This will hopefully prepare you for the harsh world of Aurai. Don't get discouraged if you die a lot in Outward, because remember, you can't really die. The first steps of 'git gud'.

So a note on max stamina reduction - it isn't actually directly tied to how long you've been awake. It actually has to do with the usage of stamina. The more you use stamina, the faster the maximum drops. If you just walk around and don't fight, your max stamina will not change. On the flip side, even if you've only been awake for a few minutes, if you start dodge rolling all over the place and swinging at the air you can deplete your max stamina in no time at all, as I discovered while fruitlessly trying to find your second secret item in the starting town :P. Max health works the same way - if you aren't injured it will stay full, but as you take damage and heal up your max health will reduce. Of course there are multiple ways to restore the maximums, the most obvious being sleep but I've seen some food that can do it too. This is actually mentioned in a loading screen tip, though the wording is such that even if you see that tip it might not be obvious this is what they mean. I bring this up because a good tip for new players is don't run everywhere you go even if you are in a safe area because doing so depletes your max stamina. Try to only use stamina when you actually need it and your max will stay higher much longer. Should also note that Mana works in exactly the opposite way. Your Max Mana INCREASES the more you use Mana (cast spells), but decreases when you sleep.

@Asger Maar Potions, food (sea food in particular), a buff you get that regenerates it if you get super tired from lack of sleep, and a skill you can learn from a trainer that gives mana regen (requires one of your 3 breakthrough points though). That's just what I hear, I haven't got Mana myself, I just read about how it works.

I feel like 50% of time I’m just trading hits. And there’s nothing I can do to change that, since you have to swing multiple times to cause stagger. The only weapon that feels somewhat good is the spear. I can easily punish enemies and the chances of trading hits is much lower. Also, I’ve beaten dark souls, bloodborne, and sekiro so I’m used to this type of combat. However, Outward is just so janky and it relies more on gear, potions, skills, and buffs/debuffs than actual player skill. Not to mention game breaking bugs... Sad. Edit: I just got this game on pc a couple weeks ago and it is 100x better. Graphics are better and a lot less buggy with no crashes. Not to mention mods. I still agree with my old comment tho, the combat leaves much to be desired and relies too heavily on having the right set up. Which is fine if you like traditional rpgs. Still amazing and would definitely recommended.

I think the enemies moveset is what does that. The openings arent clear and attacks arent telepgraphed enough. Hit detections is fine most of the time and game is responsive. But i think combat wasnt tailored to be hitless unfortunaly. You gotta trade sometimes it feels like, so i agree with your weapon choice if you, like me, enjoy not getting hit at all. Something i used to mitigate the trade is getting a lot of counter spells. Counter, Simeon Gambit and Brace do work and gives you those necessary openings to combo. Outward would be amazing with dark souls level combat, but im still loving the game with all its bugs and jankyness. Gonna start a skeleton run soon, so i need to get my hitless combat on point.

Pvezin I’ve been binge playing a lot and the combat is getting better now that I’m getting used to it. Especially once I unlocked some skills, like the ones you mentioned. Also, once I learned some of the weapon combos, it was easier to find openings for attack. The running attack for example has a pretty bad recovery, so I try to bait them into doing it. The combat is not bad, but it does take some getting used to.

Some of the comments are mentioning when they play co-op and die they lose their bag. What happens is the host has their bag when they wake up. The guests bag is back where you both died. It happened to me.

Yea, the sword is a more agile weapon. does less damage overall, but lets you move around enemies easier. They did a good job with the different weapon types i think. They all feel different.

I believe the intent of the sword's light->heavy combo is to reposition you to the enemy's side. I've personally found it useful for that, as it's much safer to be at a lot of enemies' sides than it is to be right in front of them.

I actually enjoy using the combo for the sword. The light, then heavy combo deals a fair amount of damage, but it also ends with a side step, so you often end up just dodging the enemies counter by using it. I've also won a lot of fights with the one handed axe, not the hatchet. It's heavy has a 3 hit combination, and easily shifts into a series of light attacks, but you tend to stay in one spot, and can't help that.

