Maine is home away from home My mom grew up in Maine and we Spent every summer on the coast line in Down East which is the tippy top before Canada . The smell , oh the incredible rocks along the shore . The cold water of July swims that send you running for Towels ,my dad from North Carolina couldn't handle the snow of new england Returning south at the hint of of squall ,wait too long and its covering the 1st floor windows ! But we tried sledding and ice skating and snow tunnels they would arrest us for now a days . North Carolina rarely gets snow so we were in heaven . Thanks for the memory retrieval ,they needed dusting off .

During that season, the shops in Portland generally keep longer hours and are open more days. Safe travels, you guys!

@@OverlandingSophia getting the capitol wrong is an easy mistake. LOL With Portland being our largest city, it would seem that Portland should be the capitol. Hello! I’m enjoying following you along as you move from the Maritimes down into Maine. I commented to you before that you would LOVE Maine. My husband and I certainly do although it’s been quite awhile since we’ve been down there. You mentioned Portland as being the capital it’s actually Augusta. The southern coastline of Maine is gorgeous and even though the swim season is over the beaches are beautiful white sand and worth seeing. There’s lots of sight seeing to been done including whale sighting tours, sports fishing, bird and seal tours, coastline tours. You enjoy hiking the end of the Appalachian trail is at Mount Katadin. Like you said in your video hiking the Appalachian trail from Springer, Georgia through to Maine is on your bucket list. You could stand on the trail in Maine and imagine the feeling of completing the hike 😄. You are going to be blown away by the colours in New Hampshire and especially Vermont. In Vermont you can get on a ferry in Grand Isle and cross over into New York State, landing in Plattsburgh. It’s about a twenty minute crossing but saves a lot of drive time if your heading into New York State. I live in Muskoka, Canada and maybe one day you’ll come here. Wishing you safe travels and looking forward to your next video! Be safe, stay safe

@@OverlandingSophia your welcome back anytime. The secret to Maine is stop into towns when you gas up and search for hiking guides, campsites and things to do. Most guides cover the state, but some will cover the general area. I know some town halls have this sort of info. There are tons of walking trails as well. If you plan on being in the States for a while, look into the national park pass. It will cover many areas, but some places will still charge a fee to get in. Where you have a passport. You may enjoy the CAT. It runs from Bar Harbor to Nova Scotia, Canada. It may go to Portland, Me as well. This time of year they do train rides for foliage peeping. So many things to do. The guides may also be able to be found online. I just stumbled across your channel yesterday. I look forward to seeing more.

The leaves turn color because the amount of sunlight, not temperature. As winter approaches, the days are shorter which tells the trees to stop producing chlorophyll so the leaves die and fall off. No need of the leaves while the tree hibernates.

There we were with nicely laid out food showing lots of spare plate whilst on other tables, octenarians (I was told) had the Full Sunday Lunch with lots of meat, vegetables and gravy with no spare plate showing. The waitress explained (after tactfully mentioning we seem to have chosen a light meal) that it was the war years. 😂 Oh Ben, your comments need to come with a warning! Though, I would tend to agree with them after seeing the contents of 'that' display case! 😅 Loved seeing Scout enjoying his zoomies, so good to see him enjoying life, while River watches on... her serene highness 😂 Loved seeing Maine through both your eyes, and the magic fall foliage of New England 🍁 Have a fab week and see you next time! xx

That's not even the stuff he says off camera. 🙈 😆 Haha River will sit and watch him, figure out where he's going and then suddenly pounce on him and try and herd him! The fastest sheep she ever did see 😂 Hope all is good with you Kit? Sending much love and hugs from across the pond xx 💕

Your channel popped up for me back just after you landed in Nova Scotia, my home province, so I've been watching since. I am now in Ontario, Canada, and whenever we drive back to NS, we usually go through upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire (our favourite state) and Maine, and then cross back into New Brunswick. VT and NH have beautiful scenery, and if you can, I'd suggest you follow Route 302 across both states. Another option in New Hampshire, would be to take Hwy 112 (Kancamagus) from just south of Conway/North Conway to Lincoln/North Woodstock, and then I93 north from there. You just can't go wrong on any of those roads for beauty and scenery. I can't wait for next week's video to see where you have explored! Safe travels.
@OverlandingSophia2 жыл бұрын
Ah amazing, incredible you get to drive through these places regularly 😊 We've just done the Kancamagus and I93 (and more!). New Hampshire has been incredible, we just missed the peak foliage though! So difficult to time it right!

