there is so much lore. Beginning from "Thanks Steve!" spoken by several different people (including Wendell!) to intels "you can literally see it!" vs AMDs "you can't see but you can feel it" (and generally: the hilarious keynote reports), and Going further, how it's impossible to play Rainbow 6 Siege below 600fps and Nvidias fable for Ties vs AMDs fable for the letter X, it all ends up in a disappointment build at the end of the year. I'd call it TechTube Extended Cinematic Hardware Universe - T-TECH-U

You can get by the 3.3v shuck issue he was talking about by covering the 3.3v pins with tape (kapton typ.) I do this with my drives.

Works great until you remove the drive, forget about the tape which falls off in the process, and then temporarily panic when you think your drive has died the next time you try to use it. 😁

@@4.0.4 Why is there something wrong? Taping the third pin just prevents it from making contact causing it not to respond. It's a simple workaround as opposed to snipping wires.

I'm using a shucked drive in my PC. My external Xbox One drive enclosure died. So I tore it apart and it was just the enclosure that was faulty, so the 2.5 inch HD is happily working in my PC. It was 2 terabytes of really slow space, but I offloaded random things like Visual Studio to it and it left my 2 terabyte SSD free for just games.

The LSI SAS 3801E can be had for under $15 on eBay. That's incredible for such a powerful and useful piece of tech. Yesterday's server hardware can and should be repurposed for home server use. I'm an advocate for repurposing older hardware of all kinds. Sometime you can get this enterprise level hardware for free from your local IT department.

Power, scalability and serviceability should be important considerations though. Ancient hardware may have been discarded because a new solution consumes less power, generates less heat, takes up less space. If a new i3 with an iGPU on an mITX board with a couple SATA drives is enough for your bedroom Plex, maybe go with that instead of a power-hungry fire-breathing rack of 2TB drives.

I believe the food reference to shucking is for oysters. If you've ever shucked 50lbs+ of oysters for an event, you'd have the motion, or technique down like shucking a dozen drives for a NAS.

I'm sitting here backing up my Freenas build on 1st gen mAtx Threadripper 1920x and 4x8TB shucked drives. Upgrading to a 5700g and 6x14TB add some space but also cut down on the power bill because my dreams of free time to mess with home lab stuff are on hold with 2 tiny babies.

Some years ago, maybe a decade or two, an IBM tech released an article on how the new IBM water cooled Mainframes were going start using the hot water from the processor to do such things as heat community swimming pools. It was quite detailed and had pictures and diagrams. It also had an April 1st release date. I was reminded of this at the end of this video. Perhaps this will give you an idea for your own video release 2 months from now....

I have my NetApp ds4346 loaded and with sas 6tb drives. And sas ssd for meta data and cache and logging. 2.5" Ssd sas is on the server. Running sas cables to my HP DL360p with 328gb ram. She's a beast of truenas.

11:00 Re; the shucking thing, thats only on WD drives and only some of them do it, bit of kapton tape on the 3.3v pin works around the issue. WD does it to dissuade users from shucking, Seagate doesnt have the issue.

I think I use that same "e-waste" external SAS controller for my LTO4 tape drive, which by the stardard of being old is itself e-waste. Coincidentally each tape holds the same amount of space (uncompressed that is) as the SAS SSD that my music is on, which also coincidentally is double the capacity of the micro SD card in my FLAC player which itself has one additional micro SD slot... Almost as though somebody planned it really well, but I did not, the archival was more or less an afterthought, and the SSD just happened to pop up on ebay for a good price, the micro SD was the next larger one at walmart when I filled my 256.
