As a 56 yr old gay man who was beaten up by my father when I was 17 and came out, needing to leave home, live on the streets and needing corrective surgery on my broken nose and deviated septum, I understand why the kids do not necessarily need their parents to know what they are identifying as. Some kids need to be in a place where it is safe to simply exist without assault and injury before that can happen.

I haven't read Ms Ungar-Sargon's book, but her "Real Time" explanation of media was incomplete. She notes the change where journalists became the elite (and Maher adds they became the story.) The glaring omission, however, is how special interests convinced the government to deregulate media news. Outlets were once required to provide a certain amount of independent news coverage! Everything changed when this regulation was abolished. News went from public service to profit center. It is not overstating the situation to say that this deregulation was the proximate cause of biased media.

Just because something is uncommon does not mean that a person is mentally ill. Most people have no discrepancy between their body and their perception of their gender. But not all. It's understandable that many people see this scenario as a mental illness. But let's accept the premise of mental illness for transgender people or gay people, and see what the outcomes are. The next step would be to try and convince these individuals that they are sick and provide conversion therapy to address this illness. The results of these kinds of therapy is that these individuals are more likely to commit suicide. Of course it is important to clarify with a person what their feelings and experience is, and see if this is persistent or if it is transitory and fluctuates, but in many cases, we're talking about a persistent orientation. Insisting that the person is sick does not alter their perceptions and only contributes to shame and feeling like they are intrinsically defective. It also provides cover for people to discriminate or be violent with them. Common outcomes are depression, addiction, homelessness, and suicide. www.science.org/content/article/new-study-reveals-risks-transgender-conversion-therapy williamsinstitute.law.ucla.edu/press/lgb-suicide-ct-press-release/

This idea of parents having a say in what gets taught to their children is a disaster in waiting. If there are 25 kids in a class, they’re likely going to get dozens of opinions from parents about what should be taught and they’ll never get anything done and no one will be happy. If you want to control what is taught to your kids, then home school them and teach them whatever you want. But if you want your kids to socialize and if you want to take advantage of the schools for which you already paid by paying your taxes, leave the teachers alone and let the teachers and administrators decide what is taught. The teachers don’t come to your workplace to tell you how to do your job, don’t try to tell them how to do theirs.

There’s literally a twitter account called “Libs of tik tok” that has teachers every day putting out videos about how their sole goal in life is to groom and transform kids into becoming gender queer, fluid, bi, non binary, anti fascist , etc... it’s the craziest most horrifying thing you’ve ever seen. And secondly, Bill is right, it isn't isolated incidents. Critical Pedagogy is a common educational practice across North America, and it's growing by the day, except where it gets pushed back against. Parents are **NOT** being denied a say in what their kids are being taught in public schools--that's just a crap justification for this persecutional piece of legislation. That is why parent-teacher conferences exist : to give parents the opportunity to have a greater input and insight into how their children are being taught, as well as what they are being taught. As a former educator, I have *dozens* of stories pertaining to how I tried every whichaway to induce more parents to take a **greater** interest & involvement in what their children were learning in the classroom. I completely disagree with Ms. Sargon on that point of "justification". Teachers **want** parents to play a greater role in their child's education, and this bill--which persecutes a specific demographic for no other reason than political demonization points--does not in any way, shape or form increase parental involvement in the improvement of the classroom environment. It's meant to be a wedge issue--nothing more I had a standing invitation to every parent that I met on greet-and-meet night at the school where I worked : "If you ever want to see how I teach my students--just show up. No appointment or prior notification that you are coming is required. Just show up." I worked with elementary school kids for seventeen years, and in that entire time I had four parents--out of all of the students with whom I interacted--who actually just spontaneously showed up to watch me conduct my classes..

