If you look after them then these so called fast fashion items can last a long time. The Asda jackets are nice. I quite like silver version

I suspect that one reason why full-length overcoats, much like the more formal styles of hats, are becoming rarer is a very practical one - the automobile! Come to think of it, next time I go cruising the used clothing stores I’ll have to be on the lookout for something in the “car coat” length. I’d love to find, just for the hell of it, a tweed overcoat like the one Bela Bartok wore. Google him, chaps, and you’ll easily find the famous portrait of Bartok in that coat. What a guy! Not just a great composer, but a great dresser.

I agree completely that an overcoat is a classic winter wardrobe choice for the well-dressed man, and because it has fallen into disuse amongst the majority, will make one instantly stand out in a crowd. Worn with an appropriate wool or cashmere scarf, a pair of leather gloves, and a hat -my choice would be a grey, fur felt fedora- an overcoat in blue, or grey, or butterscotch will keep you warm in the winter months without having to sacrifice sartorial sophistication. Puffer coats/jackets are, in my opinion, what baseball caps are to the world of men's hats: the lowest common denominator, and a style choice that enhances the appearance of virtually no one. And you're absolutely correct, Ash, about the availability of overcoats for fantastically low prices at thrift shops and second-hand stores. -This winter I bought a double-breasted, peak-lapelled cashmere overcoat in a beautiful butterscotch colour for the princely sum of seven Canadian dollars. (That's less than a cup of coffee and a pastry at the patisserie I frequent most mornings.) My favourite overcoat is a single-breasted navy model made by Crombie of Scotland of 100% percent camel's hair. -It's just as soft as cashmere, but wears like iron. I've owned this particular garment for thirty years, and it was likely twenty years old when I bought it at a yard sale when I first began my career as a high school teacher. On a cost-per-wear basis, a good winter overcoat might be one of the most economical sartorial choices you will ever make.

3:40 the lining being of a natural material is important as well. A silk or bamboo satin, when paired with a natural wool over top will do much better at regulating temperature AND moisture than a polyester or acrylic.

There are several types of overcoat. They all look great as a general rule (although peacoats don’t look very dressy to me). Every cultured man should have at least one overcoat to wear to concerts or for special occasions or to take your loved one out for a nice dinner or winter walk in the park. Overcoats are a challenge in Canada because of cold winds but with a windproof underlayer this can be managed just fine.

The boutonniere really works. Also your distinction between the newsboy cap and the flat cap was fascinating. I usually think of the newsboy cap as more causal than the flat cap, but you are absolutely right: it fits with the overcoat where the flat cap would not. Finally, the color balance on your background seems right, but you said your overcoat is gray. Really? I thought it was a very good looking blue, so it’s either your camera or my monitor. Excellent episode--as usual.

As a teen back in the 70s my cold weather favs was a real US Navy Peacoat and my Granddaddy's Stetson fedora. In my 20s I outgrew the peacoat so I passed it on. Nowadays I have a nice heavy wool dress overcoat from Banana Republic 15+ yrs ago, and a lesser quality everyday one from the thrift store. Still have the fedora but it needs a good stretch, cleaning, and a new liner and sweatband but theres no place to get a hat repaired within 1000 miles of me. I havn't gotten up the nerve to ship it all the way to NYC. Also another gripe, apparently shoe repair is a lost profession these days. I have some great boots and dress shoes that need resoling but there is nowhere within a days drive to get it done. Even taylors are hard to find. You used to be able to get a suit fitted at major dept stores but nowadays you are lucky if you can even find an employee to take your money much less get the garment altered.

Hello Ash. Indeed I have made some good deals in thrift shops and got high quality coats. Nevertheless I regret that many coats in stock are black as I find this difficult to style. So I recently bought a new dark brown overcoat that is quite easy to style with darker green tones, blue, grey and beige. In addition to that I have some Fedoras and Trillbys and they look good with my overcoats, but my 8 panel newsboy caps look also great. Styling the coat eitther with hat or newsboy cap sends different massages to the public which is indeed my intention. Thank you for your efforts and advice. Greetings. Satoshi

Good morning Ash. It's a pleasure as always to see your latest video. I regard my overcoats and corresponding details as my stylish secret weapon to looking good for at least half of the year. So few men own one and fewer know how to maximise it's potential. I’ll always put my outfit together by choosing my shirt, tie, buttonhole and pocket square more with a bias to coordinate with my overcoat rather than with the suit or jacket underneath. My suits tend to be more versatile and work with everything whereas my overcoats don’t. This is because my overcoats have a wider range of colours, textures and details that make first impressions more impactful when I’m wearing an overcoat that works with well chosen accessories, people see the suit afterwards when I take the coat off. I’d cite the Hamburg scene in Tomorrow Never Dies as an example of the overcoat stealing the scene whilst being perfectly coordinated with a cream shirt and most wonderful tie, regardless of the suit underneath. The only coat I own without a breast pocket that I don’t embellish with a buttonhole is my trench coat. I do enjoy using a buttonhole that’s got a personal meaning to me, I have a few that resemble the White Rose of Yorkshire and others with colours that represent organisations that are part of my life and history. I took inspiration many years ago from seeing the late Duke of Edinburgh’s style that I’m glad you showed here. As a result if the coat I’m wearing has an outside breast pocket I’ll always wear a pocket square that works with my shirt colour instead of something that’s more flamboyant. I find that more elegant and it feels more discreet. Enjoy your weekend and thank you again, Kind regards, Rob.

