Overlord - Season 3 Changes & Cut Content: What Did The Anime Change? Metanarrative & Plot Holes

One of the things that Overlord the anime never really did well was expressing just how terrifying Ainz actually was, especially with his consistent aura of despair always being around, and his rage and freak-outs even more so. This is a consistent thing throughout all three seasons of Overlord, for example. When Albedo and the other floor guardians are angry that Mare suggested covering the walls of Nazarick with dirt, Ainz scolded her for speaking out of turn, even though it was really because he believed her to be overreacting. The light novel directly says she was frozen in FEAR, and the other guardians stiffened, thinking the scolding was directed at them as well. In season 3, Ainz scolds Lupusregina for failing to report back in the anime, and he simply states that she acted foolish for not reporting. In the light novel, he gets FURIOUS, not because she didn’t report, but because she had Nfirea and Enri fight for their lives, all because she wanted to be amused, since she was far more sadistic in the LN than in the anime. Lupus also told the villagers of certain things that made them lose confidence in Ainz rather than believing that Ainz wanted to test them. He gets so angry in fact, that the thing that forcibly calms his emotions won’t work on him, and it constantly gets overridden with Ainz’s anger. He quite literally turns Lupus, a sadistic werewolf who kills for amusement, and who is even more sadistic than Solution, into a groveling mess, making her beg for mercy, and is angry enough to scare the rest of the Guardians, since nobody except Albedo, when his Super tier magic failed to bring back Shalltear, has truly seen Ainz this openly enraged. The anime was very good, don’t get me wrong, but they could have done a bit better at portraying the moments when Ainz truly loses his cool and lets his rage loose, as well as the despair and fear everyone felt at his very presence and voice, that they didn’t include in the LN.

@@superstratton4818 Its good to be honest. Dunno, I just google Overlord VN, read peacefully. In the novel, when Cocytus failed capturing lizardmen village and ce back to report. Albedo shot icy stare at Cocytus for failing Ainz's order making the whole guardiand stunned. Cocytus became lost at words. Only Ainz gettin angry at Albedo for speaking out of turns made Albedo and the whole hall tremble.

Because Ainz was definitely pissed about the lack of reporting, thinking that if Lupus was incapable of the most basic and fundamental aspect of being a part of an organization then there may be no hope for her. She also never had Enri and Nfirea fight for their lives. Their life-threatening battle came after this meeting and Lupus saved them. And she definitely never said anything to make the villagers lose faith in Ainz. They straight up revered him, respecting him so much that they refused to even bother him with their petty problems (like possibly getting totally wiped out by an invading force of monsters). He was definitely more angry in the books, but I don’t know where you’re getting a lot of this from, unless it was maybe that way in the web novels.

It should be said that this undead emotional suppression is probably a good thing. Notice the power released when he became furious at the thieves, the members of Foresight. If he didn't have his emotions suppressed, imagine having a regular person thrust into the role of a demigod, with not enough of a morale compass, or self control to handle his power, and how he uses it. That rage scene was a good show of what might happen. Imagine that continuing. He might have gone straight to the emperor's country and destroyed everyone in a fit of rage, only to see the carnage later, and feel mind crushing remorse. Now, you have a depressed demigod. No good can come of this.

Please do the videos for all the seasons and maybe some other Overlord content as well. It's one of the best LN/Anime. Usually I prefer Chinese over Japanese novels because of their mostly darker/serious tone. Unfortunately these novels rarely get anime adaptations. :/ So thumbs up for more Overlord!!! :D

im not a big fan of your overlord content, you are basically milking content. In this video you keep repeating the same things for 16 minutes. All i got from this whole video was that anime and light novels re arrange time differently, and that humour in the novels depends on it (but failed to mention anime has its own sense of humour which works), you extended this sentence into 16 minutes. wtf. Further content milking is proven by having 3 seperate videos for only albedo, which could have easily fit into only one episode if not for paraphrasing same things over and over again. Not to mention your overlord world explanation videos which have the same formula as the other i mentioned. But i guess not one of your videos is even close in views to your overlord ones, so while i understand why the formula is as it is, it still makes me sad to see someone exploiting the name of a popular show i enjoy for cheap views

