I think that the drawbacks of perfectionism go far beyond excess distress. Chasing perfection is extremely costly in terms of both time and effort. In most things we do, we see quickly diminishing returns. We could double or triple our efforts for an extra 10% gain. In some cases, this is worth the cost, but in most cases, it isn't, and perfectionism tends to bleed into everything we do. For example, we might be able to vacuum the floors in 5 minutes, but wipe them by hand in 30 minutes. The vacuum is mostly as thorough for way less effort. It helps me to remember that "Perfect is the Enemy of Good," an aphorism commonly attributed to Voltaire. As a perfectionist myself, this is a useful way to frame things, as my perfectionism is born out of a desire to be better, whereas perfectionism can actually prevent me from being so on the whole.