Your assumption that every teacher thinks and operates exactly like you did is absurd. Yes, the Florida bill is bogus and bigoted, but the idea that teachers welcome input from parents is ludicrous. I’ve sat in many teachers’ lounges and read many comments from current and former teachers on Facebook, and they are a nasty lot! Yes, parents disrespect teachers, but there’s much more contempt in the other direction. This makes sense, given that teachers don’t want parents concluding that they can teach their own children better than some grumpy, grade-obsessed teacher can. Teachers want to be seen as indispensable professionals without whom children could not possible learn anything, and this makes them a pretty natural enemy of parents.
@waynewright5023

@@meganbaker9116 I make no such assumptions, Ms. Baker, as I indicated from my first person singular perspective. I speak from **my** experiences interacting with elementary students, and **my** experiences interacting with colleagues and educators who have dealt with and faced this dilemma on a daily basis--what is safe to say around the students?? What questions can you answer, and which ones for you have to find a way to diplomatically deflect?? I get the point that you are trying to make, but just that assertion.."That just makes them the natural enemy to parents.."--teachers are **not** the "enemy of parents", but that is the kind of tribalistic mentality that this kind of legislation is trying to foment.. Teachers deal with this tightrope walk on a daily basis, and the idea that they would **willingly** place themselves in this precarious position by having sexually-oriented condos with second and third graders is absolutely absurd!!! No teacher--no matter how politically active--would rake the chance of bringing that brick house of culpability AND liability down on their own heads. Maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to learning, constructive and inclusive is already hard enough without putting oneself in a position to be reprimanded or sued because of possible inappropriate conversations with a minor. And, quick factoid : teachers were getting sued **before** this ridiculous law in Florida was ever dreamed up. Also, isn't it amazing how years & years & years of student-teacher interaction went by, but no one ever heard about the need for this kind of legislation until an election year when a conservative incumbent needed a manufactured wedge "issue" with which to divide the voters?? 🤔🤔 Republicans have been doing this for years and years, ever since the days of Reagan--why waste time trying to craft policy proposals on which to campaign?? Just manufacture a divisive, emotional wedge issue that will completely distract the voters from policy issues on campaign on the fiction of that "issue" instead..

@@meganbaker9116 I tried to respond to your comments earlier, but KZbin wouldn't allow it, so here we go again.. I do not know if you have any experience in the education profession, but parents are NOT "being denied a say in the curriculum of their children..", as this bogus bill tries--laughably--to assert. This is why teachers have several parent-teacher conferences every school calendar year, and any parent who wants to know what a specific educator is teaching in their class need only to make an appointment to get an eyeballs-on look at any curriculum material, Ms. Baker. I pointed this specifically because this bill that was just passed goes to great pains to assert that its purpose is to "Give parents a say in what is being taught to their children..", when their input has *never* been ignored, prohibited or refused.. Secondly, I don't rant--I go into great detail because I do not like my words to need to be 'interpreted'--anyone who takes the time to read my commented responses in their entirety knows exactly where I stand on a specific issue or topic. To some this may seem pedantic or unnecessary, but I prefer that there be no ambiguity attached to my comments. The Republicans received the focus of my attention because they--more than any other faction of the government, or segment of the population--have aggressively done more to undermine academic growth and forward-moving progress, and they deserve to be excoriated without mercy.. Third, what you actually meant was "You are clearly not a *skilled* writer" (which I am actually), as opposed to "You are clearly not a good writer"---"good" refers to flavor or taste, not to ability or skill. As for what other teachers do in their respective classrooms--ya" got me--I can't actually know how different teachers handle their classroom environments, but trust me when 6say that teachers are liability hypersensitive, and--once again--when they aren't diplomatically deflecting questions whose answers **they know** would get them in trouble, they are verrrrrrrrrrrrry carefully measuring their words.. In closing, let me relate that during my seventeen years involved with elementary school kids, I had a standing invitation that I extended to all parents at greet-and-meet night each year, and that invitation was "If you want to see how I conduct my classes, just show up. That was it.. Just show up.. No advance notice.. No appointment necessary.. In all of my years as an educator interacting with students, do you know how many parents actually decided to just spontaneously show up to view how I conducted my classes?? You could count them on one hand--four. In seventeen years of extending that invitation, only four parents actually bothered to show up. So this assertion by Republicans that parents are being denied access and input regarding the curriculum at their children's schools is complete rubbish that they concocted to anger and scare parents with a manufactured wedge issue that doesn't actually exist.. Nice chatting with you--it is most refreshing to encounter someone in the comments section who knows how to compose complete sentences sans the juvenile insults & snarky remarks--ciao..👋👋👋 Oh, P.S.--I shall endeavor to be more careful about composing clearer sentences--ciao for real this time..