Thanks for making this, good stuff! Until watching this I had completely overlooked that some weapons had extra combos. I assumed based on the first weapon I tried that all weapons were restricted to the same 4 combos: Light->Light(repeat), Heavy, Light->Heavy, and Light->Light->Heavy. However, thanks to you I now know that some weapons have extra combos like Light->Heavy->Heavy or even just Heavy->Heavy. On the subject of weapon combos, I've been very impressed with how each weapon type's moves have tactical depth beyond the standard variations of speed and power. For example, the 1-handed sword combo you mentioned as seemed weak... It is true, it doesn't have the impact of the 1-handed blunt nor the speed and dps of the 1-handed axe. However, it still is one of my favorite movesets, because the Light->Heavy and Light->Light->Heavy combos that end in a side slash that makes your character attack and move quickly to the side at the same time. This means you can stay on the offensive while simultaneously avoiding many enemy attacks without needing to roll or block. Combined with the stab for distance pokes, it gives the sword a lot of versatility to dart around the battle field that isn't there with the mace or axe. Some other moves I appreciate are the 2-handed sword set having a long-reaching slash that has the character step back at the end of it to stay out of range and the Light->Heavy combos having you step to the side then attack back toward the position you were just in (kind of an inverse of the 1-handed sword thing - you dodge to the side then slash instead of slash then dodge). The Spear moveset allows you to poke and retreat with the Light-Heavy combo, so somewhat like the 1-handed sword in allowing you to get another attack in while moving out of the way of their attack at the same time. And the Halberd/Quarterstaff moveset's Heavy attack has you step back, poke forward, and step back again to space out enemies. I just really appreciate that the movesets have more to them than just the stats on damage, impact, and speed, by adding these extra motions to some attacks gives each weapon type a unique feel and special versatility all its own (on top of each weapon type having its own unique Skill you can learn from the antler helmet guy and presumably other places later).

Need to go to Berg. In the forest. At the entrance is a bow trainer. Sniper skill and evade shot are good and the life bonus will help with being "fleshy" from light armour.

It gets annoying when you try to use a slower weapon because the enemy has enough time to counter attack when I'm going for block because the animation takes nearly 2 seconds. I have to fight with sword and shield if I want to survive a fight and the roll dodge initiates too slowly because they manage to get a hit just before my player rolls away.

sword attack combo is weaker, but if you notice it sortof combines a sideways dodge, making it perfect for interrupting enemy attack. Gives IFrames and moves you sideways

The sword light - heavy combo is - similar to greatsword - a quick attack with a side step. If timed well, you can evade an attack while hitting your oponent. (beware, no iFrames, only hitbox porn will save you)

This games core combat feels like Dark Souls 2. Dark Souls 2 is renowned for its clunkiness. Sure it has depth, but many aspects of the combat feel dated and janky. Speaking of, the whole game has a really dated feel. It feels like they started making this game in 2012, stopped, then picked up again in ~2017-2018. The graphics, art style, combat, and world reminds me of old double A xbox 360 rpgs, but not in a nostalgia sort of way, but in the cheap way. Why is it like this? Was it made on a really old engine? Game looks like it was made in Unreal Engine 3.

I do mace and dagger. Mace has good enough speed with impact. Dagger can add a spike damage in to break their impact resistance, or massive damage if backstab lands. I find it really fun playing as a fast paced assassin more or less.

I wanted to play sword and shield but got a brutal greataxe from a bandit and I have to say it rocks! But I saved the game and returned later only to find the axe and other items in my inventory had dispeared! Happen to anyone else? I'm playing on ps4. Also it seems when you die you loose stuff too...

Yes it's a bad bug. Losing items at random almost seems like it started after their first patch maybe? I've lost 63 silver on a fur tent that was gone when I saved and reloaded game later that night. I lost a regular 33 silver tent today. I lost my alchemy kit and cooking pot...ect..... Haven't lost weapons or armor yet thankfully. Hope they fix this ASAP. I'm on PS4 as well.

Basic rune magic explained;(ps4) Must a have a lexicon equipped until you can internalize it. Hold the lexicon and equip runic symbols you acquire from the mag at berg. Shim(red, 1), Egoth(purple, 2), Dez (blue, 3), Fal(green, 4). Simple; Runic blade: 1,2 Mine: 1,4 Runic lantern: 4,3 Runic protection: 3,2 More complex: (may need "arcane syntax", acquired from same mage at berg) Lightning bolt(must have runic lantern equipped): 1,4 Great runic blade: 1,2,1,2

i block and block and block and then when i try to throw a punch the enemy is ready to hit me once again no mater how fast i am so i always get hit.. AI never runs out of stamina either... But besides that i love the game i just have to run from 90% of the combat.

