Thanks Henry. I've been trying to use your trick 1:10 projecting the image as a UV (bounds) but when I add loop cuts I don't see throw the image, so I can't see the loop cuts, and when I move the loop cuts they deform. It's not a UV unwrap, correct? So, how do you do it?
@HenryKellyGameArt6 жыл бұрын
hey bud, you can usually change your view to orthographic or maybe the opacity of the image needs to be lowered
@sebastiansanchez-penalemos90156 жыл бұрын
Thanks Henry, I though you were doing a UV unwrap on the mesh. So, you're just using the background, and do the mesh the same size of the background, correct. I made a video of what I though you were doing. To show it deformed the mesh: nearfy.com/loopCuts_deforms_the_UV.mov

Probably a noob question, but right in the begging after i project the plane from view and open the image in the uv editor, when i add a loop cut and try to move it it warps the texture...why
@TylerSerino8 жыл бұрын
Like, i can't move the loop cut down to the step like you do, it pulls the image with it
@HenryKellyGameArt8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, You have to Add a box in a new scene, Add a loop cut in edit mode, once you've done that step, Press T to bring your Tool ( Left Window ) Bar out, Down the bottom you'll see a tab Seperate, Under Factor where the Slider is there's a box that says 'Correct UVs', Make sure it's Ticked, THEN, Delete the box, Add a new box to the Scene and Press CTRL + U (That will save your Blend Scene WITH Correct UVs Enabled so you never have to correct UVs again, It will also work with Double Tapping G (it will move the vertices across an axes WITHOUT stretching the UV coordinates, Hope this helped.

You did this in the video when?
@FoundationsofPause8 жыл бұрын
Nice video. Think I heard you vaping. Question, what exactly are you doing to preserve your UVs while you continuing to model?
@HenryKellyGameArt8 жыл бұрын
you mean when I add loop cuts? or in general, depending on how I model, I usually create a second uv and bake from the first. this case they're overlapping uvs. if you mean when I add loop cuts and the uvs don't diform, when you add a loop cut. there's an option in the bottom right (press t) tick it and it will conform so you can keep the uvs straight, another way is double tap g to move a verticy across an edge
@HenryKellyGameArt8 жыл бұрын
are you in orthographic view ?? (5) and are you in a singular view? (front, back, side etc) also and for the picture on the plane, you need to UV project view the plane, and add the texture to the plane THEN, go into textured mode where you will see it.

Unfortunately this video do not teach any good practices. Topology is desired to be better, UVs is also not correct for gaming, edge split modifier is also not suitable for game models coz it split edges (its in a name, and create double verts) I know that this is an old video and I hope that you got better since 2016
@HenryKellyGameArt6 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you man! If i did this now I'd do it a thousand times different, this isn't actually modular, as i once thought, It's a means to have a modular Building set, but to make a kitbash set i'd have done it all VERY very different, the UV's don't tile from mesh to mesh and this building pieces are too specific, I will re-do this video at some point! but thanks for pointing that out! Also, about the edge split, I don't particularly use it anymore However, It does double vert count, but once it's imported into the engine, it usually splits edge via the engine anyway, just made sure the normals are fine

Stop using edge split... use autosmooth its better and doesnt make alot of doubles ! and your trim isnot even symmetrical lol
@HenryKellyGameArt6 жыл бұрын
Actually, autosmooth does still triple the polycount, anything with beveled edges does, it's how the engine reads it, But yeah I agree, I use autosmooth now and don't even touch edge split anymore, all it does is separate faces, pretty useless if you ask me, and yeah trim sucked like shit, i gotta re-do this video and make it better
@Dhieen6 жыл бұрын
Yeah i didnt knew for autosmooth haha, when i have it the number of verts doesnt seems to change! Anyway thanks for the tuto ! But how will you make materials? its in a later part?
@HenryKellyGameArt6 жыл бұрын
ah, they're all tiled textures, so just apply brick to all the brick area and make sure the uv's are setup for tiling and same for concrete etc, then you can just dress the building with assets and decals, I really should do an updated version of this now I work in the game industry lol, I have way more knowledge now!
@Dhieen6 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah the result is nice, but can be better without tiled texture i believe (but im not an expert) You should try the robo recall scene in unreal engine 4 and analyse the different modular buildings in it, and the texture Personnaly I really dont know how they ve made the textures and I'd love to know!
@HenryKellyGameArt6 жыл бұрын
Dhieen nearly all buildings use tiled textures for texel Density ratio, i.e, a 4m wall will use a 4k texture, and that will be 1k per 1m, or 1 texel per meter, so using a 4k texture on a 24 m high building would loose resolution, so most buildings use trim sheets and tiled textures, finish up with a secondary material vertex painted and also decals xD