For me, a anime only, I didn't percive it this way. Demiurge stated that Carne Village was a experiment, but didn't elaborate about it any futher, so Lupus could not understand how Carne was important. It was the Ainz test, but if the village was destroyed it wouldn't be a big deal. When Ainz get the info about Carne village being attacked he summons Lupus and scorn her, but as he says he didn't explained the importance of the village. Than he states that the village it self isn't important but Nfirea is doing a important research for him, he would like to look him in Nazarick, but since he loves Enri, the village is the place where he would work better. Than Ainz explain that the lives of Nfirea, his grandmother and Enri are special, not the village itself. Once Ainz knew about the attack on Carne village if the anime followed the book it would have the misterious questions "why Ainz didn't help?", "why the troll didn't regenerate?", and than the next episode would show that Ainz ordered the attack himself and awnser the questions. BUT in the way the episode was made they sent another mensage right off the bat. Enri didn't seek for Ainz to defend the Carne, she tried to be autonomous and hire adventurers to defend the village. For me this was another test, Carne is under Ainz protection, but Carne itself is autonomous. He helped to build the defenses, but didn't sent soldiers to defend it (more than the goblins she gave to Enri before all that). Carne are thankfull to Ainz, but isn't under Ainz skirt crying for help when something happens. Thinking this way Ainz order the troll attack so they could defend with they own strenght and be proud of it, and ordered Lupus to protect Nfirea and Enri just if they need it. Carne being this autonomous Ainz can study how the village develops it self without this being by the protection of the name Ainz. The way I saw it was, If Ainz presence on the village is too much the village will think as a possesion of Ainz, so doing the minimum to help the village Carne has a debt with Ainz and will be ready to repay it in the time of need (it will never happen hahahaha). This way they have a respect relationship instead of a subirdinative relationship.

this attack even helped the realtionship between the villagers and the goblins. I think the villagers didnt even know any of the goblins name before that but after they fought together they starteted to mingle more. One goblins even lives together with a widow and helps her keep her farm. And the most important part this helped them get over the feeling of being helpless when they were attacked by the Sunlight troops. If you want people to grow you can not always save them like in most isekai you need to help them in helping themselfs. And Ainz killed most forces of the Giant of West if he didnt interfere the forces of him would have easily overwelmed Carne village. Instead of 6 trolls, 1 wartroll, snake of the east and enormous amount of ogers.

They ever touch this matter when they say they will protect their summoner and in the middle of the attack they say to take Enri even by force to protect her but change their minds and fight for the village.

I think you are underestimating what Ainz is trying to do. Even in the light novel, he seems to want Carne to be functional individually, without the need for Nazarick resources for defense, leaving Ainz open for offensive movements and to implement Demi's plans, which he is well aware of (even though only peripherally,) after the Kingdom Arc. Him sending the corpse of the Giant and the rest of the Naga's forces were simply to test how far along Carne's defenses were. And we can even see this, in the next part of the light novel(s) when it becomes one of the key staging areas for the forces of Nazarick. Sure, the anime ruins -some- of the comedy, but Lupis IS an idiot. She was designed to be overly sadistic, and her mindset reduces her usefulness, compared to people like Sebas and Cocytus. Hell, she is even more useless than Solution, who is just as sadistic. It seems that you over-estimate how much is "lost" in the translation from the anime, while underestimating just how much nuance is in the light novel and the way the light novels were made to be spring boards for even further out stories.

@@chvhndrtntlr3482 So, the whole test was to see if the village could think on its feet, and if it was capable of defending itself. Lupis was told to prioritize keeping alchemist boi and his girlfriend, and the little kid alive. As we see in the anime (and in the book,) she forces THEM to fight for their lives, for her own amusement. Because of things she said (only says a couple of them in the anime, but she says a bunch of horrid shit in the LN,) she shakes the confidence in Carne and how they view Ainz. Instead of them going "OH, this was Ainz properly testing us!" As was Ainz' plan, she goes off script, and just does her own thing. This royally pisses Ainz off, and in the LN, it starts a rift between the Neutral/Good maids and the super creepos, like bug girl, Solution, and Lupis. Hilariously enough THEY ALL hate Lupis, because when one of them fucks up, it is in their programming to think that they are all responsible. So she is ostracized for a VERY long time, until almost 2 full arcs, when she regains her place, after actually saving the trio.

