Dont get me wrong, I can see why people get emotional during Honor and Glory, but for some reason I can get thru it without even getting misty eyed. Rise and Shine however, I'm crying in 3 separate parts...team death reveal, snowball sacrifice, and Winston speech. Rise and Shine is by far the most emotional out of all of them, for me at least. I do think Kat is going to cry in Honor and Glory, but I think this one will have hit her harder.

Can we just take a moment and thank Winston? If it hadn't been for his message, Mei would have undoubtedly died as well in her cryo-pod. But the base detected an OverWatch alert and revived her, the last surviving pod as the base gradually lost power over the years.

Mei was part of one of the Overwatch science stations. They missed a resupply, and everyone went into hibernation to conserve food & power. While they were asleep, Overwatch got into political trouble and was disbanded. Many were treated like criminals. So there was no one left to make sure the people at the various science stations were OK.

Mei and her team was cryo-freezed because there was a snow storm and they were low on food. 😊 Overwatch didn't help 'cause they lost contact with the base during the storm and belived it was lost.

A bit oversimplified. That snow storm was a freak weather phenomenon running for months. They were completely cut off from the world. And they set their wakeup-call to the reconnection of contact with Overwatch. Unfortunately, the downfall of Overwatch and the destruction of Overwatch HQ fell right into that time period. So, all Overwatch communication halted and the wake up call never came until Winston's recall. And it is quite likely that in all the chaos the information about the existance of that particular base, or its need was simply lost. Nobody helped because nobody knew there was someone out there needing help.

I love your reaction but there are few things you missed. No body came looking because no one knew they were there. It was an Overwatch facility in Antarctica. Most of Overwatch didn't know their location and the ones who did thought everyone had died in the storm. The team was running out of food and so they went into cryo. However, the power was failing and so the pods shut down one by one till only Mei was left. Then Winston's signal triggered the pods to open and the rest you know.

Mei-Ling Zhou. She's the most adorable, isn't she? Anyway she's a weather scientist, she and the team she was with were in Ecopoint: Antartica, one of Overwatch's research facilities. The storm she talks about at the start cut off communications with the outside world and had been going on for a long time, they couldn't get supply shipments sent to them. So the team leader decided to try out an experimental hibernation technique, one of the things their research had produced. But it was experimental and only 1 of the 6 team members survived the process, that being Mei. When Winston activated the Overwatch Recall function (as seen in his own short, Recall) it triggered the awakening subroutine for the hibernation pods. Ideally this would've happened when the next supply shipment came in, but that never happened because of Overwatch disbanding around the same time as the storm broke out. The storm also broke the antennae so data transfers were more difficult, hence they never got a wakeup call. Since Overwatch was the only group who knew they were out there, and their reputations were well and truly tarnished thanks to Gabriel Reyes and his Blackwatch team, nobody bothered bringing back the scientists around the globe and they were left to their own devices. This is likely what killed Mei's team. If she was more of a vengeful sort she'd take this out on whoever caused the fall of Overwatch, similar to what Soldier 76 is doing. But she's not, she's going around using the weather data she's collected to help with regional disaster prevention.

Just so you know: Mei is the actual devil in the Overwatch community. She comes and slowly freezes you in place, looks at your helpless self before she shoots an icicle through your head and walks away giggling to herself. She may seem cute and innocent but we all know she is a soulless monster.

When the energy was getting too low to sustain everything, the station prioritized only one of the pods, so at least one person could ask for help, she is the luckiest unlucky scientist ever! :( The Overwatch were the only ones that knew where they were, they never would immagine that the base where Mei was would malfunction, that was VERY unlucky!

Nobody looked for them because nobody knew they were there. The main Overwatch facility blew up, taking a huge chunk of their records with it, I imagine. Now imagine all the survivors were shit-canned. All the clerks were fired or retired. Someone with no authority assumed someone with authority would remind someone to go pick up the team in the Antarctic, who assumed that since nobody told them to do it, it had already been done. My dad worked for the US military. One day, they were installing new drywall, and they found a room that had been walled off. It was an abandoned armsroom, full of fifty-calibre machine guns, ammo, crates of grenades, rifles, even an entire rack of submachine guns, all with their records in a file...all forgotten since WWII. Nobody knew, because nobody who did had been told to do anything about it.

