Exosomes are extracellular vesicles that contain constituents (protein, DNA, and RNA) of the cells that secrete them. They are endosomal-derived vesicles that play an important role in cell-to-cell communication and are secreted in a variety of biological fluids, including serum, saliva, urine, ascites, and cerebrospinal fluid.
Exosomes are small (30150 nm in diameter) and have a distinct bilipid protein structure. Exosomes secreted by cells were originally thought to be cellular waste caused by cell damage or by-products of cell homeostasis, with no significant impact on neighboring cells.
Exosomes act as novel mode of intercellular communication that may play an important role in a variety of cellular processes, including immune response, signal transduction, and antigen presentation. Here’s everything you need to know about the definition of Exosomes.
Prof. Peter Holland, discusses in detail about the exosomes and their functions.
