For using an electric blanket, you should still have under blankets and over blankets to trap and keep the heat on you and not going up into the cab. It's not really meant to be standalone even in a heated house IMO ☺️ I suggest giving that a try, it should make a big difference in electricity use AND comfort! Enjoy your outings and love that you have a dog to share in the experiences now ❤ Wishing you both a warm and safe winter with lots of adventure! Thanks for sharing!

You need a covering blanket over the electric one to hold the heat in. You may need more truck bed insulation as well. Electric blankets are known to be very high electric users. Good to see your video!

Like others have recommended, gotta use a top blanket to trap the heat a bit better. Also might want to add a layer of Reflectix beneath your mattress. Will make a huge difference. Get yourself a nice 12v heated blanket. Power draw will be much lower. In conjunction with an unzipped sleeping bag, you'll likely be able to keep it on a really low setting. I was in 19F last night and kept mine on the lowest setting. Had to completely turn it off a couple times. So I'm confident you can make it work in your setup. Won't even need to change things up much. Maybe figure out a way to lay a piece of foam over some storage totes to use as a sleeping platform. Could use a rigid plastic sheeting material of some kind to level things out if the lids aren't conducive to sleeping. Or maybe just a piece of insulation foam you rough cut to size to fit on top of each tote lid. Cheap and easy and no one would see it. Would give you some floor space and all your stuff could be permanently stored.

You need a 12 volt heating blanket. It won't drain the power station so fast. Get the machine washable one. Always test your products before you get out in the wild. It will prevent a disaster.

Electric blanket is good to preheat your bedding and that is all given the energy draw. It should be underneath with blankets on top. Army surplus wool blankets are relatively inexpensive. If you don't like their feel add sheets and/or use a comforter. Personally, I don't sleep well in a sleeping bag, I toss and turn and like to have my feet free and possibly exposed. Make some velcro-attached window insulators. If you are unfamiliar with Stadium High School in Tacoma check out the "Old Brown Castle". Class of 75. Pleasant video and photography.

Great views for sure. I camped year-round extensively in the 70's and 80's and you hit on it. The truck bed is very cold and radiates it into the space. You have to get creative to insulate the floor and by all means find you a reliable heat source or your winter trips will not be comfortable. Kaya has really come along way.

@@JonathanYentch I've been eyeing the Maiden Peak shelter lately, because it has an interesting Octagon design and certainly one of the better overnight shelters. But the trek there from Gold Lake is pretty hardcore. Gold Lake Sno-Park is home of the ski patrol, so if you need to get rescued, there's that at least...

Very amusing! Kaya in the snow is a riot. Next step: when it snows back home, get her out in it, so she doesn't think it's just a mountain travel thing. I think you need a lot more insulation on the bed of the truck. Pile it on. You know better than me what will work. Good thing that electric blanket wasn't a sponsor! You might be right about it needing a cycle or two to work efficiently, though. I need one of those sausages. Have you thought about carrying a can of lard or vegetable shortening for cooking? Don't have to worry about oil freezing in a bottle. All in all, a fine little adventure!

I bought this same blanket and I made sure to test it at home.. I just plugged it in an let it run, while monitoring it I learned it draws way too much power. However, there is a 30$ USB powered "camping pad" on Amazon, it fits inside a sleeping bag i used it in 23 degrees and inside the sleeping bag was 80⁰ I had to turn it down low. I recommend it. It only runs 10w and lasts me 16 hours or so (2 days)

Heat rises. You’ll be warmer if you sleep with the electric blanket underneath you. I have an electric blanket that I put on top of my Hest. Then I have a wide sleeping bag on top of the heated blanket, but I keep it unzipped and butterflied open. I’ll wrap myself in it like a taco and then have a wool blanket on top of that. Wool helps to trap that rising heat. Recently camped in below freezing temps with that set up and was snug as a bug. 👌🏽

like some has says before... it work great if you combined it with regular blankets or sleeping bag, not as a solo unit. That way you heat your bed before getting, it's basic purpose in my opinion. second, you can by a 12V one, smaller, and it will use way less energy.

It must be nice to have a traveling companion. Kaya seemed to have more fun than you 😉 You were expecting a lot to use an electric blanket in temperatures at or below below freezing. Typical electric blankets use 100-150 watts. So that means your 800-watt power station would only last about 8 hours at full power. I expect your next trip will use a different heat source. Thanks for sharing.

I put electric blanket on the pad and sleep in the sleeping bag. Being heat rises, it keeps me warmer sleeping on it than it does covering with it. You still need sleeping bag with heated blankets. I use 12v heated blanket that way it doesn’t drain the power bank, but it’s still warm enough. It actually got too hot turning on the highest setting (it has 3) at 32 degrees.

Every electric resistance heater is 100% efficient, meaning that it converted all of the battery power into heat. So to get more heat you would need a bigger battery. I think a big problem was the electric blanket was on top and hot air rises, so a lot of the heat it made just floated away from you. If you were to put down a foam pad, then electric blanket, then lay on that with blankets on top of you it would have worked better I think. A sleeping person dissipates about 80W of power. If your blanket lasts 10h on a 800Wh battery pack, it creates about as much heat as a person. You should have felt a big difference with the blanket so that's why I'm thinking the heat was not contained efficiently. Yes I'm a thermal engineer.