We live in Maine and last Summer we got a flat on the road into Gulf Hagas. We'll we were on the way out. And at Stephen Kings you were a 5 minute walk to my home. 😊 Camden is one of my favorite spots, and I love that it's literally the opposite of Bar Harbor. There's a beautiful spot called Mount Batty that's another breathtaking spot!

When in New England you must have the chowder and the lobster roll sandwich. I wasn’t sure if you guys eat fish but when in Rome as they say. The old salt restaurant 490 Lafayette Rd., Hampton, NH has the best chowder we’ve ever had. Thanks for an awesome video love seeing the colors changing it’s such a beautiful thing. 💜

Yes we do eat fish! Although only local, so being on the Atlantic coast we've been spoiled. Had a lobster roll when we were in Camden and it was divine! We may or may not be passing through Hampton, but bookmarked that restaurant. Thank you so much for the tip 🥰

Pinkham Notch NH- expensive but amazing to take the cog railroad to as far as they going this time of year or van if they are still running. Burke Vermont - Burke has bike(rentals) trails like no other place, beautiful ride above on rt 5 /5a, to lake willoughby, do a corn maze- kingdom corn maze and pumpkin patch might be fun. Just be aware things close early and plan on making your own meals. Restaurant’s in main towns like Burke and Lyndonville but get choices at the groceries stores to be sure when traveling in northern New Hampshire and Vermont.

Hi guys sorry for late post,went fishing early this morning. I am so pleased you were able to see Main in all of it's Majesty and glory.The drone shots were epic. Living in Colorado we laugh when Eastern folk say mountains . We call them foothills we have real mountains. For example if you google" World's largest flat top mountain" you will see the Grand Mesa in Colorado. That's where we went fishing this morning. Only an hour drive from our front door and it's only 11 thousand feet above sea level. My heart melts seeing River having so much fun in his new life. Bless you for saving him and making him part of your live and adventure. Glad to see your doing well. Peace, Keep the faith. Dean
@OverlandingSophia2 жыл бұрын
Haha true! Although, these are very much mountains, just a lot older than the ones you have in the west! Really hoping we make it out to Colorado, maybe we can join you for a fishing trip on the mesa 🥰 Scout melts our hearts every day, it was the best decision giving him a new life. Although, we say that he definitely adopted us, and not the other way around! 😆 🐶

Hi Ben & Chesca. Sorry we have not commented for a while. Trying to follow all our Vanlifers on limited EU data is so hard. Been home for a while binge watching to catch up. Love your Newfoundland and start of states journey, an area we have not yet been too. Only 17 States to get and they are so easy to tick off in the North East. Anyway setting off again soon for a big Balkans/Turkey trip with a Christmas Villa maybe where you stayed ..... very excited. Safe travels down through the states. P.S. Ben Walking sticks are so beneficial we used them in Norway this summer and our Portuguese Camino last year...Priceless on the knees. Safe Travels.

I'm all about mysteries! One of my favourite things to do is taking a myth(-ical creature) and thinking about how it came about. How and why did people thought about sharing the tale and why sometimes similar figures are depicted in totally different cultures and areas of the world. Super interesting episode! And yeah early autumn is honestly my favourite season. I love the changing leaves and catch myself often going on walks through forests this time of year. Until next week xx 💕

Yes!! Exactly! The museum was fascinating because he's curated these displays of 'evidence', folklore, modern day interpretations etc. From a purely anthropological viewpoint it's so interesting, but then he's also 100% a believer in all of these creatures so you really feel like you're in Mulder's office in the X Files. LOVED it. Sending love and we'll let you know first if we spot Bigfoot 😘 xx

Freeport Maine has some great outlet stores if you need any gear for cheap. Take a compass with you when you hike (+matches/water/flashlight) when the fall comes and the leaves fall it can get very easy to get lost in the woods as tails can get onbscured and watch the sunset times. It might be a little easier in the States but at this time in Ontario North of Toronto i.e.Hunstville the leaves are really starting to come down and they blanket everywhere. Oh and one more thing watch you speed when you drive through New Hampshire - they used to make a lot of revenue by handing out speeding tickets but that was years ago :)
@OverlandingSophia2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this John! We always carry 2 torches and compass with us, although that hike took us about an hour longer than we anticipated. Can see how the leaves would obscure the trail, they're getting very thick on the floor here too. And thanks for the tip about speeding, although we usually cruise along as efficiently as possible 😂