Off eBay I bought double breasted camel wool topcoat, leather buttons, breast pocket, and epaulets. I never had a true topcoat and went more casual. I could wear with either navy blazer or sportcoat, but probably will see as a dressier, but less warm peacoat. Turtlenecks and jumpers underneath and a flat cap on top. My peacoat is a naval officer’s reefer and quite warm. My formal overcoats are my naval officers’s double breasted black coat (swapped out the gold buttons) and a Brooks Brothers gray herringbone tweed where I added the Chesterfield type collar. The camel coat was a lucky find that provides a difference and a sub for the trench coat in dry weather. Never liked using the trench coat if not raining. Looks wrong to me with a sweater.

No breast pocket. Toying with the idea of finding a dark blue/navy example from further up the quality tree... but a bit more fitted so it can be warn casually too. These "over/top coats" were very trendy amongst my friends and workmates in the 80s as an everyday cold weather coat.... I always thought they looked fantastic.... even as a kid. Great video Sir. I find living in Derbyshire, going from central heated house to climate controled car and air conditioned office, means quick dashes outside need little more than my suit jacket. But every now an again, im called to London for work or will attend an event i.e. funeral where i must stand outside. I have a single breasted mid-thigh coat in A.Moon tweed. Its very fitted so this is usually worn with a single layer under like a mock neck. Think it was £75 from M&S when they still made quality menswear... I have a Ralph Lauren lined trench coat that is a tank. £25 off ebay! In all honesty I rarely find myself cold enough to need this. Last time i wore it was when we had snow on the ground. But its great to have as an option in the wardrobe. Then as a true overcoat Ive just procured a Charles Tyrwhitt cashmere job off ebay for £40. Navy goes with all my suits and its lovely quality.

Lovely video, Ash, as always! I have several overcoats, many made of thick tweed. And I find that those ones, being a bit less formal, goes very well with both flat caps and newsboy caps (likewise made of tweed). And when there’s a breast pocket, I put a pocket square there - usually a wool or cashmere one, since they’re better in rain or snow. A lapel pin or boutonniere is an alternative, but I would avoid wearing one at the same time as a pocket square. It would be a bit too much.

I very much agree with your style points. Each person should find the style that "suits" them (pardon the lame pun). My choice is a personal one based on my body shape. I am thin, but my torso is fairly straight down from my chest to my hips. If my body type were more "V-shaped", I might have opted for double-breasted, slightly wider lapels as a basic frame. One has to be honest with one's body type and dress to accentuate it, not denigrate it. I think many men today are unaware of different outerwear styles, and default to purchase and wear the last one they saw that looked good on a male model in a magazine, regardless of the effect on their own body features. My personal choices for formal outerwear are: 1. Navy blue cashmere overcoat with breast pocket, single breasted buttons, brown leather gloves, white silk scarf. I place the brown gloves in my breast pocket to replace the pocket square (the brown is a contrast to the dark navy blue of the cashmere). I wear the silk scarf in an open fashion to expose my tie, with the silk just peeking past the lapels. While the cashmere is thin, it is extremely warm, and the silk of the scarf is a good wind protector. I top it off with a felt navy fedora (mine is one purchased by my wife for me on Jermyn Street around 1994, which I still wear and is in good condition - as you always point out - quality lasts) 2. Chesterfield with breast pocket with the same brown leather gloves, white silk scarf, and navy fedora (although I will option to a dark brown fedora). I use the chesterfield for travel on public transportation, or if the weather is a bit inclement, as it tends to wear better on a regular basis. I do not wear my scarf as you do because I wear bow ties, and if I wrapped my scarf as you do, when I remove the scarf to go indoors, the tie has been mussed up, and I may not have time to visit the men's room to fix it before I proceed further.

It's a colour they called "burnt orange" but I'd call it a really dark cinnamon colour. I do find a flat cap works nicely with this one but it probably wouldn't work as well with a more conservative over coat. I have a few overcoats, most from thrift stores. I have a good wool double breasted 1 which looks like a "British warm" i think is called & a grey wool herringbone single breast that was made for a local store before being donated, it was made in Yugoslavia & I think still have the last owner name on the tag. both I got around $20-$10 I also have a Burberry trench coat from a more curated vintage store so it was more expensive then a regular thrift, I'm 90% sure it's authentic due to the details and features but there is no "made in" I can't find so I can't come to a complete conclusion. there is also my duffel coat from gloverall which is the only woolen coat I bought new on sale. Overcoats I find is best to go 2nd hand at first since it will save you more money because a good over coat that is full length ending at the knees as well being brand new can cause you a good amount. If i were to own 1 type of overcoat I guess I would choose a duffel since it can be easily dress up & down plus the hood is a nice feature, as well the toggles are more easier to handle then buttons if i'm wearing gloves. But that's me maybe a pea coat can do balance casual and formal better.

