In defense of the carrying bag, I crocheted a carrier for my stinking huge water bottle because it was easier to wear the bottle while playing at the park with my kid than it is to constantly put it down and hope I don’t forget it.

Yeah in Asian countries I think it's pretty common. Just a bag for u water bottle. Parents also buy it for their kids as carrying the bottle physically encourages them to drink more water

The fact that some people have literal legions of Stanley Cups and a nice house while some of my friends are *struggling* to make ends meet fills me with fury. It’s a damn water bottle.

I am a nurse and to carry around your Stanley at the hospital seems to be a fashion-requirement now - besides all the other bips and bops and cutesie little gadgets that tangle around your scrubs nowerdays. The Stanley is the last waterbottle I would take with me when I work in healthcare - the straw is just exposed to everything flying around, even when you use one of these caps. The caps make it even worse because you have to touch the straw with your hands to remove it and I KNOW BY FACT that you do not always have in mind to sanitize/wash your hands before you take a sip out of your cup. It is sooo unsanitary and the Stanley Nurses annoy me sooo much.

Hi Cara! Love your videos and agree that this should be a series. But I do think it can go deeper. Who is buying these? Is it just influencers or is the market huge? Who is amassing these big collections? (I feel like it’s just influencers who are incentivised to consume this way and non-influencers might get one or two accessories they like, which is not the worst form of overconsumption imo). Who is making and distributing these? What are their turnaround cycles for trends like these? What is driving the demand for these such that companies are coming up with so much variety? What happens to the stock of these items once the trend eventually dies? (In other words, I’m less interested in roasting these accessories but more interested in what their existence says about us in a more meta way). I know that this would involve more research but I wonder if there are people who watch your videos involved in this or similar supply chains who could shed some light on these questions.

On the note of Stanley cups seeking revenge, I've joked about the stainless steel cups becoming canonball fodder during a mad max scenario. There are so many extra water bottles and if we are at war for water, people will either be hoarding them to store water, or finding the excess ones to use as weapons.

I'll vouch for the idea of one or two straw toppers because if you're using a tumbler with a straw (and I have a couple) they do actually work to prevent spills.... provided you get strong, durable ones. A lot of the Amazon straw toppers that you see 15 brands with the same designs for are super cheap and don't seem to be useful for anything but decoration. Get one you can use again and again that's strong, if you have a cup like that. They've genuinely prevented a few spills for me. But that's it.

I don't have a Stanley (they're quite expensive here in my country), but I've had my fair share of water bottle collecting through the years. The thing is, when I buy a new one, the old one either gets relegated as water storage for long road trips or get passed on to a family member that doesn't have one. Right now I'm looking to get an Owala dupe manufactured locally to replace my chunky iced coffee tumbler with a straw. I'm gonna pass the old tumbler on to my bf's aunt since she loves drinking her tea throughout the day. Honestly I'd understand collecting multiples of a bottle if it's used by other members of the family. I mean you still get the pleasure of seeing it around the house and used, only that it isn't really you using it. 😅

I think honestly, bags as casual wear is OUT! and that’s why this is going viral and so many people are buying it’s a hydration pack/bag as a sub for a purse… this in my opinion is also why the leather MagSafe iPhone cases (although $150) are really popular too..I’m guilty of having one but I’ve had the same one for three years and have dropped my phone hundreds of times so it’s worth it. There is also the micro bag trend where stocking them up with minis is a huge thing too… I personally only have one purse, a daily minis bag for my car and one purse/backpack from a trip to London. I think the “next big” trend will be “blanks” (plain unbranded stuff) or things you bring that same Stanley accessory personal twist to. One that is coming here either 2025 or 2026 is the keyring accessories that people will start attaching to their pants for personalization… which is a good thing but when you mix personalization with overconsumption you get these weird viral hype landfill products.

@ not offended at all I used to work in luxury retail when I was younger through college (Nordstrom, Bloomingdales, David Yurman) so I have a keen eye for trends and what’s “coming up” … I left this industry even though I was very young - all jobs I got before I was 24… and switched to architecture and design from my business degree.. The industry as a whole basically figured out that people want to or can only spend smaller amounts of money on little things that will make their items feel bespoke…. And that’s the issue - people chasing after a feeling with materialism… this is more of a mental instability issue just like plastic surgery with women under the age of 40… something else is wrong but shopping/surgery to make yourself feel like an individual or unique is a really powerful thing and that’s what has these girls spending so much (in quantity) on landfill items…. Pretty rad you read the whole comment in full to try to understand… but alas if you have seen the devil wears Prada , even if you believe you aren’t influenced by this “fashion” way of life you are…. I think the level of what triggers one’s urge to buy something to show uniqueness is what needs to be controlled by the creators in this video… it’s misrepresented and untreated depression and insecurities that cause this type of shoppers mentality… also sidebar: I hate that the main culprit for this overconsumption has the same name as I do. I see these “personalized trying to be bespoke” Stanley accessories with her name all over them… I would love to have this be delved into at a deeper level psychologically to really talk about the whys behind sales, fashion, social expectations but I think that’s a bit too far into, but at the same time off topic. The point I think I’m trying to make here is that this trend is a symptom for mostly bad things… fashion/consumerism is just taking advantage of it at this time and we are all the victims. I think fashion should be more subjective to one’s own comfortably or personality and but forcing that feeling with overconsumption is not at all solving the issue… so yes to fashion being more about the consumer but no to the consumer being mentally where they are at (overall) which is causing them to be blind and just cover their true mental issues with things “gadgets and gizmos a plenty…” but Ariel, the princess little mermaid always wanted something more (experiences) the 2024 gen z / millennial girlies are Ariel’s at the beginning of the movie…as her collection/shopping/hoarding issues were stemmed from her lack of freedom and hunger for more life.. that analogy might be the best way to explain American consumerism

Yeah, the chapstick thing is dumb. I have a carry strap because I walk with a cane. With the glass straws it helps with my nausea. I have a straw cover to keep bugs out. I did buy a pretty name cover and I like it. The ice tray is awesome because my water is cold all night, even the next day. I don’t feel the need to get 19 of them, but might get a second if I see an especially pretty one.