This and "Last Bastion" are definitely the most emotional shorts for me, even more than "Honor and Glory" despite most people preferring that one. I don't know if it's because as an engineer I identify more with with her, or the fact that so many things happened to her that she didn't even cause or deserve, it was just a chain of terribly bad luck. Also not everyone really got the emotional weight of Snowball's sacrifice, maybe because he's "just a robot". But the thing here is that after all her friends died, Snowball was literally the only thing she had left, and whom with she had an emotional connection. You know Wilson so you clearly understood

I'm all for Overwatch cinematics, but every time I watch this one, I have the same questions. Questions which have yet to be satisfactorily answered. Questions like: - How did she have enough internet connectivity to learn Overwatch was shut down, but not enough to send out her research, or - more importantly - an SOS? - Why - with the snowstorm approaching - didn't the crew of Ecopoint Antarctica, simply leave one person on... well, overwatch - reducing both resource consumption to one sixth, and chance of possible hardware errors, by... a lot, I suppose. - Why, would you put a tank full of flammable gas, on a communications tower? What purpose does it serve? And... - If solar power was enough to recharge Snowball - after he recharged some of the base's batteries with his power - why couldn't she just use solar power to recharge the base's batteries directly? I mean, I'm all for drama, but most of these plot points are just stupid.

Well, to lift the spirits a little after that ... the Yeti-slippers can actually be bought at the Blizzard Gear Store. Rise and Shine is definitly one of my favorites. Dragons is up there, too, because i love the theme and the design of Genji and Hanzo (when you make an archer in a video game, i am very likely to like that character, especially in a modern setting) and the newest one, Reunion is in my opinion just awesome, with lots of fun and action and old school western easter eggs and cliches, but in the end, my favorite will probably allways be Honor and Glory. It's emotional, action packed, takes place in my home country and features Reinhardt, one of my favorite OW-heroes. As for your questions ... now, i know a lot of people in the comments have probably answered that allready, but i'll add my own take, maybe i can add something new: a) Why were they left sleeping for 9 years and why did noone come look for them ? Okay, first thing, they weren't intentionally left sleeping (well, technically it was cryo-freeze, not normal sleeping, but anyways) for 9 years and certainly not as punishment for being seen as criminals. They should have been woken up sooner or later, most likely remotely via a signal from Overwatch HQ. And that's the problem - while Mei's team was sleeping, Overwatch got disbanded and every Overwatch activity whatsoever was deemed illegal. And yes, if Overwatch were just disbanded in an orderly manner, they would have probably woken up Mei's team in the process - however, the end of Overwatch was anything but orderly. Overwatch was- according to everything we know so far, basically, brought down from within - there was infighting, than the public became aware of the clandestine - and often times borderline illegal - activities of Blackwatch (Overwatch's covert ops division), the end of Overwatch might have even been caused by a global conspiracy ... well, long story short, Overwatch ended in chaos, their swiss HQ was blown up during a fight between former Strike Commander Jack Morrison (now known as Soldier: 76, the guy from the "Hero"-animation) and his former best friend and leader of Blackwatch, Gabriel Reyes (now known as Reaper, the cheery and not at all edgy looking figure with the black cloak and the skull mask) with both men presumed dead afterwards. Hence the signal to wake Mei's team up never came ... up until Winston's unauthorized recall. b) Concerning Winston - especially seeing as you like his voice, you should DEFINITLY watch "Are you with us ?" which was basically Overwatch's launch trailer. Rather short, very cool, incredibly epic - especially the score - and Winston's speech definitly has eye-watering tendencies, at least for me. It is also basically the video Mei receives and watches sitting atop the antenna. c) Yes, Mei is a bean. At least characterwise, i find her to be one of the most adorable, lovely, enthusiastic, endearing and cheerful characters in Overwatch (and that's saying a lot, considering how awesome the whole cast is). Her voicelines ingame are sweet and funny, she's very idealistic and optimistic, as also seen in the video she has a can-do-attitude, she's very. ... however, gameplay-wise, she is the devil in the form of a human. One more thing - when it comes to Overwatch, there are a lot ... and i mean a LOT of crackpot crazy fan theories. Like, a hell of a lot. Most of them i find to be plain stupid (like Mercy being supposedly evil), however, there is one i find kinda interesting - some people (including me, it was one of my first thoughts after watching this short) think that Mei might actually be partially to blame for what happened to her team - seeing as she left the sensors running for 9 years (she didn't know it would be that long, of course), she might have accidentally caused a power shortage that led to the malfunctioning of the other cryo chambers. Just a theory, of course, but it would definitly add a lot of tragedy to her backstory.
