I think because Hafu has the reputation of being smart & tactical (Pogchamps victory, Hearthstone champ, streaming strategy games for a living, etc) some viewers were expecting her to understand and follow Dr. K's thinking very quickly. I think many associate intelligence with quick understanding. But, we didn’t see quick understanding. We saw a great interrogation of the basics because Hafu was determined to figure it out herself instead of accepting everything as given. I really liked seeing both of them grapple with the topic (even if it felt slightly repetitive at times) because that helps facilitate “true understanding.”

And then I stopped and thought about why I was feeling frustrated, and I realised because I had an expectation of where this conversation SHOULD go. So I realised the frustration was a result of MY expectation and not of the conversation itself.That was a really cool realisation, I felt like I learned something about myself at that point. And from that point on I just enjoyed the rest of the conversation because I lessened my own expectation, and enjoyed the process and the outcome because I was genuinely curious about it and not expecting it to be a certain way

A summary of this in a somewhat coherent manner Initially, hafu had already dealt with some big insecurities she had on her own, like her appearance, and came to believe that now those insecurities were much more smaller that it could be just left to be. Then in doing so, she reached a mental block, where she couldn't figure out how to solve these other problems, like getting hate from chat and feeling terrible about it, and not being able to do anything about it. Actually, these are also insecurities, but she couldn't identify them to be insecurities and instead, came to believe that these were out of her control, and were external things. She couldn't control people to be nicer to her, and therefore it's something to be fixed in the world. She didn't realise that the real problem was that she had a small portion in her who felt that way too, and that was the real reason why those words hurt her, and couldn't make the distinction that detachment is different from apathy. The way she dealt with this was using the defense mechanism of having thoughts counter those negative thoughts about herself and this was a temporary fix. Dr K in the end explained to her that the way she fixes this problem is the same way she fixed the problem of her insecurity about her looks. For this, he first convinced her that this also was from an insecurity, not something external. Since Hafu is a very rigid person, and learned to not ever trust anything which other people say blindly (she had to because if she did listen to what other people told, she'd have stopped streaming because "she didn't deserve any of her achievements" according to lots of people), for any convincing to be done, Dr K had to word whatever he told carefully, but he messed up a couple of times, so it kept going on and on. But in the end, it clicked for Hafu and she realised that she was paying too much attention to the wording and thats why she missed the point he was trying to make..

Thanks for this. I had the same feeling about this but didn't know how to put it into words. This analysis sums it up pretty well. She's too focused on the wording and trying to understand the exact meaning of what Dr. K is trying to say rather than the overall concept he's trying to get at. Hafu is focusing on being defensive rather than listening and trying to understand the core of what Dr. K is getting at.
@Vescilla3 жыл бұрын
I know a lot of people will find hafu's responses frustrating but I think it's better to say that you don't understand and answer honestly instead of saying "I agree" to not be confrontational. I think she might have been a bit defensive because she wasn't prepared to be vulnerable during the conversation so she didn't want to open up too much and break that wall she had to put up to actually survive on twitch after so much harassment and negativity. I hope she'll talk to Dr K again, I can see she has deeper issues with the topic than she wants to admit based on her responses, because I don't want to believe she was being defensive just for the sake of denying the points.
@Ohnonono1233 жыл бұрын

@@Ohnonono123 Isn't this supposed to basically be a therapy session for the streamer he's talking to? People have their own styles in how they respond to therapy. If hers is liking debate and the debate helps her see his point then that is the point of them conversing. Therapy isn't supposed to work at a super fast pace. Also the reason why she may not be self-reflective as you say is because she has already refleced on many of her issues by herself as its said in the video. The issues the Dr is trying to bring out from her are obviously deeper scars that she doesn't want to expose thus the resistance and debate. The doctor even says the deeper issues she has left aren't things that she has to fix if she's perfectly fine and happy on a daily basis.

