When AMD released the Wraith cooler it was widely accepted as a decent stock cooler... what about AMD's new Prism cooler found bundled with the 2700x??

@v KEITH v i understand what youre saying but when you buy an exotic car youre paying for exclusivity. Supply and demand. That doesnt really apply to cpu's. There is no shortage of intel cpu's. Intel should be alot more competitive with their pricing then they are and thats why amd outsells them 3 to 1.

Still no excuse for how bad Intel's stock coolers are. Those sad excuses for coolers noticeably throttle performance on their non-K SKUs by not allowing max turbo to happen. Also, if they did it to save money, why do Intel CPUs cost more?

Jay thanks for the test as this video convinced me to use the stock cooler on a 2700x instead of my water cooling preference. My son who is 9 years old built the system ground up and was absolutely floored when it turned on for the first time. He thinks the build is for my friend but it’s his Xmas gift and he has no idea he built his own Xmas gift. We recorded the process and he is looking to post it to his KZbin. Anyways Thanks again for convincing me it’s ok to go back to air cooling on the 2700x stock cooler I abandoned years ago.

On the point of the tower coolers not cooling components on the motherboard, I recent bought a Zalman CNPS9900max because it was on newegg for 10 bucks. And I have to say that style of cooler needs to come back. When testing it compared to my other tower cooler the temps of my SATA m.2 dropped 7c, which it just crazy. Unfortunately I wasnt able to get a temperature on my VRMs. I think the Zalman due to the design and openness of it does a great job of circulating air around the socket more then a traditional tower cooler, its basically the best of both worlds. Zalman is also supplying AM4 brackets for some of their coolers, making them still worth it.

there is a small interruptor behind where the rgb motherboard header wire onto the wraith prism that has ¨L¨ and ¨H¨ , that way you manually let the cooler set up a more agressive fan curve speed at the expense of noise, still a terrific cooler for the ryzen though, intel needs to make such a capable cooler for their i9s i7s to get back in the game.

i always thought air flow would be better in a case then on an open bench as you stated at approx 6:10 in this vid, my reason for that assumption though goes down to arrow dinamics mostly... with the case you can keep a seal around the air and force the flow over the entire motherboard and direct it to spacific components with added parts that direct air flow when its open bench... the air is more loose theres no pressure and therefore nothing restraining it to move over the rest of the motherboard...

Both sides have advantages, but right now AMD offers pretty good gaming, great workstation use, and a good upgrade path in the future. I'd say the small dip in gaming performance is worth everything else AMD has to offer right now.

Shmozone Of course they both have advantages but Intel is ahead in gaming. In some games by alot cause of the different clock speeds and having more cores does nothing when most aren't being used.

I've OCed on a stock air cooler. Wraith. A R7 1700 to 3.8Ghz. I strapped a fan I pulled from a space heater and zip tied it onto the slot where my front side panel went. Plugged that bastard in and it roared. I OCed it to 3.8 and got like ~45C.

I would say, that topblowers do rather spread the heat of the cpu to surrounding elements on the board, what i do not appreciate in any way.

My brave little 1400 got pushed to its absolute limits with its stock cooler in a phanteks p400 non mesh with only one intake and one exhaust fan. It never could post at 4.0 for me but 3.9 and 3.8 were 'just' unstable. 3.7 all day though.

Back in the day, I got my Sempron 2800+ from 1.6GHz to 2.4GHz with the stock cooler (and even without using any thermal paste other than what was already on it). That thing lasted for many years until I finally had to tune it down to 2.32GHz when it finally lost stability.

I just got the 2700 X with that cooler and under any load that increases the fan speed, which is frequently , it is unacceptably loud. So now I’m am looking for quieter coloring options short of liquid cooling.

So anyone who says "no you cant under any circumstance" is wrong. end of story. you can. How well? obviously not as well, cmon, i dont gotta tell you that.

You can do AMD Turbo Mode with stock cooler! Custom Clock is risky though. I have a AMD Ryzen 5, By default the BIOS uses a Quiet and Cool Feature with standard clock. My chip runs cooler with turbo mode active as it disables the quiet and cool feature and uses Standard Fan Speeds. 3.2GHz is my standard Clock, 3.4 Turbo. I was getting up to 65c at standard clock under full load. With Turbo I have not Gotten over 57c.

I use a standard Wraith cooler and overclock my ryzen 5 2600 to 4.05ghz with 38c idle and 68c at heavy loads (Stays under 50c for the most part with 40% fan speed) I think the cooler is more than good enough, if i bought another air cooler i could maybe get 5% performance max? which i dont think is worth paying for imo.

I hate the screws on the stock cooler, the flipping springs that keep the screws at the perfect tightness(retention, closeness??) make this really nasty sound. Not a really fun experience for a person who is building their first high end pc(first pc), and that's IF you get the screw in the backplate the first time!

The most impressive thing about this cooler, is it came in the box next to the 2700x. Never really liked air coolers, they always seem too big too bulky, not that cool looking, which is why i spend extra on an AIO. But the Wraith Prism, oh man, i think I'm gonna delay getting the AM4 Mounting bracket for a bit.

Why would the air from a top-down cooler help with the other components? Wouldn't that air be pretty hot already from cooling the cpu radiator? How is blowing hot air or ram any good? I would rather have a side airflow cooler pointed to an exhaust case fan.

Around the same for me also during long gaming it never goes over 60. Im pretty blown away by how good this "stock" cooler is, dont give a crap about fan sounds once headset is on you dont notice anyway. I dont bother overclocking. Im just wondering If I upgraded to a 5700x or 5800x could I still use it or have to invest in some liquid cooling.

AMD cooler looks good (I have one at home), but for today crazy CPUs it's really not enough. I have Ryzen 3800X and in 100% load it has 80°C even with AIO. I tried AMD cooler and it was almost 90 with 3000 RPM which is actually very good for stock cooler, but not enough for really using that.

I argue that a downward blowing CPU fan in theory is a terrible idea because you would be moving hot air from the hottest part of your computer directly onto the rest of your motherboard which isn't good practice.

Definitely with the AMD Wraith RGB. One of the finest and neatest air coolers on the planet. Have an FX8350 that achieved 4.5 which isn't a huge deal, but it's an almost .5 Ghz OC. Bought an MSI Core Frozr L, had to de-skirt a DIMM and everything only to achieve 4.3 and very unstable at that. It just didn't pull the heat away fast enough so I was getting a lot of temp fluctuation during heavy load, Yuck! I'm a firm believer that vertical CPU coolers while pretty, are all junk. Especially those 4 fan aluminum cooler sandwiches they try to pimp out for a quick buck. *cough* Noctua *cough*
