Shana believes she's had a fear of bees and wasps since childhood. If she ever encountered a bee or wasp, she would just run away no matter what she was doing. Naturally this dramatically affected her social life during the spring and summer months, as she is literally petrified to the point she won’t go to places she knows that wasps or bees will be around, such as parks, picnic areas or barbecues.
Working for the ambulance service, if Shana did not overcome this fear, it could potentially be disastrous if she had to attend an emergency situation in a park over summer.

As a lot of people have commented on here, bees, while scary, are not as threatening as wasps. How can one do such "exposure" therapy with a wasp? I can understand holding a bee and being fine, but wasps are a lot less calm... what is the solution? How can one hold a wasp??

I'm a 35 year old man (i know!) who is still wary of bees and wasps. If the buzzing sound is close it causes the body to feel some weird sensation, slight panic. Was stung by a bee in summer as a young child, and stung a few times by a wasp some years later, was putting on my trousers taken from the wardrobe, and the bugger stung me a few times before flying out of a trouser leg. No wonder I still haven't recovered lol

I don't really understand why I am so afraid of them because I have even been stung. I remember when I was on the playground, I'm chilling and all of a sudden a wasp gets mad at me. So it starts chasing me, and I go to a place where there is a lot of people. My heart is beating fast, I'm shaking, and I want to cry. It's almost like a panic attack. I'm repeated the words "I don't know what to do, get it away from me!" Just hearing the buzz of it gives me a awful feeling of dread. Nobody even understands it, they make fun of me or tell me that I shouldn't be afraid of them. I also remember when I was sitting in a van waiting for my Grandma to come out of the bank. I was SUFFERING. She was taking a awfully long time. It was warm weather, the windows were rolled up, and there were wasps everywhere. I was sobbing, I didn't know what to do. I was drinking my juice and one came near the window and it almost made me drop my drink. I tell her about it, and she takes it as me exaggerating. Anyways, I can just simply see a wasp outside and it makes me feel like I'm about to fight for my life. I always take a break for it. Can you please explain why my phobia of bees and wasps is so huge?
@nikandevaspeakman
@nikandevaspeakman 3 жыл бұрын
All phobias appear to grow over the years. Imagine a phobia is like a muscle. The more times it is exercised, the bigger and more pronounced it becomes. Thus, the more phobic responses you have, the worse it feels. Also, every time you have a phobic response you can add more triggers, for example if you see a wasp in the park, after this the park becomes a trigger and so on with each event and hence why it feels it gets worse. The good news is you’re not born with it. It’s a learning from a scary event, or copied behaviour and always from childhood. All phobias can be overcome with therapy or the right help targeting the start. Also hope our film helps.

Glad the bee lady got over her fear that came from nothing but I lived it & you can't help me!!!! 🤷‍♂

I'm terrified of bees and wasps (and i the same vein, jellyfish). I can cope with bees as I can see them in a benign way. But I just can't do that with wasps, there's only negative connotation with them. How can we change our perception with wasps to go from a negative to a positive one?
@nikandevaspeakman
@nikandevaspeakman 3 жыл бұрын
You can change your perception of wasps positively by researching facts about them and the fact that they are imperative and a help to humanity and our planet. To get you started; only female wasps have stingers (so not all of them) and the purpose of the stinger is actually a modified egg laying organ. Wasps have been proven to have logic, they can use 2 pieces of information and draw a conclusion (so far they are the only invertebrate proven to be able to do this). They play a vital role in pollinating crops and flowers. They are the most proficient in managing pest populations and we’d be drowning (literally) in aphids if it were not for wasps. 1 wasp kills around 100 aphids a day & aphids are the fastest breeding creature on the planet and eat our crops & plants. In autumn ALL wasps die except the queen 😢 They mean no malice to humans at all, but are very protective of their young, queen and food so if we appear a threat they’re telling us to go away. Hope that helps to get you stared 💕 xxx

I have been scared of bees ever since I was 7, I was walking through a trail when I was camping, or we were in a forest, I honestly have no idea. But, there was a log and little me playing video games all the time, I wanted to seem cool in front of my best friend... So, I jumped on it... And, the log broke. A swarm of yellow jackets coming out of the log, because they had a very large nest in that log. Anyways, we quickly ran and we cut off the trail and had to jump in a gross moss pond, after that.. Whenever I’m about 20 feet away, I sweat and I start shaking, and at the age of 10, in about 4th grade, we had a bumblebee problem, a wasp problem, and a yellow jacket problem, and so there was a wasp or yellow jacket nest where I liked to hang out, and one time one chased me and my friends, after that I was crying, sweating and screaming "GET ME OUT OF HERE!” And banging on the gate of the playground, until a staff let me inside, and here’s another story... So, after French reading (I went to a French immersion) there was a fire drill, they had lots of bee problems at the elementary school I was going to, and I was with my friend, finally it was over, nothing really happened that scared me at the drill, but everyone was like "Oh hey ___ (I’m not going to name them) there’s a bee flying over you!” So I was honestly really scared.. I start sweating and running as fast as I can, until suddenly it flies over my head, I run and accidentally trip someone but I keep running, after I got inside I though all of it was over, until it got in the building... So, that’s how I got my HUGE phobia of every type of bee, I hate the sound, how they look, and there stings. Even though I haven’t got stung yet. Thank you for reading!
@nikandevaspeakman
@nikandevaspeakman 4 жыл бұрын
Please just consider how this started. You were terrified the yellow jackets would sting you and that's what created the phobia. if you put the event into context as an adult and not a 7 year old you can overcome this. Realise that you totally destroyed the yellow jackets happy home, no wonder they would be angry! Once you see the cause from a new perspective the symptoms change.

I'm aware that they are usually not aggressive unless provoked or if you wonder to close to the nest but the thing I get paranoid about is having one on me i don't know about climbing on me and then me accidentally triggering it which I've seen happen to two of my friends. Honestly don't know what my options are at this point. Just the buzzing sound sends me into panic mode now because I don't know where it is. im not afraid of bees/wasps normally, its just when they get into my room i absolutely panic, because i dont know how to get rid of them, and im in such a confined space so i feel so scared when it starts flying around

We usually wait till they land and then place a glass over them, and then gently slide a peace of paper or card under the glass before setting them free through a door or window. When they come indoors, they’re literally just looking for a way back out again.

man that test you doing there wouldnt work on me, strange thing is i cant stand been in the same room as an actual wasp however watching videos is interesting youd have to bring a real living wasp into the room for me to go batshit crazy! theres the real ones in the room but im watching a video after all so its ok.

Yes this is the same as me. While I don't enjoy watching videos or hearing wasps, it's their physical presence in my personal space that causes the phobic response. How can we get over that fear and flight response?

So I don’t like bees because they sting but I know we need them so I don’t freak as much with them. It’s wasps and hornets. They freak me out so bad, I won’t leave my house some days during summer. They are aggressive, and they get right in your face. They also can keep stinging so I’m absolutely terrified of them

Wasps and hornets have no concept of what a human is therefore have no ill will or malice to us.

See I’m not scared of bees but I’m terrified of wasps, I kill them where I see them. But bees I generally leave them alone because I think they’re cute and fuzzy.

Bees should have there own separate video, because nobody's scared of bees. It's wasps and hornets that people don't like

Bees don’t chase anything or anyone. They busily fly around, looking for food and hence they may fly towards brightly coloured things or anything that could be food just to check it out.