It's really sad how a lot of people's main concern is with the entertainment value here. Complaining that she's "not self-reflective", "treating it like a debate", "asking too many questions". This isn't reality TV. Sure, it's not exactly a therapy session, and it's more on the edge of a Podcast. But just for comparison: You're being exactly like the kids in a classroom who get mad at other kids for asking questions. In fact, it's more like you're sitting next to someone during a personal tutor-session, and you're on the side lines saying things like "Oh my god how do you not get it yet?" and "Stop asking why, and just accept it". While it might not be an actual therapy session, it's still a space that a lot of people come for self-improvement. You're making it harder for everyone, including yourself, by treating it this way. If Hafu disagreed with everything Dr. K had said, and just nodded through the whole thing, she'd walk away with nothing. You'd walk away with nothing. Dr K would walk away with nothing, and it'd be 120 minutes of nothing being achieved. Naturally, feeling frustrated about it might be the first thing to cross your mind depending on who you are. And I'm not saying that you should bash yourself for feeling that. But you shouldn't be unleashing that frustration into hurtful comments.

Hafu's very intelligent and appears to be the type of person who thinks three steps ahead of everyone else, hence her proficiency in strategy based games like Hearthstone. This means that she overthinks everything, which leads to her overcomplicating simple problems. To quote the meme, she's playing checkers like it's 4D chess. She internalizes her problems (common with people who are introverts or have a lot of self-hatred) while also being in denial of them, causing cognitive dissonance. Her denial seems like her way of putting up an emotional/mental barrier to protect herself, which may explain why she deflected Dr. K's statements so many times. They came to a better understanding towards the end of the stream though, so maybe this can be a step forward for her to recognize and overcome her insecurities.

The way i went about these "hurtful" comments was by laying it out in front of me with other examples. hurtful vs "just a comment". If something was hurting me, then it must be a lie. But if "a lie" was the reason for me to hurt, then EVERY lie would have to hurt. So what makes one lie different then the other. And this took me a while to "see". This was also the biggest eye-opener for me. It was not about who said it or what was said, but how *i* felt/thought about it. I may be a 100% certified nice guy, but if there's a part of me that *believes* i'm an ass, then the comments that affirm what i believe, will hurt. Nothing that hurts me if the fault of outsiders, it's my own doing. I choose to allow it. It's just not a simple choice to make, as you first need to acknowledge it's you, then figure out what/where it is, acknowledge and understand it and then you can get to accepting/dealing with it.

(33:33), doc was talking about, can you as a person, and hafu might've thought he was talking about himself when he said yes. Like when hafu asked: ''are you insecure about nothing'' i think doctor K mightve thought: you as in, can people be insecure about nothing. thats why he reacted with, they they...

I remember her early days and the shit that was talked about her. She is an amazing gamer, smart person and charismatic af. But maybe her biggest accomplishment is being a big reason why the situation for female streamer/gamer has improved. Because boys tried to break her and reduced her. But she prevailed and opened up discussions that we should not do that because it is shitty. A lot of people realized that and changed. Sure, there are still a lot of people being shitty but today they face headwind from others in the peergroup which support the target. Hafu had not that support back then...

It was definitely a misunderstanding of the issue that drew out the conversation, with the plastic surgery example Hafu made the connection between "fine with appearance" and not needing to do anything to change it - inaction. That doesn't work well with "fine with sexism" or "fine with racism." Eventually, somehow, they get to the correct understanding where she's still allowed to ban people, she just doesn't have to suffer for it, and the "resistance" goes away. The example of going through chat history to make sure the ban is fair seems to also be the same misunderstanding. Checking to make sure someone is toxic and banning them from the chat isn't necessarily an emotional reaction, as Hafu brings up examples of the most neutral and harmless insults from someone still not something she wants to allow in the community. That person who's consistently being negative in the chat would be someone she doesn't want to hang out with, no matter her security. This conversation felt weird to me, I'm not sure why it was so difficult to figure out the holdup.