As someone that is somewhat of a completionist, anime can be sometimes a frustrating hobby simply because in some cases is extremely difficult to know, read or watch even just the most important parts of some works due the cheer size of them across multiple kind of media, some of them are franchises that have been around for decades contantly creating new material (like Gundam), some others are extremely difficult to get outside Japan even recurring to fan proyects, etc. Overlord is pretty tame in comparison to other works but even getting all the important stuff can be quite time-consuming; so I want to thank you for this video, it is both useful and interesting plus it gives a pretty tasty bone to people like me, who have the interest to know things in their enterity but lack the time do it .

I feel like the reason Lupus wants to see the village destroyed because that is the home of the people she is meant to protect, if the village is gone then they will have to move to Nazarick. Pretty sure Lupus hates the idea of being out in that village constantly looking after those 3 pathetic humans, while the other maids get to stay at Nazarick or even assist Ainz. Bet she feels like she is out in the boonies babysitting, wasting her skills/talents on guard duty.

The way which you described the light novels reminds me of the show Durarara! Tons of characters and overarching storylines with episodes focusing on one groups perspective and then the next episode on a completely different set of characters. It was confusing at times but everything always ended up coming together and it was exciting to watch IMO

I feel this could make the anime seem more like the tomb of naz is its own force of nature and Ains has to steer it but cant really directly control it to avoid putting himself in a bad situation. The issue of that psycho maid also kinda helps bring out more of the character's thought process and also shows how Ainz has to learn about mid level micromanagement for others in their roles of to the guild.

When I first saw the anime ( keep in mind that I have not read the novel), this was what I thought happen: the whole village attack is just a way to test how well they are able to protect themselves. I think it was also to test the new village leader and her leadership ~ since the main goal is world domination~ they need to see if the training that the villagers have been doing is working and if they can strategize accordinly to survive. I dont think it was out of the blue ~ I also thing that the reason she says " I hope the village is destroy" is due to her sadistic self. If the village is destroy it means that they need her to survive, that they will be hopeless witouth her. As long as she protects the main two people is fine, she just needs to overlook and see that the village does not become completely destroy with the test that was given ~ but all of this is just my opinion~

Chrpollo Time: Honestly, Demiurge seems to be planning that way from the moment he convinces Ainz to go through with the Nazerick security test. Heck, he had some kind of manipulative design for the Empire before Ainz blunders into accomplishing that goal by sheer luck. Can’t wait for that scene and Demiurge’s reaction. It gave such an accurate picture of just how high a pedestal Demiurge places Ainz.

