Overview of the general organization of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
Cells differ in many respects, but all start out life with a plasma membrane, DNA, and cytoplasm.
The plasma membrane encloses the cell and allows metabolic events inside to proceed in an orderly way apart from events in the environment.
Signals and substances are moved across the plasma membrane in highly controlled ways.
DNA is the molecule of inheritance for all cells. In eukaryotic cells, DNA occupies a membrane-bound sac called the nucleus.
In prokaryotic cells, the DNA is not inside a special membrane. It lies in a region of the cytoplasm called the nucleoid.
Cytoplasm is everything between the plasma membrane and the region of DNA. Among other things, this semi-fluid matrix contains ribosomes, the structures on which proteins are assembled.
