Envy and jealousy sneakily gain control of our minds. They don’t feel like other sins that give at least a brief moment of gratification, so it’s easy to dismiss these disordered thoughts. In this video, Fr. Mike explains why we need to focus in on whatever jealousy or envy we may have in our lives, because it could inhibit our relationship with God. The remedy he shares is a reminder of who we are in God’s eyes, which is all that matters.
Fr. Mike is also a presenter in these faith formation programs from Ascension:

Chosen: This is Your Catholic Faith (bit.ly/2nCKKLK)
Altaration: The Mystery of the Mass Revealed (bit.ly/2vG9KX2)

I'm in a situation right now where I get so annoyed with what my friends have not realizing I've already started to envy them. I am so sad that they have this life that I don't have. So angry that I was born in a poor family. My heart feels so heavy with sadness and anger. I feel so bad right now because they are my friends. I should be happy of what they have. Listening to this story again reminds me to always be grateful of what I have. My heart is so heavy but I feel like there's an elephant's foot taken out of my chest. I'm glad I watched this video. God really has so many amazing ways giving us answers to our questions ❤️

Amen! Praise God He has given an awareness to you and you can confess and renounce and be restored in the Sacrament of confession. Everyone has problems. Some people keep their problems very well hidden, but they are there. I'm older, so I've witnessed the downfall of couples and families who at one time appeared to have it all. I know people who have beautiful homes and lots of money, yet they have addictions, troubled children, legal battles, or are victims of adultery or ongoing abuse. I have very little material possessions due to the cards life has dealt me, yet I count my blessings for God's grace and where I stand today.

You're the one with the issues. They do not have to change or apologise for succeeding in life. You need to look in the mirror and ask yourself why you are comparing to them rather than working on yourself. Laziness is the answer. You're lazy and don't want to put in the work that they are putting in.

Up until yesterday I believed I had no one. Never married, no kids, little family I had I fled as soon as I was able to escape the abuse. Can't trust anyone so no friends either (have them for a bit, depression/anxiety kick in & lose touch.) God is always here for us though. We are never alone, he is by our side and takes pity on the "widows & orphans" of this cruel world (the whole of it under the sway of the evil one, remember.) Even when I ignorantly turned my face from Him, He never turned away from me. God loves us, and I pray you find peace on this earth.

I've never heard envy described as a "sadness", but it's so true. I'm sad that I'm not good at anything and I'm not who I want to be, but it leads me to intense, anger-inducing envy. I feel slighted, and like you said "blinded to my own blessings". I don't wanna see them, because then I won't have an excuse to covet so much. It's such a terrible sin, but it feels so hard to overcome when you're low and behind and can't succeed at anything. This really hit home.

I have noticed this thing in myself that everytime i'm so focused on the LORD and full of love for Him, every problem as such seems to dissapear. I suddenly have no hate, no despise, no envy, gluttony, pride, umcertainty, double-mindness, and everything else. And i now understand how so very true it is thay the very first step towards Christ is the death of ones self. If you're dead, you do not have such problems, for then Christ is in you and He is able to take full control over you, and He transforms you in love. So basically, loving Christ first is the solution to all problems. 😊

You shouldn't be Methodist. Christ founded only one Church and to not belong to it is to basically say that you don't care about about His plans, His design, His intent or His authority and that you want to do things your way. The false man-made Methodist "church" was created by John Wesley in 18th century England, whereas Catholicism was founded by Jesus Christ, tue God and true man, in 33 A. D. Jerusalem. Read Matthew 18:17 to find out what Christ says about those who refuse to listen to His Church.

@@lukebrasting5108 In AD 33? are you sure its not AD 325 after your council of Nicea agreement with the roman empire for which you chose to branch out from the true faith and embrace roman pagan worship for which you still practice to this day? 1 John 2 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us, for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us, but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. Matthew 18 vs 17 is referring to the Catholic so called church that has turned its back to the true church and went its own way.