This. The game has great potential, but melee combat is so nonsensical and infuriating. -You can't chain attacks, outside of basic heavy/light weapon attacks -you can't interrupt animations during windup, so if you realize a split second too late that you made a mistake, congrats, you're getting punished HARD -enemies auto dodge attacks as soon as you press the button to attack and before the animation even begins -some enemies have godlike tracking on their attacks (see raptors in the hallow marsh) and can't be dodged unless you straight dodge away from them, which leaves no room for a counter attack and results in a net stamina loss for you -enemies don't have any stamina/mana and can fight endlessly -etc,etc,etc I could go on and on. I have such a love hate relationship with this game, mainly because I respect what the devs were trying to do and like the world they've created, but the mechanics they've implemented absolutely SUCK.

the games combat really is hit or miss for me (literally) I find that i cant even execute a light attack without trading with some enemies and this just seems like a flaud system when I only take three-four hits to die sometimes

True, it is hard for solo players. Even in two players, we usually abuse the aggro swapping technique, but sometimes we still manage to get hit when the enemy suddenly changes the aggro onto you and hits you so fast you have no time for reaction or are in the middle of the attack animation.

I don't understand the mechanics of the combat in this game at all. I've been playing for four days now and still loose vs a lone bandit. I've tried switching from two handed to shields but the block doesn't seem to respond quick enough and when you take a hit it takes near a quarter of your health. Traps rags and potions can help combat but they are costly and you need gold to unlock basic combat skills. Can't even afford a decent set of gear that's if you can keep your gear. 2 days in I was inprison and lossed everything but my backpack inventory. Had tattered rags and a pic axe that's it. This game is extremely punishing making it hard to play. I was really excited to play so it's kind of a shame. Hope it gets better

If you're having trouble with the melee combat try using the bow skills or pistol to chunk their health down at the start. The craftable fire pistol will burn most common enemies to death if you just kite long enough. Be patient in fights, dont just button spam. The brutal club/pistol combo with traps has been amazing for me and I'm not that good.

One thing these KZbin videos don't tell you is the enemies are alot sttonger and in larger groups outside the first starting location but the story brings you to them way to fast in my opinion. I went back farmed all the dungeons over and over till I had the gold to max archery then left the start location. Now I own everything

I really like the one handed moveset for the sword if only because the mobility allows you to stick like glue to most enemies while quickly slipping hits in then moving to the left or the right. This paired very well with leg sweep which has a very low cooldown and drops most enemies to half their stability, making a quick weapon like a one handed sword or axe devastating.

I bought the prospector pack (75 capacity), saved my game, when I reloaded, half of my inventory was gone. All my potions, my main melee weapon (didn't have it equipped at the time), and all of my magic stones too. That's a game breaker for me, the whole reason I bought the pack was so I could carry more, now most of my inventory is gutted and I don't need it.

They might have overdone it with the slow ST regen during combat. Unless the MC has caught some sort of crippling disease or led a very unhealthy life prior to the start if the game.

You can buy Merchant armor and skills to consume less stamina.

Before going on any long journey or getting into a fight, it's usually a good idea to drink water and eat some kind of gaberry based dish. Together, you'll end up with some pretty decent stamina regen.

