Thank you for doing this video! I've been trying to decide between HOB and drilled overflow boxes, but it's not easy to find videos about the HOB boxes. Seeing this helped me make up my mind. I didn't want to drill my established tank and risk glass getting into the water, but the self siphoning is what I was worried about. Now I know what I need to look for in a HOB overflow. I'm going to be adding a sump on my 40 breeder reef tank

Nice job ! Years ago in the 60’s we use to submerge the u tube and then cap both ends. The caps had sticks on the side so you could push them off once installed. In the 70’s we drilled the top of the u tube and installed an air line check valve. You then installed an air line which allowed you to daily remove any air bubbles if they occurred . Now they sell a lift pump but that’s overkill. Just keep the air hose submerged when under normal use should the check valve leak over time.

Thanks for sharing Joe. That is a great idea to cap it pre install.

I use these overflows on my 120 Gal Monster Red Severum tank. People always talk about the overflow U-tubes losing siphon and being a risk. I’ve had the tank running for 6 years and never had an issue. Like you said, with tempered glass, there is no option to drill. Maybe move the freshwater input to the other side of the tank if possible?
@inventoryking5 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s going to work well. The reason That I went this way was because I wanted to utilize my automatic water change system. When I need to do a major water change water will come out of the tap next to the overflow. But when it’s on the automatic water change system the lines are going to be on the other side of the tank so the freshwater will be coming in on the other side of the tank so I don’t have anything to worry about there

Did you try the overflow box? I also have the same issue with a tempered glass 125. Do u think it’s safe to run a sump? I’m thinking of using an aqua lifter pump! Share your experience if possible.

Eshopps HOB overflows aren't bad but I really like the CPR Aquatic HOB overflows better...their design ensures less chance of siphon loss IMO. Great vide as usual!

Question. Would that overflow work with a 60gallon cube tank?

It should work with any tank as long as your inlet is putting out less than it can handle

Hello Buddy ... I was checking on some ways to flow aquarium water into sump that I'm trying to introduce to my freshwater monster fish aquarium ... (300 gallon) and bumped into your videos ...I saw your other diy PVC overflow video as well .. question is (maybe silly one ) .. it really helps to clean water ? Because water will go to overflow from top level and how about dirt that is lying on the (bare) bottom of tank? It looks more like a skimmer than a filter ??
@inventoryking4 жыл бұрын
Hi. If you have the input water hose down in the tank the new water pushes from the bottom up. I haven't had any issues. You do have to vacuum the waste.

What return pump gph are you using to compensate for that 300 gph flow rate on that eshopps overflow
@rockfella272 жыл бұрын
My question exactly. The 300 g flow is a bottleneck for a big cichlid tank and most big tanks.

Eric you asked the wrong question. You should've asked her opinion on some really nice wide crown molding for the house. Real intention is to then hide the water and air lines behind it.

It's odd eschopps has the silly tube to "suck" on vs a air valve reducer...just seems silly to have people do that plus it's unsanitary over time.

But you fulfill what you extract direct with overflow.. Nice presentation but not sure this is optimal. Better, and maybe easier, would be pump on timer, e.g. 1h per night, put water out of the tank, then automatic top off from you water line. No dilution, better tank water quality for volume water changed... ;-)
@inventoryking3 жыл бұрын
Nice idea.

I would put the hob overflow on the opposite side because on that side it looks like all the fresh water is draining out of the overflow
@inventoryking5 жыл бұрын
Hey Andy, that’s there for major water changes. On the other side of the tank I am going to have my automatic water change line come in so that is going to be on the opposite side of the overflow which is about 90% of the water changes
