OVERNIGHT at an Abandoned Uranium Mine

I did my internship capstone project on the legacy of uranium mines on the navajo nation and the health affects on the miners were drastic, even the affects the uranium mines today still have environmental effects. Uranium waste pools do emit high radiation but can also release toxic chemicals slowly. The walkways were probably scraped and scrubbed a layer to remove heavy contaminated surface so it probably has very little leftover contamination. However Uranium emits alpha particles which cannot penetrate human skin but when ingested is where the damage is done. Radioactive nuclides can cling to dust too. If I were to visit a uranium site (which i do plan to), I'd wear a N95 mask the whole time! However that's because my grandfather was a uranium miner and suffered with many health affects and you both were simply visiting a sight, if no one swam or drank the water, you're okay! Lol

We are constantly being zapped with radioactivity. At the mine you would have had some more exposure but for sure if it was at dangerous levels it would be closed off.

Very good point, surely they wouldn’t allow people in if it was super dangerous

I’d keep away from that area, I knew a geologist who told me to keep away from a radioactive rock, especially with my camera.

@@wadeanddani travel with a Geiger counter, you’d be surprised, and yes, I have met such a traveler.