One handed axes have a 3 hit combo as strong attack. I tried dagger and i don't like it because you can't use skills after a roll of when moving sometimes, the game's combat is not that well polished. Didn't try a pistol but i read has high reload time that is basically one use in combat. Probably similar with HP potion use which takes too much to properly use during a fight, i have to run around a big rock or something and abuse the poor AI and its stupid pathfinding to drink a potion. A shield is good but after getting used with the game a bit i feel that the shield is pretty useless. As it can't block magic damage so i can get better results just by dodging anyway. So i prefer two handed weapons too. Mainly the axe just because of that two hit combo. The other ones have one hit strong attacks which are mainly big swipes more inclined to hit multiple enemies. So the axe seems to be more damaging when focused on one target, which is the style of combat i prefer in many games. On my first character i didn't had a clue that you can only get 3 skill points. So because you can't respec i started another one, basically at the start of the game, or at least is what i feel it is. I hope not. My aim is to play all HP and stamina without any mana. But i'm torn between getting 15 to HP and stamina or stronger boon. Sure, without mana i will lose the ability to cast boons too but i found out that you can basically get every boon consuming special food. So basically a tossup between farming for ingredients or losing hp and stamina for mana, either way you still lose inventory space for mana recovery or boon specific food. But sure, if focused on mana recovery you will need less space to hold what you need thus leaving more space for other loot for you to sell and turn it to gold. Also there is the issue that casting certain boons drops you max hp or stamina while getting those boons through food avoids that drawback. From my fist char i noticed that the boon bonus is doubled with that shaman passive skill. So i'm leaning towards letting that 15 hp/stam bonus go. Farm some boon granting food and invest in monk warrior and hunter skills, with a good greataxe and bow and no mana. Probably the best mix in the game. Only hope that the game's story is not short. Because if the survival part is its only gimmick, then it kind of sucks. Some have compared it with Kenshi but i'm not so sure. I just have to play it a bit more. Hence the hope, as my feeling is that if the story flops or too short and is basically inexistent. Without much side content like treasure hunting and other side quests, then it doesn't have much to hold on. As this game is not really a sandbox. Besides your character, i haven't seen any mechanics or characters to let you play with in various ways you can think about.

Eh not all enemy's there are some enemy's who you can circle wait they miss and as you attack they recover and attack again taking 1/4th of your health...also try circling 2 bandits see how that works

@@jaden2758 i easy circle jerked two bandits... :p It's slow, but easy. The problem is games like ds have tracking animation moves, this game doesnt. Therefore it's all on the AI and its shit. Ds AI is fucking shit, but they make up in the moveset. This game does not. EVERYTHING can just be circle jerked ;) If more than one, you just keep circling till they are in the centre together and pick them off.

I started playing yesterday. I went out to get the $150.00 back pay for the blood debt. I drank ocean water and got indigestion. Got in a couple fights and passed out. Woke up 15 days later they sold my house and took half my money. I dont know where to get the certain basic recipes health, stamina, common sickness? When I est food it dont restore my health? I'm always running out of backpack space I dont no what to keep and sell?

Outcasteye 711 try using traps they will save you alot. Oh and the mage in town sells the recipes for potions and wraps, as well as a few made potions. Sell any weapon you dont see yourself using I personally dont use two handed weapons i use one hand and shield. Most armor I keep since some is used as the base crafting like the fang weapons or the ammolite armor.

Look the recipes up online. You can mix the ingredients manually to unlock the recipes for free. If you don't mind cheating like that. Also you probably need to rest to get you up back up. It all goes down from use-exhaustion naturally. Which requires sleep to fix. Also I'd start a new character if I were you. That's a rough start. Talk to the town people. Mainly In bar person and guards give advice and quest clues. There is a very easy thing you can do in less than 10 minutes to earn a favor to pay for home instead of money. You have to talk to people though and read the clues.

Thanks for this video. I know it's super old, but i want to try Outward again. It's a super fun game, but i always stopped after the first region because of the tons of lowtime when running arround. But at the moment i'm in the mood for such a game and remembered Outward. Normaly i play Archer or Mage, but this time i want to play melee to see if this is more fun. Because i was cheesing the hell out of enemys as archer and mage, always using traps and stuff overfilling my backpack xx. At the moment i'm really bad at the timing. so this video helped a lot and i will try to get better~ and hope this will engage me longer with the game when i don't have endless fights because i use traps and stuff xD.

What system are you playing this on? After watching yours and other videos I bought it for the PS4 and the combat SUCKS. I am used to Eurojank so that is not the problem. Example: 2 hyenas on the road by the first town, I attack and hit them with a machete, swung two early as they were in the range of polearm only, they both take damage, both come up to me and I swing again and miss both while they are close and in front of me. Back up and swing again both disappear and reappear on my left after the swing. I swear this is how 5 different fights went.

