Oh wow, so many memories. Yellow bread YES! I loved that stuff. 'Bite that orange' what a great quote. On many of my old overloading routes Zambia was more a transit country between Malawi and Zim' so we often pushed through it quickly. But on a couple of occasions we were able to chill out and take in some of its high lights. South Luangwa being one. At least the parts of it that were accessible given the rains. Thank you for taking us on your little adventure, I've loved it.

Hi Ryan, loved this first episode and I am looking forward to seeing episode 2. I am in the process of planning an epic journey myself and found a lot of common ground on the route you chose. great to have some referrals on places to stay. Our plans are to do a trip starting in the middle of October next year. We will start from Maun, run up the west side of the Okavango into Namibia and run along through the Caprivi crossing into Zambia at Katima Mulilo, then retracing your steps up to Liuwa. My main concern however is the distances you guys cover daily. Do you have any recommendations on places worth stopping over for an extra night , rather than pushing through for another 100 or 200 km? hope to hear back from you. ps. Keep up the great work. Ryan, what is the Botswana and Zambia views and laws regarding flying your drone? Great footage.

Hi Fanie, this is a lovely topic, and one I’m only too happy to discuss. Drone flying in Zambia is legal, without any form of payments for license. Your drone simply has to be insured, either locally or where you are from. An insurance letter must be travelled with from SA when crossing borders. However, you cannot fly in government airspace, national parks, airports etc. Botswana, well this is a different story. One has to purchase a drone license from the CAAB which I think costs P525 or thereabouts. They have to inspect the drone, for serial number and compliance. Took me 3 months to get my initial one. I bought mine a long while ago now and lasts for 1 year. Same rules and regulations as Zambia. Everywhere I fly I get permission slips signed, and have relevant paid drone license and insurance forms to back the drone. I don’t sell my drone footage and as such don’t need a commercial drone pilots license in these countries. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES do I fly my drone in National Parks, EVER. This is a distasteful breaking of the law by a handful of ignorant people. They are on KZbin currently and I simply cannot tolerate what they have done and are doing in any of these National Parks, ignorance is bliss I suppose. I have no problem seeing footage from outside of National parks, as these are deemed Areas for Flight. Flying in National Parks requires a commercials drone license, government signed acceptance to fly in the parks, and a filming permit to film in the National Parks. Some instances a guide needs to be present whilst drone flying in some National Parks.
