This is one of the best solutions I have found for tacoma camping. The combination of spaciousness, weight and overall size and form factor is not an easy balance to get right. I think this camper has found a wonderful combination of all three. I currently have a Four Wheel Camper (finch) on my long bed tacoma and it has served me well. But I often wish I had the flatbed openness that allows for entry on the sides as opposed to the back. It changes the space dramatically from feeling like a tunnel to more of an actual room. I may consider looking into the technicalities behind doing something similar to this build in the future. Awesome work and thanks for the inspiration!

I’d love to see how you connected the shell to the fabric, particularly how you accounted for water intrusion. Also curious about any electrical work you did for interior lighting.

Thanks Daniel! I really appreciate that. So the top of the camper has 2x2 angle aluminum all the way around the lip. So water would have to come in at the lid of the camper and then travel up 2inchs to come in. But the on top of that, the fabric is attached to the outside of the lip so when water is on the fabric it runs down and off the outside of the camper as well. Make sense?

You can bring a camp chair or folding chair and set up the pop up and pull out the 3 1/4 in platform and use it as a desk to edit the videos too

I love your ideas, but I'm very big on safety and Visiblity to other drivers. So I would definitely take advantage of the top edge on the back of your creation. I would attach a Third Brake Light set up so you don't get rear ended. Side marker lights too. put them on a separate switch if stealth is needed at times. I think a rear bumper of solid steal would be in order so you can bouce off and drive away. You probably don't drive to much in urban areas for long to have to be around unsafe drivers.

Dude! This is soooo slick. I’ve been dreaming and planning a similar build for my 2010 Ford Ranger 4x4; little truck but tons of potential like these older Tacoma’s. I love that you’ve built on the chassis versus the traditional truck bed inlay. The quality and utility of the build is top notch. I’ve had two ‘08 3l v6 rangers, and I now have an 02 first gen Tacoma a buddy was going to scrap he abandoned at my place that had no clutch and a bad frame. A friend and I fixed it up better than new and it is a way better truck than a ranger. If you haven’t already started building on yours I recommend not investing in a ranger. Find a junky 1st gen to bring back. They’re way more fun to drive and are better constructed over all.

The only thing I would do is make windows with screens to keep mosquitoes away because I would feel claustrophobic with the windows closed even tho you have that awesome skylight. So the slide is a cover, or black out. The plexi glass is permanently attached and seals and doesn’t move or slide. Going on 1.5 years now leaks 🤘🏻

I just destroyed my nissan titan bed flat dragging a dodge out of the woods (trees suck 😅🙄), almost sold my titan because of lack of sleeping for more then 2 with the current roof top tent (but cant because of damage I'd loose so much money), which unfortunately meant leaving both dogs at home (which I hate having to choose between my better half and the pups). I'm extremely curious to see the more detailed build video and a cost breakdown!!! I really want to try doing a simpler version of this even having a queen would allow both the pups with! Why didn't you have the pop up open towards the front of the truck? If it opened from the front there would be plenty of foot room with whoever is sleeping with up top with their head towards the front. Just curious. I do like the slide out and the swinging storage. The driver side one would be a cool spot for an outdoor kitchen stove later on
