Overbrook Asylum - Photographs from the Basement

The Overbrook asylum in Cedar Grove, NJ was left abandoned for a decade after shuttering in 2007. During that time countless patient files and hospital records rotted away in the basements and miles of underground connecting tunnels. Most interesting to us were the many slides of film that were scattered throughout the lowest level of the hospital. Photos of daily life on the wards, images that breathed life back into the decaying building above the tunnels those old photographs found themselves discarded in. Over the years we digitized every slide we came across, and though many were damaged beyond repair, we amassed a collection of photographs that tell a story of a place that was far more vibrant and alive than many may have imagined.