Disclaimer: This is gonna be long..like suuuper looong. The Siege on Carne Village arc could’ve been the most fcked up and emotional arc in the anime, so far. Since I am not a LN Reader, I had to analyse the story with only the events and hints seen in the anime. With only Lupusregina’s sadistic attitude towards Carne Village and Ains’ orders to protect Niphirea and Enri, AND also the scenes where they tortured the members of 8 Fingers last season (which showed what The members of the Tomb of Nazarick were capable of), I had speculated that only Niphirea and Enri would only be the ones saved and everybody else would die (even imouto-chan). Yes, from the time Ains invited them to the Tomb of Nazarick, Imouto-chan’s happiness would be her last. I couldn’t believe that inviting them with no such reason except a whim be the only reason. I made up 3 possible ways that this could’ve gone by: 1. Enri comes and tries to save her little sister but fails, breaking her will and spirit (driving her to insanity). Niphirea tries to save Enri but fails to do so. The now helpless Niphirea falls to the ground on his knees crying and looking down to his beloved’s corpse falls to despair. Before the monster kills Niphirea Lupusregina swoops down to slay the monster and saves, the only survivor Niphirea. After going to Nazarick, Niphirea is offered a deal from Ainz where he could resurrect Enri but would need to forever be locked up in Nazarick, never to come out ever again, only to make potions for Ainz. Niphirea immediately accepts the offer and cries tears of joy when he was reunited with Enri. (Wether you would like to imagine if the newly resurrected Enri would actually be the real one or just a reanimated corpse made by Ainz with the use of Enri’s body would be up to you). 2. Everybody dies in Carne Village except Enri and Niphirea. Now, the one resurrected is Enri’s little sister, Nemu. Ainz offers Niphirea the same conditions, as the previous one, in exchange for Nemu’s resurrection and Enri’s safety. Same thing happens, except Nemu would just be a reanimated corpse with no will but Enri is already fallen to despair. Wether this girl would really be Nemu or not, Enri refuses to accept the reality because if she did, she would go insane and lose her will to live. Niphirea, being locked up in a room, is forced to make potions and is kept awake and working through various drugs. Though Enri is kept alive, she is also locked up in a room, never to see Niphirea and she is shackled to both keep her from getting out and keep her from hurting or even killing herself. 3. Lupusregina fulfills her fulfills mission, Enri and Nemu never leave each other, Niphirea joins and they escape to Nazarick. Ainz gives them a home outside of Nazarick. Live is peaceful and they live like a happy family, but Niphirea continues to slave away and is always fatigued. Enri wants to stop Niphirea because this may be he may die from such a rough lifestyle but turns a blind eye because she is greatly indebted to Ainz Ooal Gown. @AniNews I didn't see that as a plot hole. Instead, I ASSUMED (making an ass out of myself) that he wanted it to get attacked to "test its metal" against "a true foe". THEN, later, (or earlier) I went on to think they were using the world domination part was actually not include the village directly, instead, it is to show themselves to the world and use the gold to lure people to "explore" this "new tome". Basically, I am probably giving Ains Oul Gown FAR more credit in his planning. This was made known when he arrived at the guild at the same time with the village girl and he asked the Guild master to find out what quest enri is putting up, the gold she gain after selling the herbs to buy what.

I'd say that the re-ordering creates a different issue as well. As this is after volume 8 the reader comes into it with the impressions of volume 7. Narratively, due to the strong shift in perspective in volume 7 we come out of it thinking that Ainz has lost all empathy and is now just an evil skeleton and should the events stay chronologically accurate we would be going into volume 9 holding that thought which would colour how we see his character in that volume. But by going back to volume 8, between his evil scheming against Carne which is something the reader has come to accept by now about Ainz, we also get scenes like his scene with Mare. In that scene he shows genuine affection and we are reminded that this is how he is when it comes to one of his own. So the image of the reader for Ainz's character is centered back from the shock of volume 7 into a more realistic place just in time for volume 9. It's not that he's a hateful lich now. He is still perfectly capable of positive emotions, he just has no consideration to spare to those outside his own circle. That fixes the false image of the guy who was forced into the body of an evil skeleton and is now forced to do evil, it gives him back his agency as a character. His body is affecting him but the things he does are ultimately his own decisions, it's not that he is destined to do what he does, he could be different, he could be doing things different, but this is what he chooses to do. Now though in the anime... well... that's a discussion for the end of the season I guess.

I love this, I hope you and Djinnfor make this into a regular series. I'd like to mention one thing though, I've only read the translation to the light novel, but in the scene after Ainz chastises Lupus Regina for not reporting everything that is happening in Carne Village, he clearly orders her to protect them at all costs, even to the extent of throwing her own life away in the process... if felt strange to me, that he would take her life so lightly when he was so angry about Entoma being potentially killed. Yet, even after an important order like that... Lupus still treats the carne village as her toy and even when the kingdom invades, she doesn't show up to defend them - even when they are all in different places and she wouldn't be able to protect both Enri and Nfirea from certain death... she only shows up to mop up the remaining forces after the goblin army has been summoned. Strange, isn't it?

As an anime-only audience, I think you have a misunderstanding in the Carne village arc. Fact is that Ainz ordered the ogres and trolls to attack the village and have Lupus save the village at the end as an exam for both the village and Lupus. I don't think there's a confusion there.