Pro tip for adding panache to an overcoat…have a tailor add a pop of colored fabric underneath the back part of your collar. For a camel hair, I recommend purple or a nice red. It entirely depends on the situation. If you drive a car in the coat, a shorter coat would be much more practical.

What hat to wear with an overcoat? I've never liked (or worn) a fedora, so I went back to the 60s Carnaby Street, London. I wear either a Greek fisherman's cap (John Lennon and Jackie Stewart) or I wear an Irish walking hat.

UPDATE - Just last week, I wore my one overcoat which has a breast pocket. What pocket square to wear? I chose a multi color piece which had black, lite gray and a block of red.on it. I had all three colors showing in a chaos fold. (And a charcoal gray flap cap on m,y head)

Ash, is the pocket square you recommend for the overcoat the same pocket square to use with your sport coat when you wear it independently?

I would use the same squares for either. Nothing special for an overcoat.

Great video sir .As you today sugested I purchased an over coat of far better quality than idd have otherwise been able to justified buying The said coat will perform several tasks including keeping me warm at formal events and allowed me to make a modest donation to a very worthwhile charity. It is at the moment being adjusted to make the sleeves shorter . I looked long and hard to find this coat I believe it's a 80/20 wool cashmere blend Keep up the great content

Hi Ash, I think when buying an overcoat people should be aware that all wool overcoats are not the same quality, as also with leather coats and car seats. Some cheaper wool overcoats are rather heavy on the shoulders, and the wool is not particularly soft. I would be inclined to spend more, get quality and keep it for years.

this video is so applicable to be, as I'm currently in the market for a really good overcoat. having trawled the usual suspects (eBay, marketplace etc) I still haven't found "the one' yet, but yours looks impeccable. Personally, I want a nice double-breasted for that extra warmth! great video as usual! P.S I don't think we live that far away from each other (south Somerset) 🙂

Dear Ash, great episode (as usually). One comment regarding gloves. I don't agree with you about your color rating. Historical the white gloves were the most formal choice, white silk gloves were worn with the white tie, also inside e.g. during ball dancing... Derivation for the morning dress, wearing outside, was unlined (light) gray leather gloves. For country side activities brown ( peckary) leather gloves were used, probably matching with foot wear. Black leather gloves were the most utilitarian version, dirt not so noticeable as on white or gray or even brown, was more or less preserved for lower class, for "foot folk", for dirty work etc. Since anything about sartorial men's style is more or less derived or carried over from our golden past 100 years ago, it also applies to the gloves: gray is still the most formal color for outside, followed by brown and other colours, and finally black as least formal. Actually quite the opposite to shoes color. P.S. For your reference pay attention to gloves worn by late Prince Philip or Prince Charles/now King.

I am one of the “ foot folk “ , never had a horse though I have been in a number of Scottish country houses with very high front doors so that the Laird could ride into the the great hall without dismounting.

Agree with you on manmade nonense. Its not safe for your health, it wont last and will go bad quicker... I will say invest in a double breasted vintage overcoat. Ive heard multiple style people saying to buy single breasted its weird. If you are going all out, go all out... Get the real thing... Double breasted full lapels and throw in a pocket square and lapel pin or flower..

Good morning Ash Saturday routine engaged. Run, breakfast, brew and the Chap's guide. As usual, all valid points. It's a tad nippy up in Yorkshire today, but the tasks I have to do this weekend require a more utilitarian approach to my attire. I do have an overcoat though I've not yet had occasion to wear it. I think I may seek a black one in the near future. I seldom wear a hat unless it's raining and I don't want to get my hearing aids wet. I do not own any baseball caps so it's a "newsboy" or "bobble" for me. On with the day now 🫡

Hello Ash. Great video as always. I purchased a wool overcoat 20 years ago, and for practical reasons, the gentleman who assisted me in the shop recommended a longer coat. The one I have falls between my knees and ankles. While it makes for warmer commutes, is this too long or out of fashion?

I have a Barneys Double Breasted Overcoat from the 60s . It is 1000% more warm than any modern jacket especially full length. This is also where youtube style gurus are wrong. It doesnt matter how short or tall you are. If its cold as balls and you have a full length overcoat you will be toasty.... Another mistake is not having two types. A car coat/peacoat and a traditional overcoat...

Any man over the age of 18 who goes out in public wearing a baseball cap is beyond sartorial redemption, unless of course, he is actually playing baseball. As to the flat cap, on a windy day, a plain gray or Navy flat cap coordinating with the overcoat is a reasonable compromise.

Navy peacoats of that vintage can easily be found. They were also produced by the hundreds of thousands during WWII, making them around 80 years old today.

As a kid reading the Beano comic it had a strip entitled Mighty Moth, whose weekly plot involved some chap unsuccessfully trying eliminate said creature. I'd imagine the biggest hurdle to woollen longevity would be keeping the pesky insects at bay ? And they do favour the good quality stuff especially. :)