I really like this game but the flipping combat is so irritating.. It’s literally undoing 20 plus years of melee-based games. It’s frustrating that a hit doesn’t register or faze the enemies what’s so ever? I mean even realistically you hit someone with a mace they’ll wince or recoil from it, but not in Outward. Encounter guys with shields is by far the most annoying aspect. Another thing I’ve been noticed is an enemy will finish an attack cycle, so I wait with my shield and once it’s done I’ll initiate an attack. For some reason regardless of whom I’m fighting they seem to just activate even faster and cut into me.. It’s mind boggling. I’m on console so (graphics don’t make a game) I don’t know if all of the bugs or whatever have been fleshed out on it’s cross over or what.. I’ve deleted it twice and reinstall it. I truly love the survival aspect. It’s literally a portion from my ideal game. Now only if I can find an rpg whose combat is as satisfying as KoA.

This games combat is fucking stupid, I dont see how anyone manages to play through the first hour with how shit the combat is. Literally the only fight possible is a 1 on 1, groups of 2 or more are ridiculous to fight because you start hitting one and during the animation you just get KO'd by the other person relentlessly swinging at you. Since for some dumb ass reason you cant cancel a swing to block.

I'm quite confused about how the stats and whatnot work. I was wearing full half-plate and still died in a few hits from a normal bandit, and I see other people fighting huge monsters with similar armor and barely taking damage. Why is that?

Hi guys, I noticed a very annoying mechanic when fighting those ice mages or witches or whatever they're called, I can't hit them after I knocked them down, it's like they have some invulnerability window that ends when they're back on their feet, it's really annoying, I have to wait for them to stand up before hitting them otherwise I'm just swinging my weapon in the air, is it intended to work like this?

The problem with this game is you don't really need to learn anything all this is pointless info. The simple fact is this is a game where buff stacking or trap stacking is way to over powered. What is the advanced combat guide stack the 5 lightning effects to one shot shit. Because thats what i do. Royal mantacore 3 hits this game is dumb they didn't think this shit out. Sure you can tell me well you dont have to stack a bunch of buffs and boons you can play it sub optimal its a RPG get Real. I'm not saying its a trash game i hear only 10 people made it but man its got to many holes for me to read comments and people in here telling each other its a good game.

I wish the block wasn't so shit. It takes so long to switch between attacking and blocking that it's basically pointless. I'm not asking for block-cancelling, I just want to not half to do my full attack animation cycle, reset to neutral then have to wait another beat beyond that.

I've had one frame drop area so far, and the graphics aren't great on any platform but frame rate is good for 99% of game for me so far. Looks like crap but it's rewarding to play and worth supporting imo

Stagger would make things easy. Use kick + high impact weapons to chain knockdowns if you want stunlocks.

The purple effect can be applied to any weapon, its from spiritual varnish. which i believe can be crafted, brought and ofc found. hope this helped some :P

The game plays fine, but as the other guy said, graphics are a little worse than pc (not that its particularly good there either). Biggest issue on ps4 is the loading times, i regularly see around the 60 second mark on the ps4 pro just to enter/leave a town. I bought ourward to play coop personally; just to offer my two cents, (as another play who finished sekiro) stick with Sekiro and see if your still interested in this game once you're completely ready to move on. The combat in Outward is incredibly floaty, lacking in impact and at times unresponsive. I shouldn't need to explain why that can be incredibly jarring coming straight off sekiro.

Yep been trying to figure out patterns but they seem to be none existant atleast for me for now. Im in the first zone and other than the troglodites that hit once and then i culd hit them back every mob is almost hit/block with shield/hit. For example a bandit with a machete doesnt stop hitting me, he just swings the sword 3 times at me and starts swining again as soon as the first swing end, if i dodge and try to hit he just turns around at me and instatnly starts his 3 hit combo , if i block it he gets a bit of push back and instantly starts another combo, the only way i managed to beat him is by blocking and swinging my mace once and puting up shield again, so i only got hit by his first strike. The white chocobo bird? Pances around me then hits my shield i manage to hit it once and instatnly block cuz its hit animation is already half way done. They seem not to have stagger/hit recharge for me, they just constantly hit eaven if im in middle of hitting them, if i try to chain 2-3 hits i get hit theres nothing i can do.