Catholicism provided me with a great relief from much of my envy. When I was in a state of constantly seeking worldly pleasures, I found myself consistently envious of those who had more of what I wanted, whether that was money, sex, social popularity, etc. Now that I'm less concerned with these things, I pity those that have them, as they're often unhappy and out of touch with The Lord.

When Father Mike mentioned an attitude of scarcity, it hit the nail on the head. I have been working on this envy thing for years. It makes me feel horrible. I can do well for months and then out of the blue I see something and think, "Why can't I have that?" "What did they do to deserve that?" Then I punish myself for those thoughts. For example, I don't sleep around and there are these irresponsible and promiscuous women getting married even after having a child or worse children with different men. I have seen this played out in my close relationships. I feel miserable. I'm praying to God that if God doesn't see me deserving of having a family of my own to just please take back the life that he's given to me.

There is no pleasure that comes from the sin of envy or jealousy, but I do think there must be something we get from it. It is like “venting,” which I think is not holy but that, chemically and spiritually, we lack the self control to redirect a holy way. I think envy is shielded by pride and brokenness, immaturity and insecurity. It takes higher level thinking and spirituality to rise above the belief that we do not need to compare ourselves to another or receive validation by someone as being “enough” in order to be secure. I always appreciate being taught so that I can confess things I was unaware of (like the talk on vanity being an inordinate concern for what people think of me… never knew and very powerful to be able to confess and renounce.) Praying for all souls to come to the truth that sin is never something to be ashamed of and hide but to confess and renounce and be freed from its bondage. Praise God for the Sacrament of confession which restores us to fullness of grace and communion with God as He designed for us at our creation🙏 And 3 Hail Marys for Fr. Mike 🙏

Interesting point about envy being different from other sins, since it doesnt give any pleasure. As someone who envies a lot (sadly), I think the root of envy is actually “comparing one’s self with others” which does give us a good feeling of being better than another. That’s why it’s hard to stop comparing. As Mike says, if I will go to the Father and know I am deeply loved, I will have no need or desire to compare myself.

Father Mike i am a catholic from Indonesia in my early 20s, and i've been struggling a lot to seek inspiration in finding the truth about God's word. i am totally grateful to the fact that God has led me to find this channel. i have been watching your videos everyday for about 4 days now, and plan on continue to do so. you have truly helped me in learning to love more about catholic, and to commit myself into loving Jesus. Thank you father, i hope someday i can meet you in person .

I love the fact that the Patriots have a Bible study each week and pray before their games. I myself have even been hated in my own family for being a fan with furious words hurled at me in the past week when they won the SB. I try to be grateful and happy anyway.

Envy can manifest in many ways one of them is not seeing or give credit or trying to reduce credit from the people you envy, you put them down by comparing them to someone else or discredit them. So as someone mentioned here on this chat that praising the person and look into what made them succeed so you can imitate. But what if you are envious of someone because they are so confident and loved ? As fr. Mike said: place yourself in the gave of your creator.

Just looked this up the other day in the dictionary. Envy it seems is the wanting or coveting of what someone else has. Jealousy is the resentment that they have something you do not. So one can be jealous without envy. You can resent that someone has that something and not really want it.

I've been strongly with envy and jealousy since I was young, i always had friends that were better than me beauty and personality I'm always the shadow even my younger sister has more praises from my parents than me I'm always that dark star that no one seem to notice or care my presence don't shine, so I'm always envious of those that do shine, I'm always uncomfortable when people notice everyone except me like hellooo I'm here too you know..but idk my presence is nothing but I'm Glad God and jesus hasn't abandon me.

Fr. Mike, I’m aware about the sin of envy. Like today at work, I heard that one of my friends got a new job at a retail store. And when I heard that several people applauded him and congratulated him, I became a little bit envious. But then I realize that I shouldn’t be. Instead I should be happy for him. Am I going to do anything to sabotage my friendship with him? No. Instead I’m going to be happy for him and hope for the best in him. Because who knows, there maybe a future job opportunity knocking on my door.
