I realise that this video was made around 7 years ago. I would like to thank you so much for explaining how to do the applique using the freezer on the top of the of the piece. I did a project back in 1998 doing this method but just couldn’t get my head around it. After watching this video l now feel that l can remake the project again. Once again a great lesson. I will keep watching the other lessons.

Thank you from down under in Melbourne Australia 🇦🇺. This tutorial is great and so entertaining. I am wanting to learn needleturn appliqué as I'm on a Facebook group called love and hugs by Natalie bird and they have appliqué on some of the blocks. I've done embroidery but not needleturn but now feel more confident in having a try of this. Love the story about the freezer paper it was initially hard to get in Australia but quilt stores have it now but it's not cheap like in the USA. Sending hugs to everyone around the world, stay safe and stay home if you can. We have tough rules here in Melbourne but one of the lowest cases of Corona in the world. Lucky we all have our love for craft to keep us entertained in isolation. Love to try to do this quilt too. Thanks Jan.

Just Starting to Applique, was hoping for more machine sewing than hand sewing. Oh well I guess I'll have to see this through and see where it take me. I do hope the journey will be fun.

I don't understand... Is the freezer paper left on the fabric and sewed into the piece? What happens once you iron it on?
@QNNtv7 жыл бұрын
Hello, generally you would remove the freezer paper from the back of the applique just prior to sewing it onto the background. When the freezer paper is ironed onto the fabric, it forms a temporary bond that is easy to peel off. This temporary bond can help to keep the shape of the piece intact when awaiting being sewn on, and it can also help you cut out the applique to the exact size needed because the freezer paper, while ironed on, won't shift like a pinned on paper template would. In some cases, you may wish to leave the freezer paper on the applique while sewing it on -- you can pull the freezer paper out just before sewing the last part of the applique, or you can cut a slit in the background fabric (within the applique area so the slit doesn't show on the front of the project) and remove it that way. Jan shows this technique in a later episode. For the scallops and ground Jan shows in this episode, you can leave the freezer paper in until it's completely sewn on because there will be an opening at the seam allowance on the outside of the background piece where you could pull the freezer paper out at that point.

Looks like you leave the sale dot in and not remove it before you applique´ it on the scallop. Is that ok?
@QNNtv7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary Kay, you can actually leave the sale dot in and never remove it if you aren't planning to launder the quilt. If you are planning to launder, you can leave the sale dot in until you've almost appliqued all the way around it and then remove it -- or applique it fully in, cut a small slit in the backing fabric under the applique, and remove the sale dot from there. Otherwise, you can remove the sale dot before you start appliqueing.

I'm sorry this is an insane way to use freezer paper. Its much easier to iron the freezer paper to the front of the fabric, and then you just quickly needle turn underneath with the paper on top. Because the freezer paper holds to the paper it makes the needle turn really accurate. When done you just peel away the paper from the top. So easy and very accurate even for small items and awkward curves.

Also, if using freezer paper and leaving it on do you still turn under edges?

I draw a line around the freezer paper and put a number on it that coordinates with the pattern piece. Then I just toss the freezer paper as I’m ready to use it and match the lines on the pattern to the drawn line on the piece.

I keep getting lost because she never finishes a sentence and moves from subject to subject without telling you she's changing subjects. Like she was talking about the scallops and then she was talking about the dot sizes?I don't know. Maybe I'm having a bad hearing day. I know she's very good but................................
