Overtaken by Derecho with Destructive Winds | July 15th, 2024

SKYDRAMA.NET | Another summer, another derecho in the Midwest. On July 15th, 2024 severe storms with destructive winds over 80 mph swept through Iowa and Illinois. I followed the storms from Geneseo in northwest Illinois back to my home in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois. Spent the night with no power fighting water in the basement. Am very tired. Great footage of the derecho, Andrew! I was looking 👀 at the clouds as you drove through-I’m sure that was the storm ⛈️-and I’m sorry you had to spend fighting the water 💦 in your basement! Good job, though! 😮😮😮😮😮

I heard you on the radio last night and was so thankful for your calm and factual reporting. Even tho I'm just over an hour west of you I SO appreciate your professional expertise. A BIG THANKS as always!! So then you all did determine it to actually be a derecho? We were more in the south/west end than dead center and while it was bad we probably didn't get the full brunt of it. I don't have any really big limbs down like from the one last year, and no loss of power. Take care and keep chasing the wind Andrew. 😊👍

Great footage of the derecho in Northwest IL. I was in a suburb in Chicago (about 25 miles south of Downtown Chicago) when it hit me All the local weather reporters were telling viewers to get in the basement ~30 mins before it hit as they took shelter themselves. Headed to the basement about 10 minutes beforehand and it sounded like a freight train coming. Power went out while I was taking shelter and stayed out until it finally came back on this afternoon. In the morning trees limbs were down everywhere it looked like we got hit by a weak tornado (EF-0 or EF-1) NWS never confirmed this but seemed like it to me. Scariest weather experience so far for me and don't want to go through something like that again honestly. Unfortunately seems like more powerful storms are becoming more common.

i grew up in the midwest in the 70s and 80s. i dont remember this kind of storm happening every year. and the area known as tornado alley has moved. anyone saying our climate is not changing at a rapid rate may not even have two brain cells to rub together.

Tornado ally isn’t moving. It’s a geographical area of higher tornado probability, not a climate tethered one.
