I just experienced a paradigm shift. The idea that my To-do list can have boundaries has never occurred to me. Even though, on some level, I've already felt it. I am a full-time caregiver for my mother and I have ADHD. The past year has been a journey of learning to set and enforce boundaries; and more recently attempting to set up systems for every area of my life (routines literally never stick in my brain, but systems do work if I have them). I actually cringe about doing any kind of household task around my mother because she will begin adding more and more and more tasks - which leaves me feeling like the mountain of tasks is sliding down on top of me. After watching this, I will incorporate the red velvet rope to my todo list, and all of her requests will go on a list all their own to be tackled by me or another family member at some designated time. Subscribing. Thank you!

Also, I want to add, I was sure you were going to say "Take things like brushing teeth off your list," - but you didn't! I knew right then that you get me.

OMG this video is what I've been searching for!!! I have been looking for ways to increase productivity. Always feeling like I have too much to do, and also feeling like other people can get more done than me in less time. Finally realizing that I have flairs and crashes and those are things that need to be accommodated! I have probably been this way my whole life but realizing it today at 42. The message with not feeling safe to reduce the list did hit close to home. For a long time I felt unworthy of rest at all, let alone the amount I actually need (I've been working on that). I have been watching your videos twice- once then a second time to take notes! Thanks SO much for this.

As per usual, I actually work the opposite way from most people, including spoonies. For me, having an "overwhelming" to-do list is actually what works best. Due to a mix of being neurodivergent and having dissociative amnesia, I literally need my to-do App to be a second brain I have outside my body and that will have the responsibility of remembering absolutely everything I need to do on that day. I have everything there from occasional tasks (like a gaming day with friends), recurring tasks that I need to do (such as daily/weekly/monthly reports I need to do for work,or clean my bedroom once a month) daily tasks that are optional (listen to music, go for a walk, exercise, work on a hobby...) and daily tasks that I need to be reminded to do (wash my face, brush my hair, have breakfast/lunch/dinner, brush my teeth, make the bed...) simply because, before, I wasn't doing any of those things because I wasn't remembering to do them. And yes, I was legit not getting everyday mundane tasks done either because I wouldn't remember to do them or I wasn't sure if I had done it or not and would end up either not doing it anyways or doing it multiple times a day. The extra bonus for having a very random to-do list is the very satisfying small dopamine boost that I get every time I get to strike something off that list, even if it's something basic like "take 3 deep breaths". :) That being said, the App that I use (Tusk) also has an option to either assign a date to a to-do task (one-time only, daily, specific date, recurring, etc) to not assigning a date at all and, if you choose to do that instead, you have some extra control over that task. You can either have it visible on your to-do list as a reminder that you have this optional task that you might want to get done if you're in the mood for it, or you can have it not show up on your to-do list at all, thus making you have to go to a separate tab on the App to check all the tasks that don't have a specific due date, so that you're not overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you still have left to do.

I feel people end up with a huge to-do list because they haven't been doing the things they needed to do for years because of their chronic pain.
@CassieWinter3 жыл бұрын
Definitely agree. And I would argue that boundaries around your to-do list are even more important when you aren't able bodied or neurotypical. My boundaries are precious to me and they keep me sane.

@@CassieWinter it's a double-edged sword. People might need to give something up because they can't physically do it anymore. They might have to come to terms with themselves that they cannot go on a big vacation because they wouldn't be able to handle it. That is why the diagnoses can cause grief. But then the other side is some stuff really does need to get done. If you can't afford to pay someone else to do it, it will stay that way or you have to do it yourself even if it will cause a flare. I look like I am a hoarder because I don't have energy to clean. But it has to be cleaned because our heat pump went out. They have to come inside the house

For the record- I have pots too, among other issues- This video made me lol- "You know you're an adult when you get excited about a vacuum!" But on a serious note- thank you for this video... decision making is not the easiest thing for me lately as I am not able to keep up with my younger self and accomplish some of the things I think I 'should' be able to do. Why is decision making for some of us so difficult? Its all come down to triage for priorities! I appreciate your guidance.

I guess my exasperated main takeaway is, firstly, that I am working way too many jobs just to try and keep my head above water (because they cannot be prioritised and I am too exhausted to tackle anything truly VIP for me), and also that I must make peace with not being able to invite people over my place on a regular basis…

Of course you're overwhelmed. No amount of productivity tips are going to help with what is ultimately a systemic issue that's forcing you to work too many jobs. You're in a really tough situation and I see you. 🤗

As soon as you started talking about your struggle with vacuuming I immediately thought about commenting with how much my Dyson stick has changed the game for me. That and our “new” huge washer & dryer set has been the most exciting purchases for me in the last couple of years 😂

I really like what you had to say. My challenge is that I am the only breadwinner, the primary mechanic for all 5 of the cars in my household, and main caregiver to my spouse with chronic illness. And I have serious chronic pain and fibromyalgia too. Our grown kids that are still at home are wonderful and help however they can. It just seems like more keeps going wrong and breaking than I can keep up with.

Hey Cassie, thank you very much for your videos. Could you please share some of your Notion workflow? I know you do not want to do a tutorial on your task database because it's from Marie Poulin's course, but could you maybe just show us how you use your task management system in relation to your time blocking? I've watched your incredible masterclass and quite a few of your videos, and they have helped me tremendously, but I'm still feeling a bit overwhelmed with managing my tasks and would love to find a way that's not too complicated. I've been using Notion for a while and recently switched back to just to-do blocks but would like to find a simple way to use the database again. Thanks!! :-)

This is a great idea Léa! I'd be happy to do a video on this in the future. 😊That being said, due to my schedule it'll probably be a while before I get around to it. I'd be happy to show you my setup on Zoom sometime so you don't have to wait. You can schedule a time for me to show you using this link: app.acuityscheduling.com/schedule.php?owner=16161520&appointmentType=7959991
