I rediscovered a lot of great tunes while making this video. The SMS really doesn't get enough credit for its music.

The chiptune version of Jerry Goldsmith's Rambo theme is a thing of beauty. Nothing against the Ashura/Secret Commando theme, but the US got the better opening title, no questions about it.

We have it here in Brazil. There is a local company named TecToy which was the brazilian arm of Sega. It's still making Master System and Mega Drive nowadays, including a mini version for Master System, everything licensed by Sega. The mini Master System is just a controller that you plug straight to the TV, and it comes with 40 games in memory.

Yes they should've made one when the Nes mini came out. It was cited in the Sega Lord x KZbin channel as being a real Sega letdown. A criminally under rated console.
@skycloud48022 жыл бұрын
But if they do which variant? I think they will probably need to make one with a changeable cover plate to suit the ones people like. As a European, the Master System 2 edition was the one I remember fondly (despite its limitations). They'll also may have to figure out the pause button dilemma. (PS: if they ever do release a Sega Master System Mini Classic, somebody reading this, please ping me a reply message. Thanks. 👊✌️😄)

I was automatically humming many of the melodies while this video played in the background. Amazing that I still had them in my head after all these years. Now my voice is gone. ;) The first four notes of the first level of Wonder Boy still put me on guard right away. They are so demanding. And I still get the creeps from the dungeon music of Phantasy Star. It puts imagines in my head of those ugly Ghuls who were drooling out some kind of brown vomit. I was so scared of them, I almost always ran away from the battle. ;)

The north american master system only had three square waves and one noise generator. This is why much of music sounds similar, because it had a limited pallete of digital wavforms to choose from. The NES had a richer palette yet because of this a more generic and less definitive sound. The SMS ( sans FM ) is arguably more iconic sounding.

I wonder how many are genuine Mk3 / SMS games and how many Mk1 (SG1000) games that happen to be compatible or were repackaged? The title screens of a lot of the earlier ones (Secret Commando, The Ninja, Thunder Blade etc) look like they're using a very limited palette, as distinct from e.g. the more colourful Choplifter, Alex Kidd, Double Dragon, Golvellius (etc) screens. (yes, that's as far as I've got so far ;)

In Europe the game was called Secret Commando. They changed the name and obviously the title screen to have Rambo on it. It was done to get sales. Sega felt that they needed something to push sales.