I think it's pretty obvious that Ainz did that. The Troll was already dead(unable to regenerate) because it's already killed by Ainz. The reason why Ainz does that is to test whether or not Lupus can get things done properly...

i guess it will never happened maruyama said that he got an idea in overlord that idea i said he can write 50 volume if he wants but he will end it all in 20 volume so we got 12 or 13 volume right now so the story is nearly done in the future nonetheless because he wants to write a different story but similar to overlord except its harem school theme so overlord is in 60% of its story before it will end in future so in the anime we hope that we will get season 4th and a final season to end overlord..

I love this new format. I'm one those guys who would read the light novel and watch the anime and it's always frustrating when the anime gets the main idea wrong or it feels like something isn't right, especially when you watch the anime first. Also I always assumed it as Ainz loves all of the NPC almost fatherly so he wishes to educate them and teach them to think for themselves and carne village is just a tool for that. Also part of me also feels that Ainz is uncertain about the NPC’s loyalty so he gives them things to do, to make them feel important. It’s easy to be disloyal when you are forgotten.

He also wanted them to earn a nice magic weapon. Earn it through the sweat of their own brow, not just have it given to them. Teach a man to fish, and all that. It was also a way to test their defenses under controlled circumstances and give them a taste of battle. More importantly, a battle that they won. Without going into too many details... this comes up later.

I don't know, I think this anime's greatest strength is how you relate to the main character, most importantly how you're learning the world and going through this adventure with him. If the mysteries and suspense is created because the anime is hiding information from the viewer from time-jumping around the actual events, I think that cheapens the point of the show. I like that I know what Ainz knows, when he knows it. It makes it relatable, fun, and it's more unpredictable.

This video was a little difficult to follow. When you say "episode blah blah blah. So blah blah blah." or used names of arcs instead of events that I could remember from the anime, it gets difficult to follow your train of thought. Not all of us will be readers if the light novels. Great Analysis loved, in particular, the Addams Family reference got a good giggle form that :) The biggest point in the Anime that was not clear, in the Arcs you discuss, was why the receptionist panics to get the info from Enri, all of a sudden, obviously, Enri has been there a while seeing as she has nodded off, in the novel we find out why, but it's not really made clear in the show. I mean all we see is a shot of Hamuske in the laneway as Enri leaves the Guild after Nabe gets the info on the Cart before she goes to the guild. Anyway please do more of these, found this one excellent :)

The anime makes Ainz way more competent than he actually is. Ainz just bluffs his way though stuff because he only catches the tail end of Demiurge's plots. Plus he's always so worried about appearances that he misses a lot of stuff, while in the anime he seems to be much more on the ball.

Nah, Ainz is actually pretty smart but since most of the time the novel is on ainz's perspective and he's constantly paranoid and he thinks lowly of himself--and that transfers to the readers.

Ainz is above average and very competent in some narrow interests. Certainly not the supreme genius his followers think he is. Certainly with his knowledge from an advanced society he could use it to make himself seem brilliant when required. However his narrow viewpoint causes him to have hilarious misunderstandings at certain points.

i think einz cares less about the village itself and mostly only cares about the potion maker, the girl he saved and the grandmother, he specifically points those out as targets to keep safe to his minion. The potions he could get are basically all he cares about. I think this is why when he is for sure going to die she interferes. I think she took the orders as "ill do surveilance and if things get clearly lethal ill jump in, but ill let mayhem spread because im a sadist"

Thank you so much for the extensive and insightful breakdown and comparison between the anime and the LN. I have not been fortunate enough to have read the light novels. I just ordered the entire collection from amazon and also preordered volumes 8 and 9. The lore of Overlord is absolutely awesome and I can’t wait for my collection to be delivered so I can dive deeper into it and have a better understanding. Regardless of the differences, I will always love the anime bc its gorgeous and fun to watch and the soundtrack is on point for me. I really wish there was some sort of inclusion about Rubedo, though I imagine that there is a reason as to why not.
