it won’t rain for a few days, they could pull all of those that are laying over and leave them laying for a day or two to start the drying process. Then gather them up and get them back to the barn to lay them out in a protected airy place for the stems to dry, as well as the outer layers of the onion bulb. When the stems get really dry, including inside the stems, then it is safer to cut the stem off 1-2” above the bulb, if you are curing them for storage onions. I would not keep those onions in those crates too long as the stems are still green and full of moisture, and with the humidity there, some of those onions could possibly start to mold or rot. Lets hope all of this days harvest sells fast and well! : )

Do you have a co-op that might invest in a rock picker to be used by their members to collect those rocks. What was planted in the onion field in the previous year? It might reveal 🤔 the reason for the under performance of your pesky weeds😂😂😂😅

I finally got a rough estimate of the cost of having a stone crusher come into a field and reduce all the stones to something no bigger than an inch, most of it being smaller, as small as sand. The issue I had not thought about it the potential change to the soil chemistry. If you have high calcium stones you could reduce any acidity to near zero. You would need to talk to a soil expert to know what would be. The estimated cost for crushing the field is between $1200 to $2000 per acre. I did not ask the width of the crusher. It is powered by a 515 horsepower Fendt tractor. I will call in with the details if you want to talk to him about a more accurate quote. Reply to this to let me know. I will say, I am more likely to use a stone burier tiller because I do not have as many stones as your farm. I do not know if that is an option you could try. Good Luck

Regarding the video where you mention the damage caused by raccoons, etc. Have you thought about traps - live or otherwise? Or motion sensors emitting sounds like a dog barking, etc? If cost is a factor but you are still interested in them I'll buy the first one and ship it to you. It sounds like you're losing a sizable quantity of corn. Live trapping means you'd have to take the animal far away so it won't return. Let another farmer deal with the pest. Birds. I've watched a fruit and vegetable farmer on KZbin use two-foot-in-diameter balloons to scare away birds from corn. A tall stake with a balloon attached to the top of the stake with string. The movement of the balloon scares the birds away. Or so the theory goes.

@beardedcreations Ай бұрын
One of the only things I suggest is that you get a giant flock of chickens and a few pigs. They will eat all the wasted tomatoes, peppers and other veggies that the crows, deer, and bugs get to. Also all of the leaves chopped from the broccoli, cabbage, brussels, kohlrabi, collards, and kale. You would have more than enough farm fresh eggs to keep your farm market stocked with your eggs and also have plenty of pork for your family. I know time is money but even allowing a local animal farm to come through and collect all the waste would help keep the unwanted pests down as well. Just a thought, it kills me watching all the veg go to waste.