This was actually one of the most real sessions out there. This is the reality of a lot of people who are struggling out there and why things don't seem to get better no matter how much advice there is. What Hafu is doing here out loud is what most people do internally, they'd be listening and nodding in the moment and agreeing, but a few minutes or hours or days later you just start questioning everything again and find yourself without answers to these new questions or clapbacks or "evidence" that the advice was wrong.

I think the teachable moment is how it's okay to feel insecure. Understand what you're feeling and instead of avoiding or burying the negative feelings you feel, honestly explore it and try to understand why you feel that certain way. And once you understand why you feel the way you do, and this could be due to a variety of reasons, make an attempt to change your behaviours and how you react to it. One way is to "just don't feel that way", but there are other ways to deal with it, like inherently no longer finding a problem with people shitting on you. Or don't let it build up inside you and just talk to someone about it. You can easily shit on anonymous trolls on the internet the way they shit on you, and usually that's enough to not be affected by them. I think the goal is not to have pent up feelings, so you're less likely to feel overwhelmed all at once.

I can relate to Hafu. I always had to understand first before accepting. I think everyone really is like that. But, like Hafu, I built up a lot of understanding of the world around me and unless someone takes the time to help us understand, it will take A LOT of suffering to get through to the other side and receive the wisdom behind the lesson. It would seem like I’m rigid but the pushback is really a form of respect because we think we can learn from this person (i.e., Dr. K in this vid). But I can see the exasperation that Dr. K has. That’s probably the same exasperation I see in others when we get into conversations about things I don’t understand. I am proud that Hafu pushed back as much as she did, not feigning understanding when there isn’t yet. That was courageous and smart. I have to give credit to my psychologist for sticking with me the way Dr. K did here. If not for mentors and coaches like them, it would take forever and a lot of suffering to learn life lessons and that’s a painful experience that don’t need to happen if we can get the help from fellow humans.

sooo disappointed with the chat and some of the comments below regarding this conversation. i dont know how anyone can sit here and try to invalidate her emotions and try to say she's wrong or genuinely challenge what she is feeling. its the great part of these talks with all the different guests- they all have their own struggles and they approach these conversations so differently, so i dont know why people attacked her so hard here. i think we can learn a LOT from someone who "pushes back" because dr. k may not be "used" to this approach.

she logically believes she deserves her success. but there's some emotional trauma at the lowest point in her life where she didn't feel like she deserved it or was that good at games. negative comments about that trauma trigger her or can cause a breakdown, which is why she's constantly telling herself to ignore it and not feel that way. She needs to fully accept the trauma and her feelings around those moments in order to become happier than she is.

I come here to psychoanalyze my own thoughts, meanwhile people in the comments are here to "psychoanalyze" Hafu. It's kind of weird because while people are getting frustrated by Hafu expressing her resistance, they too are resisting the experience and what that means to them. (Does it bother you when people don't quickly respond in the way that you're hoping for? Why? Do they have to respond the same way as you? Is there another way to view the situation? Can you extend compassion for someone who is struggling, but can't see past the struggle?) I found it pretty helpful though and took a few notes of my own samskaras that came up.

Meditation is consciously focusing the mind. The point is that by focusing the mind consciously you get more control over it, you become more like a surfer on the ocean instead of someone drowning in the chaos of the sea. There is nothing good or bad about it, just like there is nothing good or bad about doing push-ups. What makes things good or bad in this universe is context. Only when you are trying to reach a specific goal, when you find yourself at a crossroads, going left or right might define the right and wrong choice.

I think an easier analogy for him to use to express his hypothesis is that Hafu's mental state is like a house. There is a sh*t show outside of her house that can get in. When Hafu tells herself not to feel bad, she perceives it as if she is preventing the negativity from getting into her house. Instead, negativity has already seeped in and she is coping by ignoring and minimizing the mess instead of processing it. It's like sweeping broken glass into the corner of the room instead of picking it up and throwing it out. Sure, you have minimized its effects. But you are going to get small and tolerable cuts every day from stray pieces. This isn't even considering the fact that you may be accumulating broken glass (i.e. internalising online negative affirmations) without a method of processing and letting go of any of it.
