Had a very bad accident years ago... spinal injury that also affected my eyesight and hearing. I couldn't have gotten back on and ridden if my life had depended on it. 5 years later my back was healed, eyes and hearing good, and I wanted to be around horses again. I finally got the guts to go to a local riding instructor and told her what had happened and that I could hardly even pet a horse much less ride one.. .. but I wanted to overcome my fear. She was one smart lady and I'll always be grateful to her. She took a big 17 hand, half draft 20 year old horse that had beginning arthritis in most of its legs and told me this was my lesson horse. I had to ride it, only, for my lessons until I could make it canter once around the entire acre training ring without stopping and then I could start riding other lesson horses if I chose to. This gentle, huge, slow walking old dude could hardly be made to walk fast. Sometime in the 3rd-4th week I finally got the old guy to canter once around the ring without stopping. I hugged him goodbye and thanked him. By that time, I was SOOOO bored, but great at walking and slow trotting (grin), that I got that poor guy to do that one round of cantering.... finally realizing my fear had mostly dissipated. My instructor put me on a medium active horse next, and 2 weeks later was given the opportunity to ride one of her "fire breathers" who was like riding in a Maserati..... I did, handled that guy..... and realized I was totally cured and having the time of my life!!!! I never looked back after that and went on to do hunter/ jumper, dressage, cutting, trail riding. Also trained other people's horses under saddle. (I bought an untrained hot horse 'fire breather' of my own, trained him, and he ended up being my heart horse.) I understood, I needed to respect the strength and flight tendency of horses, yet to learn how to be around them properly by getting good basics, balance, and good training and learning horses themselves. Bless that smart lady, and that generous old guy (who she took back to the youngster riding ring for the new riding students to use .... grin). Always, always have been grateful. My life would have been so much less had I not been able to follow my heart and instincts.

It’s true’ you have to get back on the horse. It knocks your confidence.

The word you’re looking for is “traumatic” for that second fear. Yes, trauma can be very real from seemingly minor experiences, it’s a learning mechanic that kept our ancestors alive. Now it’s a nuisance 😅😂 You’re such a great teacher, helping her out!!

Ryan is the best! this is such an efficient and powerful way to directly deal with anxiety from bad experiences. It doesn’t take away the danger but it does help put you in a better place to deal with whatever happens.

I'll be using these strategies. Thank you. Sometimes my mare is really extra. She's sensitive and we've had some really shit experiences together. I've had spine surgery since getting her and she has a lot of body pain issues that we're working on. So it's been a long road of some very scary situations. She's finally coming around to be more predictable but I still don't trust her fully. The problem now is that the only way for her to earn my trust back is for me to allow her to do it and THAT is where my fear kicks in. So I'll be breathing and reminding myself that this is fun and I CAN DO IT. ❤️

Your horse will react to how you feel they can sense your tension so very important to try to relax or that will translate to them. Horses use smell to sense their surroundings so they can smell fear which is a pheromone that humans exhibit with fear…

I love the mantra. 26 years ago my first horse got startled, reared up, and landed on me. I was luckily not injured, but it took 20 years, 2 months of professional training, and countless lessons to get over most of it. What finally returned my confidence was 2 online courses in managing fear while riding. Wish every cent. Based on this short, I bet a clinic with this guy would have done it much faster and a whole lot cheaper!

Hey, I am a ( german) psychologist working with traumatised people and horses in therapy. You are doing an excellent Job and i really love your explanations!!! For lowering your heartrate via breathing, it is importend to breath out longer then you breath in and NOT to hold your breath.

Takes a second to lose your confidence and can take years to build confidence back. For sure it’s going to take time and NO ONE can afford to get hurt and that includes trainers as well. Ryan does a nice job and i enjoy watching his videos.

when I was 13, I bought a brood mare paint she was green broke long story short, I got kicked in the face while loading her in a trailer to go to a lesson . 3 days out of the ER, my dad maid me go pet and bathed her because he didn't want me to be afraid of horse's . 1 shattered jaw 3 titanium plates with screws lost 5 front teeth. I do not have any fear of horses or cows. I bought a pony for my daughter, and now we both work with the horse together. I still have some fears, but I take a break, relaxe collect my thoughts, and then move me. Being like this has helped a lot with all animals . pressure and release and body language means everything.

There's so much bs heroics tied into this, but the thing is, if it's stressing you too much, just don't do it. Horse riding is entertainment and if entertainment is not fun anymore than what's the point?
