I'm with you, It is all too much! I am a frugal minimalist (grew up very poor) and I don't feel a need to buy what other's are selling 🤷. I would rather be responsible with my hard earned money. I don't do "trends" and I don't get the "collection" mindset. Makeup, skincare, hygiene items etc are, in my opinion, things to be purchased based on need and useage. Same with everything else, I don't want to "carry" things I don't use into my future life....

I’m having to look at my overconsumption this year and goodness it’s not fun lol. I’ve thought of going on a no buy but honestly that terrifies me. I tend to go overboard with books and little hobby things ( I’m quite introverted and tend to just hoard all the comforts in my house lol). Great video!! Maybe in 2025 I’ll try out a no buy so I can read all the books I’ve purchased.

Something that might seem less overwhelming than a no buy is starting a “don’t break the chain “ challenge. Every day you don’t spend is a link in the chain and you try to keep the chain going as long as possible. If you break the chain you just start it again the next day.

I'm a over consumer at heart and i'm working on that, trying to buy stuff that i will use up in a timely manner and i'm still trying to navigate this amount of products that i've been hoarding for this or that reason and/or time. Panning, even if it's only for non makeup items (i don't buy much of that anymore), helps a lot and i recommend it to everyone. Good video and would love a follow up with the steps you made to be a more conscious consumer and the difference in your before and after. Have a lovely day ❤

You're so right! I've started 'panning' things like notebooks and highlighters and it really helps to keep me from buying more stationery I don't need. That was another big area of overconsumption for me! 🙈 And thanks so the great video idea! I will definitely do that.

Great video. I used to overbuy bath products, lotions, shower gels, and the amount of stuff I had to throw away because it literally went rancid before I could use it was ridiculous. I have pretty much determined exactly what products I use daily/ weekly and I replace something when it gets too low in the bottle so I don’t completely run out. I will admit I have two winter coats, but I wear them depending on what the temperature is outside, and it goes down to -40 Celsius where I live, so what coat you wear can make a big difference when you’re waiting for a bus in February.

I love this video. I’ve been on this journey the last few years to really reduce my buying and also the desire to shop. Also, something I think about a lot is like…. When are we gunna see the men of the world join the anti consumerism movement? Of course some do, but I want anti consumption channels for men and their sneaker collections, their car parts, their tshirts, their Amazon packages, whatever. I know I’m being VERY simplistic but it’s so interesting how anti consumerism movement is mainly led by women and nonbinary humans focusing on makeup and fashion, typically female led pursuits. You absolutely shouldn't feel ashamed. Falling into the trap of overconsumption is such a common experience and it's the kind of thing that creeps up on you over time. It's hard to change your mindset but start small and focus on your why. Maybe you could start a new savings account and every time you don't buy something unnecessary, you could put the money into the account. I have a love for stationery, I justify it from the fact that I don’t buy much but I have kept so much that it has built up from over the years, it is also the only thing I spend my money on so I was wondering would this be considered overconsumption even tho I have the money.(that’s what I’ve been asking myself 😭)
@AimeeRebecca19 күн бұрын
I don’t think there’s a hard right or wrong with this because we’re all different. Some people collect things and get a lot of value and happiness from their collections. If that’s you, rock on. On the other hand, if you’re buying things to use but have more than you CAN use, maybe that’s a sign to use up what you have before buying more ☺️
@YarX015 күн бұрын
At least our stash of stationery, unlike makeup or skincare, won't expire, so there's that. If you think that you may have an issue, that is only for you to judge. I'd say that if you want to pause on buying, do it and enjoy what you already have. Having more money in the bank account can be also very rewarding 🙂

What disappoints me most about overconsuption are the people who acknowledge it, but think what they're doing doesn't count (when it totally does). There are so many creators that go on tirades about overconsuption, then a few weeks later do a shopping haul with stuff they most definitely don't need. Not even awareness can save us at this point.

I counted 116 cups in that one video, there may be 3 more which I wasn't sure were cups or not as they seem to be behind the rest. So... that's a choice in terms of spending money 🥲It defeats the purpose of having a resuable anything and helping the environment, but assuming the rent is paid, the food is on the table and they're happy, sure. If the necessities are not covered, then that's a problem.

I think the problem of overconsumption is there even if it isn’t a “problem” in your life in terms of money debt of whatever. The fact that you own that many reusable cups contradicts the main purpose of them as aimee said. Environmentally is disastrous and contributes to the consumerist society we live in

The "that girl" stanley video: why would you take a random sample of cleansing balm, idk what the rose thing is and a moisturizer?? Like where is she going so that she needs to have those with her?? I saw from other video that those lip balms won't stay on that piece of plastic really well so it's basically just useless, if it cannot secure the lipbalm well. I'm certain that most of these vids aren't even real, they are for the video only / ragebait. Also have you noticed that almost every single influencer who makes these kind of videos almost always get a new touchland sanitazer and spray it to show that it has a fine mist?? Apparently they aren't cheap either but it's starting to get annoying when these ppl only promote this random brand that I cant even get (not from the US), there's literally other options too that would be good and waste less space than those big ones. Also almost all of these influencers like the same stuff and colors (beige + probably just sponsored) so like I cannot tell anyone's content apart, but what I can say is that it's overcomsumption as it's finest!!

I also think you contradict yourself by saying 'we as collective decided that this is ok' while also saying 'we should not judge'. So, how to call it out without calling it out? Wiping personal responsibility for a sake of not hurting people that clearly have some personal issues or internal void isn't okay.
@AimeeRebecca15 күн бұрын
I think there’s a difference between acknowledging that something is wrong and judging people for it. Judgement often comes from a place of moral superiority and I don’t think that’s helpful. You can call out a behaviour without looking down on the person.

@@AimeeRebecca agree. but when you generally vent out that this isn't normal and you're not calling out the person while also preaching how thousands of people watching this exact hoarding video, then who are your thoughts addressed to exactly? @@Aristaifly It's about calling out something insidious that's become normalised. I can't possibly judge people based on a short video. I have no context for their lives or why they act this way. They might be the nicest, most well-meaning people who don't realise their consumption habits are problematic. When I used to overspend and over consume things, I never even considered the damage I could be doing to the environment. I never stopped to think about how all the tat I was buying was being produced. My intentions weren't bad. I just didn't realise the implications of my actions.