@@waynewright5023 I don't think you're a good OR skilled writer, but go ahead and believe what you like. I'm sure you invited parents to have conferences with you and that there were "meet and greets" so that "any parent who wants to know what a specific educator is teaching in their class" could find out, but finding out what is being taught is not the same as having INPUT into what is taught. You have not explained in what ways you believe parents have such input, yet you claim repeatedly that they do. A skilled writer would have provided any evidence he had for this the first time he insisted that parents have a say in what is taught. A skilled writer would also know that "forward-moving progress" is redundant, but let's put that aside. I would suggest that it is not just Republicans who have negatively impacted our public schools but liberals too, and schools themselves. Certainly Republicans are no friends of public education, but the dumbing down of the system began in the 1960s in reaction to Sputnik, and has never let up despite ever-increasing staffs and budgets, to the point that we spend more money on public K-12 than all the countries of the world except one or two, while our results are worse than those of dozens of other countries. It's just not as simple as "Those evil Republicans have ruined the system!" That complaint is not only facile but ignorant of the history of American public education. I recommend the book "Insult to Intelligence: The Bureaucratic Invasion of Our Classrooms," by Frank Smith. It's a rarely seen but important history of how quality was eliminated from our schools much farther back than most liberals believe. Yes, the Florida bill is bigoted and unnecessary, but the endless whining by teachers and school boosters about the system being relentlessly under attack is starting to wear thin, even for liberal parents (see the school board recall in San Francisco and the governor's election results in Loudon County, Virginia). There is a great deal more wrong with our industrial public schools than Republican shenanigans, and the longer school people remain clueless about it the sooner humane alternatives are going to pop up in every corner of this country. That's a good thing in my book, but I'm sure you'd disagree.

I’m relatively sure that is a misunderstanding of Freud. Yes, we are informed by our sexual impulses (or more accurately, human desire to seek pleasure) from birth, but it it is not until the end of the “latent phase” that it becomes fully developed thought about sex (usually around middle school/start of high school). That said, Freud is less than proven (I would not go as far as to say “debunked”, but he was looking for useful models more than provable facts), and was mostly only focused on boys (specifically white boys from specific cultures), so how far his theories can be generalized is questionable.

It doesn't have to be an enormous issue to be bad; racial identity shit and teaching homosexuality to K thru 3rd grade is not acceptable and seems to be a replacement for religion in my opinion.

Educators do this job not for the high pay or the stocks. We don't know what a child's home situation is. We have to trust our schools and teachers instead of hindering them with black and white rules for a nuanced world.

BILL! YOU ARE A FAVE OF MINE. But yes! sometimes children need to be protected from parents or others. My professional experience in hospitals and then teaching: If a professional- doctor or educator sees emotional, physical, or mental problems in a child, it has to be documented and reported- with the well being of the child paramount, or the professional can be charged or sued.

Yes. Sometimes kids feel safer expressing themselves at school, where they're surrounded by other kids and adults who have at least some background in child psychology, than in the narrow confines of the home, where they may be punished for anything their parents focus on disapproving of.

So I read about a town of about 120,000 people in the midwest that recently opened a club house of sorts for gay teens to hang out after school. I guess they can go there and play darts or shoot pool, watch movies and such. Doesn't anybody else see the potential for trouble here? I'm assuming adults work there to run the place and pay the bills. In this day and age why would we do this? If there was a 30 year old man running a center for girls 13-17 primarily immigrants from SE Asia and Eastern Europe new to the country they would string him up. Actually the immigrant parents probably would be the first to complain because their families are mostly still in tact.

For the record, in 1970s USA, public schools would present sex education in 5th and 6th grade. A few 3rd grade females may menstrate. There are so many social issues that can be taught simply by saying be kind and respectful to others without going into too many details. This is what 0-3rd graders can grasp. Critical race theory is not generically discussed and understood. Until adults/parents and teachers reach some level of common understanding, it is dangerous to introduce such ambiguous concepts to children.

The point about the school protecting the student against the parents: yes, some parents are assholes and abusive and will disown their child for any little thing the child does that the parents don't like, so, in these cases, the child does need to be protected from the parent(s), and the only other entity in a child's life to do this is the school.

My issue with telling parents that a student is gay is the students know their parents better than the school does. If I know my parents are members of the Westboro Baptist Church, I don't want them to know that I identify as gay.
